Americans are Stupid

I love N4G and visit the site on a daily basis, but as I read the comments, too many times I read someone saying how stupid Americans are. At first, I ignored it, mostly because I understand why; the war,  President Bush and most importantly, ignorant Americans that don't know or care about anything outside of the US. But as the anti-American remarks persisted, I feel obligated to bring certain issues to light. Truths that have been forgotten in the rush to find a villain. When we call Americans stupid in a generalized fashion, we are not only calling them stupid, but also the rest of the world. The U.S. afterall is mostly made up of immigrants or descendants of immigrants. That fact is even reflected in the names of many  prominant cities like "New York" named after Yorkshire or Los Angeles, spanish for "The Angels".  Speaking of which, these two cities are further apart than the entire European continent. So why is it widely accepted that French people are different from Italians, yet all Americans must be the same. This rationalism is fundamentaly flaud and alienates even the kindest and most intellegent Americans. For those who have had a bad experience with an American either online or thru forums. You must differentiate between a stupid American and a stupid teen who is American. I wrote this blog in the hopes that N4G can remain a site for all. An international voice that lets us bitch and complain, in all languages, about what we are all here for...games.

The title offended me at first, but I continued reading, and I understand that you take the opposite view.

I know plenty of people who need to read this.

Approved.

I figured it would grab your attention, plus it helps to get you in the right mood for the subject matter.

New York? Not named after Yorkshire, but the town of York. Yorkshire is a county.

Anyway, to be brutally honest, you talk of generalisations, and then it's generalisations similar to that (New York = Yorkshire) that that make people think you are ignorant in general. And as you aren't an immigrant, (neither am I, but I have had experience moving to other countries) maybe you don't know that immigrants HAVE to adopt the same attitudes to fit in with society.

But I know VERY well, that there are Americans that aren't stupid and that don't support Bush or the war in Iraq. Obviously, because it's exactly the same as Britain in many ways. We are ignorant, noisy, opinionated and often wrong.

But I think the difference is the way America as a government and as a society separates itself, and at times seems to have a false sense of grandeur.

The way that for example on N4g it is assumed that the only sales that matter are those in American, because of the assumption outside of America there is hardly any sold. This actually goes hand in hand with a general assumption of geography by those stereotyped Americans. For example I can tell you where most of the major cities are in America, and yet you may have trouble telling me where London is (without a map). Again a generalisation, but Americans answer this yourselves honestly and see if I am fair.

Another example (both were intended to be gaming related for N4g but got deviated by geography) was the support for the 360 console, which although may not be seen on this site it is or was evident all across the American media last year. I am not saying it's bad to support the 360, but if it weren't for media support, the 360 would not have done half as well. And as it is, it only sells well in Americanised countries (i.e America and Britain).

I would be ignorant to call Americans ignorant. Most of the sensible people understand and won't claim ignorance to Americans as a whole, but either at the individual, or as I have done in the past, generalise the indivdual as someone who strengthens the ignroant and yet unjust American stereotype.

I think I am fair, but if you disagree, please tell me otherwise. I coudl not totally expalin myself here, and I do genuinely believe I came off way too negative.

I'm afraid that's the way things are. just like every black guy is a gangster, every brown guy is a terrorist and so on. I'm not American and i don't think Americans are stupid. sure there are stupid Americans, but then again there are stupid people everywhere. you just can't judge a whole nation by the decisions that a selective few made. i just hope you Americans remember that before calling me(a Muslim) a terrorist.

kapedkrusader6525d ago

It's amazing how minority of bigots and racist are loud enough to make all Americans look bad.

ravinash6525d ago

"It's amazing how minority of bigots and racist are loud enough to make all Americans look bad".

Well thats true of most cultures really. French, English, Australians all have own image.
I think the big thing that sticks in peoples minds about Americans is your president, The way he talks and the things he does have not helped.
Of course there are also people in the American south and the Anglican church who's values people from the outside can't always understand, Owning Guns, and using violence in protest to abortions that sort of thing.

Don't get me wrong, America has done a lot of good things for the world with its humanitarian efforts, the space program, The bill of rights to name a few. I don't think anyone who has a bit of intelligence really thinks all Americans are stupid but you do make your selves an easy target and everyone loves taking shoots at the top dog.

