Random Rant about: Gears of War 3, Mass Effect 3, and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Okay. So let me start off first by saying that this is not a troll blog aimed at the Xbox or it's games. This is just a collection of my thoughts on these specific games, and my worries about them. Computers are limited in the amount of power they can put out. This is a given. A computer cannot run anything that requires more power/hardware than it has available. The Xbox, Playstation, and Wii are all just computers specialized for the purpose of gaming. This leads to the question of what are the developers going to do with these games to make them run on the Xbox360?

Gears of War 3
When Gears of War 2 came out any one who did research, and was able to suffer past the innumerable Rick-rolls, probably found the article where Cliff B. talked about how Gears 2 was going to be the best looking game on the Xbox360,. He said that the pushed the Xbox to it's limits and that visually Gears 2 was going to be the best the Xbox would ever get. Bold words. And while Gears 2 did look exceptionally good this leads to the question of; are they going to be able to improve the graphics for Gears 3? Or is Gears 3 going to run the same Graphics engine and are they just going to try and improve the story? With the statement that Gears 2 pushed the xbox to the limit how are they going to improve Gears 3?

Mass Effect 3
When Mass Effect 2 was first showcased at E3 it pushed the Xbox further than it could handle causing a majority of the Demo Xboxs to overheat and power down. Mass Effect 2 was downgraded to make it operate without melting the Xbox, and even then it still suffered terrible load times and frame rate drops. Now Bioware has developed a new, more powerful engine, the Mass Effect 3 engine. If Mass Effect 2 caused problems with the Xbox running the ME2 engine what are they going to do with the ME3? Are they going to run ME3 using the ME2 engine?

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Going back once a gain to the previous game, Oblivion, we realize that Oblivion suffered terrible frame rate drops, texture pop-ins, lag, screen tearing, and distance issues on the xbox360 (I'm not sure if this was prevalent only to Xbox, I didn't have the PS3 version for long enough to do a full battery of tests, but I know it's not a problem on a high end computer). Oblivion pushed Xbox relentlessly and the overall performance of the game suffered for it. The screen shots (Gameinformer magazine) for Skyrim look amazing, but this leads to the question of what are they going to do with the Xbox version. Maybe the new engine they made will help the issues, but I'm curious to see how they combat the problems that hurt oblivion.

These three games all pushed the Xbox to it's limit and a little further, and all of them suffered for it. With direct squeals coming out and no new Xbox on the horizon it leads me to wonder how they are going to try and improve upon their previous efforts. Everyone wants new better graphics and the "professional" reviewing sites are quick to jump on established games that don't show improvements in graphics and performance. With these games coming out and their prequels reaching the limit of the Xbox's power it may be time for Microsoft to release an new console to compete.

Pretty much a troll blog...

I had no problems with any of the games you mentioned... I had 6 hour runs on ME2 and not once did I have a problem with its load times or over heating.

Seriously stop thinking the PS3 or consoles for that matter are some graphical powerhouse, because they ain't.

You really are some kind of gullible bellend.

You really are some kind of genius. I'm not against the 360 for any means. I'm just curious how theyre going to improve those games If you actually read the blog you would notice where i said"When Mass Effect 2 was first showcased at E3 it pushed the Xbox further than it could handle causing a majority of the Demo Xboxs to overheat and power down. Mass Effect 2 was downgraded to make it operate without melting the Xbox, and even then it still suffered terrible load times and frame rate drops." First i said the e3 one had problems, second can you honestly say that looking at a ship for up to 30 seconds is not a long load time.

In my experience Oblivion ran pretty terribly on the PS3 as well. Most of the time it was fine, but the ending was a joke. It literally turned into a slideshow.

As far as that game is concerned, I think it was simply an engine issue, and maybe the lack of tweaking enough settings for the console releases.

As for the rest of the graphics concerns, I think a lot can be done to improve any game. Naughty Dog always say they max out the PS3, but games (even/especially their own) keep looking better. A lot of that is just PR.

1. Gears of War 2 ran on UE3. Gears of War 3 will run on UE3. It's not a new engine.

2. Mass Effect 2 ran on UE3. Mass Effect 3 will run on UE3. It's not a new engine.

I think you need to do a little more research..

So basically you're saying that they are not going to improve upon the engine to make Gears 3 run better or look better, and they're not going to use a new engine for Me3 on the Xbox when the PS3 and the PC ARE going to be running a new engine?

Are you insane? For the longest time here on n4g people have been arguing about the ME3 engine. IGN reported that ME2 on the PS3 will be running the ME3 engine. There were side by side comparisons of the two engines. Bioware said in their podcast that ME2 on PS3 is running the ME3 engine. But no of course YOU know better than THE PEOPLE WHO MADE THE GAME.

Secondly. Gears 2 did supposedly max out the xbox's capabilities. So what are they going to do with 3. If 2 maxed out the Xbox how are they going to make 3? See if 2 maxed out the xbox then they can't improve 3 because they can't move past the max. So by that logic 2 is going to look exactly the same as 3 (no improvement)

So you're saying there is going to be absolutely no improvement in the games on the Xbox when we know there IS going to be updated Engines on the PS3 and PC?

It's not a 'new' engine. It's an upgraded engine, it's still running UE3, with changes and upgrades of course but it is in no way a totally brand new engine.

I didn't say there will be no improvements, I'm saying that the engine is the same. I would be foolish to argue that devs won't optimize and tweak the engine to their game but the foundation is the same. ME2 ran much better than ME1 on PC because it was optimized much better.

With any system and engine span of life, the graphics will always get better. Point in case, if I'm sitting here looking back on the games of Super Nintendo, namely comparing Super Mario, and Super Mario RPG. Super Mario RPG was a game that graphically bypassed most games for Super Nintendo. Why? It's not any different hardware.

The answer is this: When a system is out that long (or an engine), and its software is developed, optimized, and polished, its going to out-do the prior games.

This stems from experience and knowhow on manipulation and digital trickery to increase the visual experience. Your not changing the hardware, your optimizing and manipulating the engine so the visuals are superior. You can make things look 30 times better than any game if you throw enough money at optimization.

I have personally noticed dropped framerates in all the games you mention, that is because there isn't enough man hours put in to make it a stable and flawless visual experience. Most games are trying to be better then the rest, but get pushed out the door faster then developers recommend.

"Mass Effect 2 was downgraded to make it operate without melting the Xbox, and even then it still suffered terrible load times and frame rate drops."

I'm not sure about you guys, but I've never suffered from a frame-rate drop while playing. The loading times aren't exactly ideal, but the animations they show --ship structures, how you're going from point A to B-- are certainly nice to see.
