I just wanted to gather the main arguments coming from the action side of this war, and respond to them in kind. I've yet to hear a legitimate argument for the seemingly-wanted eradication of turn-based. You know what it all comes down to?
Say it with me: "I don't like turn-based". That's fine, but that's just YOU. Millions of people do. Millions of people feel the same way about action games that you do about turn-based.
I also believe many of you have an image of turn-based in your heads that is ancient and inaccurate to what a modern AAA turn-based game would be, as I mention below.
So, here we go:
“Just go play the original”
Yes, because we’ve all been asking for this remake for all these years…just to turn around and play the original. /sarcasm
All this time, we’ve been dreaming of a game that plays like Final Fantasy 7, but looks like a modern AAA game. It’s that simple. That doesn’t mean the battle system has to be 100% the same in every way (though there will undoubtedly be some who feel that way).
They can, should, and will update the battle system. But, that’s a very different statement than saying, “we’re going to change genres, and make it an action-RPG”.
However they update it, the CORE of the battle system must remain in-tact. That means that it needs to be a turn-based RPG, in the ATB style.
“Final Fantasy 7 already did turn-based. Let’s do something different.”
You know what? Turn-based IS that something different! That’s a BIG REASON why we’ve been clamoring for it. Part of this is clamoring for CHANGE! EVERY modern AAA game is some form of action/shooter. And here you are asking for more of the same, while masking it as “something different”.
“This is a remake, not a remaster”
Sorry, but we’re not the ones misunderstanding the difference here; you are. The word “remaster” in reference to video games is a fairly new thing. It didn’t really happen until this generation. The reason this happened, is that we finally reached a point where the games we wanted to “remake” were already in fully-rendered 3D. It was not NECESSARY to remake them from the ground up. We could simply upgrade the textures, and achieve the same desired effect.
So, the only difference between a “remake” and a “remaster” is that the former is rebuilt from the ground up, and the latter is simply upgrading the textures. “Change everything” is not any part of the definition. The word you’re looking for is “reimagining”. Honestly, when I see this argument, I have to assume that you’re very young, and new to gaming.
“Turn-based is outdated”/“Modern technology allows for so much more”
That’s weird…since the first RPG I ever played was an action-RPG that was first made in the 1970’s. How advanced that was! Oh, wait…we’ve had a myriad of action-RPGs ever since then, existing alongside the turn-based RPGs the entire time. /sarcasm
I have no idea where this idea came from. It’s parroted endlessly. Action-RPGs are not new. They are not more “modern” than turn-based RPGs. This is simply from people with a superiority complex, who feel the need to say “my games > yours”, and make other types of games seem “illegitimate”. It’s insanely immature.
Sometimes, I think people associate random battles and turn-based, as if they’re permanently locked together. That may lead to the thinking that turn-based was formed from “technological limitations”, when in reality, only random battles were. Those are no longer necessary (even though some still prefer them).
“They have to appeal to the younger generation”
Agreed. They are a business. They need new fans to continuously join the old ones. Here’s the thing: THEY CAN DO THAT WITH A TURN-BASED RPG! Yeah, yeah, that’s an insane statement, right? No. People have this ridiculous image of ALL turn-based RPGs in their heads, which basically looks like the original Dragon Quest game.
The image in your heads is extremely warped and inaccurate. Why has that happened? Because it’s been SO LONG since we’ve had a AAA turn-based RPG. You know, a game in the genre that actually takes itself seriously and TRIES. People actually associate the genre with borderline shovelware, because for the most part, that’s how it exists in the modern industry.
This is why it’s unpopular. What made it popular in the past? Holy crap. Final Fantasy 7. Why did Final Fantasy 7 make it popular? Holy crap. It was a full-fledged AAA game. What a shocker. That SAME EXACT opportunity is right before our eyes. Final Fantasy 7 can do it TWICE, if SquareEnix takes advantage. If not, goodbye Final Fantasy, and goodbye AAA industry.
No, I’m not exaggerating. The AAA industry WILL CRASH unless something drastically changes. AAA games are extremely “samey”. A AAA turn-based Final Fantasy 7 behemoth is exactly the kind of change that can turn things around, and bring the kind of variety that the AAA industry needs, in order to survive. We could be looking at a revolution that would put us back in the golden age of the industry. I sure hope SquareEnix realizes that…
“It would look ridiculous”
Why? Again, you’re going by the warped view that’s in your head. You’re imagining people standing in a line, and jumping forward to attack, then jumping back (as Nomura recently described it in an interview). That has NOTHING TO DO with turn-based. That’s PRESENTATION.
Turn-based is fully capable of being presented in a believable manner, with characters moving around enemies at all times, and even doing feints or “failed attacks” while waiting for their turn.
Open your minds. Think outside the box.