I am a very patriotic person. I serverd in the Army and went to Iraq I am now serving my community as a fire fighter. I grew up in Russia with my father and traveled all over Europe and lived in many of its countries and worked in many as well. Let me help explain a little on why we are perceived this way.

Ok lets say a group of American tourists go to England for example. This is a generalization keep in mind. They are fat, arrogant, loud and make themselves targets. They wear T shirts that look like American flags. They wear huge ugly straw hats and Socks pulled up to their knees with sandals and short ass shorts... Sorry but from any standard this looks "Stupid" or "Moronic" Now can you picture yourself being a British business man going to Monoco to do business and your on a plane with a group of American tourists. Maybe 10 of them. They can be heard anywhere on the plane with kids going crazy and mis behaved. Deep southern accents talking across the plane "Ethel where did you put the Suntan Lotion?" Your on a plane jack ass figure it out later. Is this bad? Well in Europe most people don't say something if it's not worth saying. Just from your mannerisms you stand out as an American. Americans seem to talk to hear themselves talk and make cheezy jokes.

Having said all that I have a copy of the constitution on my mantel and love what the United States was founded upon. I can never stress that I think we are the greatest country in the world and I would gladly sacrifice my own life for any American. Saying I am not a patriot pisses me off. My old Platoon Sergeant once told me he would bleed on the flag to make sure the stripes stayed red. I follow those sentiments.

You can not help who represents you though in Europe/Asia/South America as far as tourists go. They see these people and think thats who we are. When its old southern money or snobby New York jerks who give us a bad rap going into a Pub and trying to convince the Brits about how great "football" is and explaining that they don't play "football" they play "soccer"

As far as the war in Iraq goes. I could ramble for days about it. Was it right? I dont think so. Granted we got a bad guy. One of the very very many running many many countries. I mean look at the Warlords in Africa taking children and making them bullet shields. Look at the drug lords in South America and Asia. What made Saddam such a bad guy compared to Chechen Guerilla Fighters? Well either way it was a political choice and the world looks at it and thinks we we're stupid for it. When really it was Bush. Another of those stupid southern(I have nothing agains't the south. Some old confederates and KKK type ideals are just more prevelant and historically that is a great area of trouble. Mostly I just hate the accent =P) hicks that I feel promotes a bad rep for us all.

The Principals we were founded upon are the greatest ideals ever. Freedom is not free and the rest of the world knows what we have done for them. Many Jews across the world thanks us every night. Many Brits do too. Those old enough to remember WW2. However in the US you learn things differently. No matter what country you are in you learn history differently. We lost about 500,000 Soldiers in WW2 while Russia lost 26 million.... Who do you think really turned the tides of WW2? You think the US but without Russia we had "No" chance in hell.

Now(Sorry to keep using Europe as an example it's just what I know) People in Europe who think all Americans are ignorant look like tool bags and at the same time how many of your friends can point out Iraq on a map? Apparently 90% of the US can't. I remember a Jay Leno show where he went to a college graduation in the Us and interviewed a bunch of kids and asked them if the moon was a star and they all said "Of course" "yes"... College grads!!!! That is ignorance at its finest. That is what Europe see's. Most of the people in europe speak at least 2 languages and their schooling is a lot more advanced then the US. In 3rd grade Russians are learning about "War and Peace" Most college grads in the US couldn't get past the first few pages... now I think Tony Blair is just as much of a tool bag ass kisser as Bush but how many people in the US even know who he is? How many people in Europe do? A table conversation in Europe involves well thought out discussions on politics, Religion and educated thoughts on all as they have read books by Milton, William Wordsworth, Blake and many other literary figures. People in the US may have read Romeo and Juliet but no one has any opinion on it as they are pretty ignorant and most table conversations are loud and filled with nothing useful.

look the US has a lot of work to do and I understand both sides of the coin. I hope you can see this as well.

I didn't have a lot of time to spell and grammar check this but I hope I got my point across well.

Game on.

kapedkrusader6525d ago

You are exactly the other "invisible" side of America that the world should see. It seems to me that, like you stated, only the redneck hicks or arrogant metropolitan jerks are representing the whole of the United States. Because of this, I'm glad that you and many others participated in this post. It helps to add even a little more weight to the opposite side of the scale.

