When Did Graphics Stop Mattering?

Quite some time ago, I began to notice gamers exclaiming how "graphics don't matter," and phrases like "it's the gameplay, not the graphics!" Well, I say, since when did gamers stop caring about how their games look, and why has it become almost politically incorrect as a gamer to demand both great gameplay and amazing-looking,eye-popping colors and textures whilst playing said awesome gameplay? For that matter, many traditional online review sites have removed the category altogether in their reviews. Some could say that was done because PS3 and X360 games looked so similar, but what about now, with all the framerate drama, and what about Nintendo? For example, when COD:Ghosts showed up on Nintendo's Wii U,we heard about how Nintendo's online multiplayer can't compete with the other consoles, but what about graphically? We all assume PS4 games look better, but just how well did the XOne's framerate fair versus Nintendo's,and just how much did those textures have to be dialed back to run on Wii U?

It seems as though we stopped talking about graphics when ports became pretty much identical across the two main competitive platforms, and when Nintendo insisted on not caring about graphics, with the Wii. So, perhaps, the "graphics don't matter" statement originated largely from those Wii-only gamers, who had no choice but to stave off feelings of inadequacy with the other consoles sporting the likes of Uncharted, Bioshock, etc., whose offerings provided both great, fun gameplay and eye-melting visuals, while Wii gamers dealt with a Mario Kart that, while played great, actually could be argued to look a little worse than its Gamecube predecessor.

Fellow gamers, Nintendo fans or not, PSXONE fanboys or no, we do look at the games we play, and regardless of how I may sound here, we do still say "Ooh" and "Aah" at wonderful art direction, great mapping, creative color palettes, and super-res textures, and our discussion forums and rude rantings in comments sections provide plenty of evidence for that. Anyone who says graphics don't matter, frankly has no need for a game system beyond Super Nintendo, where many a pinnacle was achieved in gameplay mechanics and level design.

The real of it is, graphics matter a lot. There is no caveat,no "yeah but gameplay is more important." There is no reason we can't have, and shouldn't demand, both. Just how much has the gameplay changed in Call of Duty games? Not much, really. What was it about Second Son that made us all clamor for what's around the next bend? I mean, the game did offer up some unique mechanics, but man-oh-man was it beautiful! Even Nintendo's Mario Kart 8 has gained plenty of curb appeal from onlookers who became truly surprised at just how good Nintendo's "new Wii" can look!

Rest assured, graphics play a huge role in the enjoyment of our games, and reviews, articles, forums and simply gamers in general don't have hide that fact like its some kind of "gameplay vs graphics" conspiracy. We all argue it anyway, so put it back in the reviews, stop acting like people are dumb for liking pretty games and stop pretending we didn't notice that texture was a little too stretched on some of the rocks in Destiny. I for one am happy to say "Yeah well, I LOVED the way Elder Scrolls looked, but the gameplay, well that was little stiff.

Its okay, graphics whores, when it comes to modern AAA titles, perhaps the old theme song from "Married...With Children" sums it up most appropriately, "....you can't have one without the other."

When PS4 took the lead in graphics and sales...

xHeavYx4132d ago

Yep. I remember for most of last gen that a certain fanbase would gloat om how 3rd party titles looked better on their console of choice.
Now that the PS4 has the lead in the graphics area you hear all those "you can't tell the difference", "graphics don't matter" excuses

MysticStrummer4132d ago

Yeah so many talking points from last generation suddenly don't matter… graphics… market share… hell I remember when indies were a talking point.

The bottom line for me is the games, and Sony historically brings more of the games I want to play, but I also have a nice TV and would rather have a console that makes use of what that TV can do. I can certainly tell a difference.

darthv724132d ago

I have always said it like this... Graphics are nice to look at, but I don't play graphics. I play games. And I play different games for different reasons.

Fighting games I play because I like the CPU or human competition.

SHMUPS I play because I like space ship shooters.

Racing games I play because I like to go fast.

Action/ADV/RPG games I play because I like the story.

FPS...some have a story while others are just good time wasters.

Puzzle games I play because I like the thought provoking element they produce.

Sports games.........not so much.

And this is from someone who has been playing games since PONG so I have started from the bottom and played my way up. I have witnessed the evolution of gaming first hand.

gangsta_red4132d ago

Interesting because I remember how a certain fanbase (SONY) would say how their 3rd party games looked better, how they had deeper blacks and how they could(hilariously and always) see "jaggies" on the other console's version.

Not to mention when a 3rd party game didn't run well due to the developer actually stating that the cell architecture was hard to develop for, a certain fanbase would quickly spill out and say that particular developer was lazy and they ALWAYS said "Naughty Dog could do it!". I swear ND was the end all be all, go to escape card for all Sony game woes.

Not to mention how a certain fanbase blamed the other console for "supposedly" gimping their FF-13.

I also remember last gen when a certain fanbase was parading up and down the N4G streets about their superior exclusives and how good they looked, PC fans would say how they could play their games in 1080p and where quickly thrown out the party as a certain fanbase (SONY) said they didn't care and only the exclusives mattered!

And I love this misconception between graphics and resolution! No one said graphics doesn't matter, it's the resolution that a lot of us are arguing about and not noticing the huge difference between the multiplats.
I can always have 8 bit graphics in 1080p no problem.

But as usual a certain sony camp loves to move goal posts and pretend that they were always the victim the whole last gen and including this one.