For Southeast Asia, new price changes.
Prices effective starting May 1st, 2026.
Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses
The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

CGMagazine writes: "And as I said, the actual game of Kiln is so genuinely boring that playing it to unlock the creative tools was such a massive chore that I genuinely started to resent it by the end. Battling is a monotonous button masher. There are only five arenas, and despite being based on different gods from various mythologies, none are particularly memorable in visual style or music. And it’s all just such a homogeneous mess of nothing."

Skewed and Reviewed have posted an interview with Author Mike Diver about his pending book on Aliens video games.
I agree with you all the way.Why do you think gamers are so...volitial? I would love a AAA turn-based RPG. Ive always loved those type of games.
I normaly do not play JRPGs, but FF7 is one of my favorite games of all time and the reason is partly due the the simple yet deep mechanics of it.
I do believe that Final Fantasy VII remake WILL be turned based. I think people do imagine that a turn based system would be EXACTLY as in the original, and that's why they think it would be ridiculous and outdated.
I am able to imagine a way to make it turn based with graphics like Final Fantasy XV. Like you said, it is just about presentation.
I am more worried about the graphics though. Will the go all out and do graphics like FFXV, or will they be toned down or in a different art-style? Also, how big will the game be? Will it be a full AAA game, or a game that could be considered a smaller (maybe a $40 game)? I am more worried about those things than the battle system.
When planning the remake, I would assume that Nomura and everyone involved had to go through every element and make decisions about all those things, that ultimately led to decision of making the remake and announce it. I think that all those things al already in place, and they just have to make them now.
Its not going to be turn based. I can carefully explain to u in an extremely long post why not if you want just to end this topic once n 4 all.
Here are my 2 cents into whether FF7 Remake will be on XboxOne.
One of the main reasons SE is finally doing this is cause console sales in Japan is at an all time low. Just like back in 1996-7 when SE released the original FF7 in Japan it boosted console sales specifically the PSone astronomically. It was the Golden Age of console gaming in Japan the years that SE & Playstation were very tight.
SE is trying to do the same with the remake & hopefully have the same results with the PS4 this time. Since the Xbox brand is pretty much non-existent in Japan the PS4 was the only choice.
As for whether they release the game over seas to America you have to factor in a few points. FF13 released on the 360 when it was at its highest point with an immeasurable lead on the PS3 yet the sales were higher on the PS3 than on the 360 even with that massive install base. Microsoft even garnered the advertising rights for the game in America. Subsequent sequels did even worst on the 360.That was the first sign to SE.
2nd they released exclusive JRPGs on the system like Last Remnant, Infinite Indiscovery, Star Ocean 4 & those tanked faster than the Titanic. With Star Ocean SE had to release a PS3 version to make up the costs of development.
3rd FF15 is only releasing on multiplatforms cause the what 10 years of R&D and development of that game originally exclusive to the PS3 were so high that making it multiplat was the only way to recoup the time & cost.
However even with such a massive game on the way & SE even put a demo of it on FF Type-0 the sales of Type-0 on the Xbox One is laughable (80k according to VGchartz compared to the 500k on PS4). With such a high profile demo included into an already quality game like Type-0 Xbox fans didn't care.
As for Kingdom Hearts Disney probably had a hand at that since they want their name across everything they possibly can. Since SE & Disney are partners in the development of the game it was only natural that game too would eventually be multiplat.
Which brings me back to FF7. If SE intended to release FF7 on the Xbox they would have done so already with the PC port, but they didn't. Why is that? It probably goes way back to the original release. When the original FF7 was released Sony had publishing rights for it in America while SE had it for Europe & Japan. I think those publishing deals are still in effect even after all these years.
Also SE is finally getting back to financial stability & it may be a coincedance that it all started with SE & Playstation being 'partners' again. Look at this years E3 almost every Japanese themed game that SE announced is Playstation only like Nier, Star Ocean, World of Final Fantasy. FF14 after its troubles is profitable cause of the partnership with Playstation & PC tandem.
SE has turned a corner, last gen when they decided to be aligned with Xbox it was a very troubling time for the company with investments not paying off. I think SE has learned from that mistake & that being with Playstation is a much better fit for them in the long run.
Sorry for the long post just me throwing my hat into the ring.
A sidenote: I will never forget when SE came on stage for the Xbox conference & said FF13 was coming to the system. The Xbox 'fanboys' ate that news up laughing in the face of Playstation fans. I wasn't here on N4G for that so i don't know the horror stories of that. However even with all that boasting from Xbox supporters most of them didn't care to support the game. The sales of that game if those 'boasting' were true should have been huge, so why were they not? Can Xbox supporters answer that for me.