NO_PUDding6525d ago

Well to be fair, it's generally those kind of Americans that MAKE themselves heard. And we only remember them because we found what they are saying unpleasant.

@ 3.3

Wow. Just wow. What did I say that offended you? I am 25. I have a life. A great girlfriend who is very cute and loves games. I have a house over my head and good friends and family. To say you wish I had died in the war... I lost friends over there. Brothers to me.

I have 2 brothers and a sister who were in the Army as well. One ranger one rigger and a medic. My sister won the purple heart and a bronze star for saving 8 peoples lives... My brothers and I could not be more proud that she did that. We ourselves have all experienced fire fights and seen death first hand all in the name of... Well whatever we fight for but mainly I did it for you. So you have the right to feel and speak your mind but wow...

All I wanted to do was share a side that not everyone see's. I have seen and done so much in this world that maybe you can not understand and maybe never will... I am sorry for that.

I am humbled by that. I can't understand what made you so upset...

Regards, Jinx

LinuxGuru6524d ago

I am absolutely, stunningly, totally mortified at what the commenter @ 3.3 wrote.

How dare you condemn a fellow gamer, my fellow American, and most importantly, my fellow human being to a death he would NEVER deserve.

I put shame upon you, and I hope one day that you learn the horrible power of your words.

Shame on you, young man.

Shame on you.

Britjadg6524d ago

@ Jinxster and John V

the dude has two bubbles and is clearly after a rise out you guys.
naming and shaming him will end up being about as productive as a belief that new york was founded on yorkshire, and that flawed is spelt flaud.

@ 47. i'm sorry but you're by far the most ignorant kid i have come across. you're entitle to your opinion but to suggest the media CONTROLLS anything is something out the realms of Metal Gear Solid. The Media in america doesn't manipulate, it simply reports, it can INFLUENCE but it does not CONTROL and it works on the premise that people can generally make an informed decision on something. every media outlet around the world is the same, apart from those that hold a monopoly. i.e they are the only media outlet so they can say what they like - think north korea for example and those countries (who shall remain nameless, who censor the media on the internet). as to american worship of celebs, its the same for every western country i can think of. you need to go back to school and plead with someone there to teach you the way of the world - or you're not gonna get far in life.

you see the problem with these kind of debates are that they are circular, "americans are stupid" is a stereotype, just like the french are "surrender monkeys" and the british are "teadrinking sissys"

they're called stereotypes for a reason, they're not true to all; hell in a lot of cases they are not even necessarily true of the majority, so whats the point in defending it? the COS (french special forces) are some of the toughest badasses around, britain gets more of a rep for heavy drinking and football hooliganism than it does tea drinking in europ, and next to china/japan; america is the most technologically advanced nation in the world, if they were stupid do we believe this would be the case?

my rather longwinded point is this: europeans (and the rest of the world) dont need to be shown the other side of americans. just like you guys dont need to know that every "rag head" in the middle east is a terrorist.

A very well written comment and i agree with all of it, except about Tony Blair, he's not our prime Minister anymore. We have a Scottish guy called Gordon Brown who looks like Shrek when he turned human in Shrek 3.

And yes, in europe all we see is the stupid side of Americans, except for John Stuart, he's clever, oh and that Steven Hawking guy.

... and when the US president says things like ""Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we."
- we start to think who the hell picked this guy?

Jinxstar6525d ago

Agreed I was referring to more when the War in Iraq started. Thanks though =D

kapedkrusader6525d ago

What you must also keep in mind is that many people in the United States are very religious, which also plays a part. I remember my friend telling me that her parents were voting for Bush because even though they didn't like him, they disliked gay marriage even more and apparently Senator Kerry wasn't anti-gay enough. To me, that is not a good way to pick a President, but, everyone has there own agendas and reasons for voting for a specific candidate. More than having Bush as President, what has harmed US world relations the most might have been making too many political choices based on religious beliefs. Many might not agree, but, I'd rather they suggest an alternative well developed opinion than an assinine, "America Sucks!" comment.