So if graphics matter so much, why aren't you all on PC with a controller?

The graphics gap between PC and consoles are so wide that it makes console games seem like half a decade old piece of hardware.

If you compare the gap between even a Wii U and PS4, it is in the grand scheme of things so small that it doesn't even matter anymore.

Gone are the days when "hardware" enabled certain types of game play. Pretty much anything you can do to game play mechanics of significance can be done on the latest consoles including the Wii U. It is no longer that PS1 enabled 3D graphics and so on anymore.

We are reaching a point of limited gain from massive power difference in graphics and that artwork matter more.

Just look at some of the beautiful games on Wii U.

So I ask again, all you graphics screaming fans. Why aren't you on PC exclusively?

At least the real PC crowd, puts their money where their mouth is!

If graphics don't matter, why don't you go buy a PS1 game then?

darthv724132d ago

@heavy: "If graphics don't matter, why don't you go buy a PS1 game then?"

i dont really get this comment. Personally i still buy PS1 games. Hell i even still by 2600 and colecovision games. there are so many i missed out on and a majority of them still hold up well today. Maybe not graphically but they are still fun.

Shouldnt fun be the most important factor considering this industry is about entertainment?

@gangsta_red

Oh your poor thing
you pretty much talking about xbox fanboys this gen in your whole comment
also unlike last gen
all the best consoles version of multiplat games are Ps4 versions
while last gen
Ps3 and xbox 360 multiplat games looked the same after 2009
and they also got a point about developers didn't treat Ps3 as well as xbox360
Take Rockstar's RDR for example..which was a bit better on xbox360...and you kids bragged about that for ever..it was also made with Rage engine which you guys kept saying it don't run well on ps3

but out of no where
the best version of GTAV (which also much more open and use Rage engine to it limit)is on .....ps3 ?!
http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...
but how ?!..you guys said Rage engine don't run well on ps3 ?!

also DF said many times that Ps4 does not only get the nod for just higher Res
it also because the framerate and textuers and effects etc etc

this whole gen so far have been nothing but excuses coming from you and your friends
"Oh DF is Sony-baised"
"Oh Ps4 is selling more because it's in more places"
"Oh 720p/900p and 1080p are the same"
"Oh we don't care about Gfx now..it's all about teh *Fun*"
etc etc etc

BTW Sony fanboys do alot of those double standards...but you guys are just doing more

@donthate

Because Pc don't have the consoles exclusives ?!
Because Gamers enjoy Playstation and xbox consoles more ?!

also, if xbox was the more powerful console you and many others xbox fanboys would be the first to brag about Xbox Gfx and teh best multiplat console versions just like they did last gen
just like you guys used to brag about about sales last gen
but you can't do any of that any more

drop the act please
and stop hiding behind PC

GamingTruth4131d ago

donthate im not on pc cause i dont see the graphics gap between pc and consoles, ps4 exclusives are the best looking games til pc shows me something that trumps those graphics which it wont then ill go over to pc with a controller on my tv

donthate4131d ago (Edited 4131d ago )

heavy:

"If graphics don't matter, why don't you go buy a PS1 game then?"

I am talking about the recent generations not two decade old hardware. The difference between consoles are minimal, even between an PS3 and a PS4.

During the PS1 and to some extent PS2 there were significant meaningful ways games evolved due to the increased processing power.

Whatever you can achieve on PS4 is basically what you can achieve on PS3 with minimal meaningful changes. Everything is just a little bit better, but let's face it even a PC game doesn't change much from it's console counterpart.

That is because console hardware is facing the exact same problem desktop pc's have been suffering for some time now. The hardware is practically good enough for our needs, and everything else is just a little extra if that.

That still doesn't answer my real question to all the people that claim "resolution and frame rate" is so important. Why aren't you on PC?

Surely a PC more powerful than a measly PS4 is achievable at $400 and the games will be significantly cheaper to boot!

So why aren't you all on PC if graphics is soooo important?

And Killzone SF and now DriveClub sucked rope despite being pretty and shiny 1080p

1stPersonHuman4130d ago

PS4 doesn't match PC in graphics, so you could say when the new consoles came out in general

CourierSix4132d ago

Neither should over-ride one another. The graphics should compliment the gameplay and vice versa. This generation and I'd even dare to say last generation gamers are becoming harder and harder to please. I like to think I'm ok with sub-par graphics if the gameplay is good, but it does kinda bug me...we just need to remember they aren't everything, but yeah graphics matter.

Rugga234132d ago

When PS4 became the leader of 8th gen and made people sour.

Big_Game_Hunters4132d ago (Edited 4132d ago )

They still matter to me, thats why i have a strong PC that can run gmes at 1080p everytime and then some. But graphics are still very LOW on the priority list, even for a "graphics whore"pc gamer like myself.

Review - God of War: Sons of Sparta (PS5) | WayTooManyGames

WTMG's Leo Faria: "God of War: Sons of Sparta is a very interesting prologue to the series as a whole, and a welcome return to the franchise’s original Greek setting, but as a metroidvania… I mean, it’s good, but it’s nothing I haven’t seen and played dozens of times before, especially in a post-Silksong and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. But I still love the fact it exists. The fact it’s somewhat unambitious and smaller in scope might actually be my favorite thing about it. This is a type of game I missed from Sony, something more focused, streamlined, to the point. I’d rather have three or four games like Sons of Sparta a year then yet another live service whose servers will be shut off after just two or three months."
