Fanboys: Expected, acceptable and normal?

Good vs Evil. Right vs wrong. Us vs them. Human nature wants to divide the world into two sides and then be on the ‘right’ one, often without fully understanding the issues. This has been true for many of the world’s pastimes. Religion, sports, politics all utilize this primal instinct to great effect.

Gaming has been no exception to this from the very beginning.
When we spend time on an activity, it becomes part of us. It becomes part of our identity and hence how we define ourselves. At the point of inception, gaming, a relatively new pastime, would not have had the deep divides that plague it today. As a fledgling entertainment medium, the instinct would have been to separate itself from other more popular media. It would have given the birth of the “I’m a gamer” stamp, and we would have all been gamers together.

This was never fated to last long. Humans are social animals, and we do poorly on our own. However, according to some, "tribalism" exists because the human brain is not adapted to working with large populations. Beyond 150 persons, the human brain must resort to some combination of hierarchical schemes, stereotypes, and other simplified models in order to understand so many people.

The explosion of gaming and its increasing role in our daily lives would have led to firm divisions. No longer were we content to simply be a “gamer”. That had become too broad a definition, too vague an identity, too crowded. It was something our primitive brains could not reconcile. We became PC games, Console gamers, PS3/Wii/ DS/Xbox fanboys. We now propagate the same mindless fanaticism that has tainted many of the aforementioned pastimes.

When we attack a fellow gamer, the criticism is no longer received as logic. It is received as a threat, on a more primal level. The reactions become vicious and illogical, as it should be. An attack on self/identity is very similar to an attack on life. Logic is not the evolutionary response. Don’t expect it.

Sorry for changing title to anyone who approved this before.

I began to think it was less than ideal

It's interesting that it kind of follows the LEFT/RIGHT of politics. I'm in the United States, and a lot of people here like to assume that there are only two types of people, Liberals/Conservatives, as if it was as distinct as Male/Female. They leave no room for middle or moderate or mixed.

It's sad to see the video game fanboys doing the same thing.
Since the "Console War" is not specific to a country, it might be interesting to see how the fanboys are spread across the world.

If you could, comment on this post and state your country and console affiliation (with middle/moderate/mixed allowed)

Personally, I'm from USA, own all 3. I used to be a pure PS3 fan, but now it's about 50/50 ps3 and xbox. I have given up on the Wii.

EDIT: Excellent post, Pedrobear. :)

I'm Canadian, and from my own experience, 'console agnosticism' is more prevalent here. I have friends who own 360 and Wii. I own PS3 and Wii, and yet, when we talk about games - even exclusive titles - things never boil over into heated arguments. We care about gaming much, much more than the consoles the games are released on, and we appreciate great titles no matter what system they're on.

Of course, it could be an age thing, too. When you're an adult who has much more important matters to deal with in your non-gaming life, like career, family, and finances, console wars don't (or at least shouldn't) matter in the grand scheme of things.

It's hard to care enough to attack or defend corporations who rake in millions, or billions, of dollars annually by making entertainment products when you have bills to pay.

PirateThom5385d ago

It's odd, I can have very normal conversations about video games in the real world and, hell, even other websites and, I don't know what it is about this place, I feel the need to defend the PS3. I dunno, I think I'm more annoyed at the people who hate on the games more than anything and those sort of people (on both sides mind you) seem more prevelent here. I mean, I play a lot of games, mostly on PS3... but I still appreciate the best games on other systems, so I think it annoys me other people don't do the same.

The ability to hide behind an internet connection brings out the worst in people at times....can be entertaining though.

One of the things that makes N4G different is that the content is user generated, hence the "space" is essentially up for grabs. Its like fighting over food or any other available resource.

I also agree with aceofstaves. Age brings far more important problems than game console preference.

AceofStaves5385d ago

@Pedrobear: There are some fascinating socio-anthropological dynamics at play in the gaming subculture.

Watching 'console warriors' attack and defend can be entertaining, I agree. Especially when their loyalty blinds them to their own hypocrisy or leads them to make ridiculous, hyperbole-filled statements.

Na bro, us Canadians are just that much better.

Good read, and I agree completely of why we have fanboys. However, this is just a normal thing in this world, we all have different opinions and we defend them a bit too much sometimes. I see fanboys just as sports teams have fans. You also have to consider the fact that we are on the internet, and people act a bit more extreme with their preferences.

Janitor5385d ago (Edited 5385d ago )

It's normal to try to defend something you spent good money on, to an extent. But, defending these multi-billion dollar, global corporations (Sony, MS, Nintendo) is stupid.

Mkai285384d ago (Edited 5384d ago )

Isn't it though, defending these products as if it saved their lives. They are like vain preachers trying to spread the "fanboy word", that this is indeed the console to have and should invest in nothing else.

They are clouds without water, broken wings that will never fly, a barren apple tree that bare no fruit. With obsessions of consoles they become mute, that serve no real purpose. Confusion is all they know, they be so wrapped up in fanboyism they accuse a non fanboy of being one because he disagrees with a certain subject.

It's like religion, My God is mightier than yours.
Fanboyism has become a religion, and when one spouts nonsense, It would be best to avoid them, because anything you say meaningful they will not hear but will stay loyal to their brand.

Public Eye Creators Wolf Games Are Switching To AI-Generated Gaming

When Wolf Games unveiled its debut title Public Eye, the announcement felt less like a routine game launch and more like a signal flare for the future of

Inverno26m ago

The irony is that it's actually humans ruining everything.

ApexLanding234h ago

I will never purchase an AI generated game, I will not contribute to something that takes away artistic human expression and creation in gaming. I'm not one of those people who says, "I hope this fails" like so many often do about everything gaming these days but on this one I have to. AI has it's place, just not here.

That’s It, I’m Calling It, Xbox Is Dead, Time Of Death February 20

If you read Kotaku even semi-regularly, you already know that Xbox has been in a weird spot for some time now. And with today’s news that both Xbox boss Phil Spencer and President Sarah Bond are leaving and the new head of the brand will be a former Meta exec who previously lead Microsoft’s AI division, I think it’s time to call it. Xbox is dead. Time of death: February 20, 2026

God! Xbox dead again! Boring! Boring. Heard it all before.

InUrFoxHole5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

While I normally agree... The future of xbox is on shaky ground. Well, xbox as we know it. Im not sure what they are shooting for but who they put in charge mixed with Phil retiring and bond just flat out leaving. It's not looking good.

Levii_926h ago

Oh come on, Xbox has been dead for at least 10 years now. I think what’s more important right now is Playstation’s death that is very slowly but surely happening through mismanagement and greed.

InUrFoxHole5h ago

Some what agree. Sony is in a better position to unf#$k themselves. Xbox isn't.

Levii_921h ago

True i agree with that, xbox's got nothing

ocelot074h ago

I actually agree sooner Hust is gone the better.

Levii_921h ago

He's being clowned on by the entire internet but i have been clowning on him way before he became CEO. I hate modern PS so much man. To this day i have no idea how Astro Bot happend in this terrible PS era but that was clearly a miracle.

Grilla3h ago

Delusional take, why do xbots always project Xbox’s problems onto PlayStation?

The_Blue5h ago

This is why the views and comments are low, with lame articles that use divide-and-conquer pretensions.
