Next generations offers more than just better graphic.

It was already known that both the PS4 and Xbox One would arrive by the years end in most territories, now it is official the PS4 will launch on November 15th in the US and Canada followed by Europe, Australia and New Zealand on the 29th. Microsoft on the other hand will launch the Xbox One on November 22nd in 13 territories including the UK and USA. This puts each launch within a week of each other only this time it will be Sony who launches first although that will only be for the US and Canada. The following week Microsoft will launch in 13 territories meaning they hit the European market first and possibly catch some extra sales, although it’s highly unlikely that anyone who hasn't already decided which platform to pick up will be getting one this side of Christmas. Sony then rounds out November with the PS4’s European launch.

Now that we know exactly when both consoles will be available what exactly does next gen have to offer gamers? yes they will have more ram, faster processors and better graphic fidelity that make games look prettier, but that’s not all next gen is looking to offer. Both Sony and Microsoft are looking to offer new ways to play, and provide players with new ways to interact with their consoles like never have before. These next gen systems are new for everyone, but for some it could very well be their first console meaning that Sony and Microsoft have to consider how much the landscape has changed over the last 10 years and what people now expect of a console is drastically different from when the 360 and PS3 launched. Most of those changes are evident in the way both companies are offering motion controls, voice recognition and multimedia media services. This is down to the fact that motion controls accommodate younger generation gamers who are used to motion controls, making each platform more accessible to new users and provide a nice way to navigate through system menus. Each platform will be accompanied by redesigned controllers that have been heavily influenced by consumer and developer feedback, judging from the positive feedback surrounding numerous hands-on time with both systems. The new Dual Shock 4 seems to be head and shoulders better than its younger brother the Dual Shock 3 and is now more than ideal for first person shooters. Microsoft has also redesigned their controller to make the Xbox’s joy pad better providing better feedback and allowing the triggers to provide a greater degree of control. The Dual Shock 4 also has a touch display that doubles as a button, which allows developers to present more natural ways for player to perform in-game actions.

One of the big things that next gen is looking to do is further the social aspects of gaming and strengthen social connectivity. The social aspects that already exist will be carried over from the previous generation like party voice chat, clans, friend lists and the competiveness establish through achievements and trophies. Sony is also supporting voice chat this time around making it easier for players to have private conversations with friends, both Sony and Microsoft recognise this as an important feature so are including a headset it the system. New social features include the ability to stream and share gameplay footage from either where other gamers and friends can comment on your progress. This is made ever better by the fact the Twitch TV is available on both platforms. Something that Sony mentioned a while ago was that the PS4 would allow for a friend to take control of your game to help get past a certain point as if they were sitting next to you. These features are an addition to the pre-existing features and will further complement the various second screen experiences that developers are working on.

Social connectivity will be even greater than it was before due the ability to communicate with PSN or Xbox live friends via your smartphone or tablet allowing you to stay connected regardless of where you happen to be. The connection between the new systems and other devices has resulted in the ability to make purchases from your smartphone which then your system to start the download at home the system will then shut down once the download is complete.

Developers are furthering the social aspect of games by enabling social aspects in games that for the most part would be considered single player experiences. These aspects can be subtle things like the messages left behind by other players in demon souls or it could be that what you believe just to be another NPC could actually be another player who has invaded your world. Ubisoft have shown how the barrier that stands between single player and multi-player can be broken. In Watch Dogs other players can invade your space and start hacking your data at which point you have the opportunity stop if you can track down and take out the invading player. This element adds a level of unpredictably that causes players to be more suspicious of NPCs altering the player experience, all of this is optional however as you can still play while you aren’t connected to the internet.

Persistent game worlds also appear to be another key feature for next gen where developers are aiming to blur or remove the lines that separate a games single and multi-player components. This means that whatever you do in single player can be carried over to multi-player and vice-versa. Bungie aims to achieve this with Destiny a game which isn’t an MMO per se, but more of a public space, according to Pete Parson Co-founder of Bungie, where players can join up and progress together. So you might be playing solo then discover a public space an area where you can team up with other players in an attempt to ease the challenge. Regardless of how the game is played character progression remain persistent so whatever progress you make while solo will applied and carried over whenever you’re playing online.

So not only will the next generation of gaming deliver higher graphic fidelity during each of the systems life cycles, but the level of social connectivity will become even greater and game worlds will continue to become more persistent and further blur the line between single player and multiplayer. That is until we reach a point when each system can always be connected to the internet which would allow for games to be open for everyone to drop in and out of. Due to the new consoles having this new level of connectivity and x 86 system architecture allows new models to make the transition more easily, making FTP and MMO games more viable on consoles. This means that the catalogue of games that were already possible will grow even further, and the PC like architecture combined with the ability to self-publish makes getting Indies onto consoles easier than ever before.

Crimson Desert Review [Capsule Computers]

Travis Bruno of Capsule Computers writes:

"Through a few decades of gaming there have been many excellent games that still can stand the test of time today even on their original platform and countless others that have been easily forgettable and lost to collecting dust on a shelf or in a box. Only over the last few console generations have gamers been able to see their games improved over the course of patches and touch-ups thanks to the internet and while some games remained buggy, they were still beloved. Similarly, other titles offered such an expansive open world that players could sink countless hours into it and find a striking narrative whenever they chose to dive into it rather than explore a new cave or dungeon.

Over the better part of the last two weeks Crimson Desert has been a game that has seen some lows and some incredible highs throughout our time with the game. To top that off, Pearl Abyss has been so quickly patching issues and even adding content, that entire notes about previous issues were struck away as the experience continued to smooth out and impress at almost every turn. Bearing all the signs that it started as an MMO, the transition to a single-player game may not have been painless, but Crimson Desert has delivered a world that deserves to be explored and lost in for hours on end in one of the most surprising out-of-nowhere titles in the last few years."