Jinxstar6524d ago (Edited 6524d ago )

The problem with voting IMHO goes far beyond "Oh shes a woman Ima vote for her" or "He don't like they homo's" I believe voting is a right for everyone but just like freedom isn't free neither should voting be. I think people need to take a test to vote. just my opinion though because in the end it comes down to the lesser of 2 or 3 evils... I don't want to chose the best of the worst. I want the best of the best.

Also yes many people in the states are religious but many do it without knowledge. Mormons... I respect them a lot. Reasoning being many of them know their religion and follow it through faith and not blindly. When they come to your door they aren't sales men. If you ever invite them in many just want to talk and will even leave religion out of it. They are kind and know their religion well because many of them were converted and can back up most any argument well. many others though (wont name names) can't defend their religion when you say something like "I thought everyone had to earn their way into heaven... What about the Jew's. They are the choosen ones, Deemed so by god, so they get a free pass? Explain" and they lock up and go off on some other tangent. Thats my only problem with it... but still it's just an opinion. =P

The title of the article couldn't be more correct. As a nation and society as a whole, Americans are extremely stupid. America is a nation of sheep, driven by the simplest and material of possessions. This is evident in Americans WORSHIP of celebrities and television. Americans care more about what designer dress/suit their favorite celebrity is wearing to the next big pointless awards ceremony than what is going on in their own back yard, not to mention others back yards. Most Americans don't even realize they are being controlled and manipulated, NOT by the government or the President, but by the media. The media runs America and Americans are too stupid to realize it, they just follow behind like a blind-deaf mutt. Americans jump on the fastest growing fad, hang on for dear life then jump ship the minute someone else tells them its time.
People don't think Americans are stupid because of the war or the President, people think Americans are stupid because of Americans.
Americans REFUSE to take blame for the mistakes they themselves make, which is why you see Americans suing fast food chains because their kid happens to be fat. Americans are the greediest society in the world and its so blatantly clear to EVERYONE except Americans themselves.
Americans flat out can not think for themselves and that is the highest form of stupidity one can achieve.

Exhaust6525d ago

Welcome to my ignore list. You obviously have NOTHING positive to offer this or any other discussion regardless of topic.

I for one HATE George W. Bush. That's right I said HATE. I voted against him TWICE and was so distraught when he was reelected I was ashamed and depressed for weeks. That being said you lump me into the same generalized category. I'm sure you wouldn't appreciate people lumping you into the same category as everyone in your home country.

You sir, are ignorant and above all a hypocrite. Shame on you.

Did you type that word for word from the pamphlet that was attached to the back of your Koran.
j/k
but on a lighter note I am seeking damages against Burger King because there wasn't double bacon on my bacon double cheeseburger.lol

ATLRoAcH6524d ago (Edited 6524d ago )

Your comment has really filled me with rage. Why? Because I'm the exact opposite of everything you said. I DON'T let the media run me. But you do. I can tell by your entire sh!tfest of a comment that you are judging America from what you've learned from the media and that alone. Have you ever met an American? If I was rich I would fly you out here and prove to you just how wrong and ignorant you are. I f@cking can't stand the media and how obsessed they are with celebrities. I'm my own person, I'm not controlled by fads. I like so many Americans are outcasts with their own unique style and personality. I'm completely offended by your comment and I can't wait for karma to bite you in your ass for your shallow view on America. I respect all places in the world. I don't judge a single person let alone a whole country. You are a prime example of ignorance and I am truly sorry that you feel the way you do. I hope you open your eyes one day and see how full of it you are.

You wanna know whats great about America. The people. We have people from all over the world here in the states and I love that. Thats whats great about this country. Thats why America has such a rich culture. Not everyone here is perfect but thats the case everywhere. Everyday more and more people come to our country and fall in love with the life they find here. No matter what race or religion you are you are free to be in America and thats beautiful. Come this November I'm voting for Obama in the hopes of making this country even better. I have respect for EVERYONE in the world and I hope that rubs off on you.

I hope you have a wonderful day. I don't know you so I'm not going to just write you off. Although if I were to judge you by that comment you made I would say you are a miserable person who doesn't appreciate life or the people around you. You have absolutely no respect.

At first I was really mad when I read your comment but now its making me sad. I really am sorry for the way you feel.

Sincerely,
ATLRoAcH (Atlanta,GA)
