The day my PS3 died

Last week while I was online playing the esteemed Call of Duty 4 with a friend of mine, something horrible happened: My PS3 died. It did not go gently into that good night, but go it did. And I was sad.

It started as a match had begun when my PS3 froze. I then go to shut down and restart it when even the power button in front didn't work. Surprised, I shut down the PS3 via the power switch in back and then tried to restart it. It froze again, repeat steps 1 and 2. I then get a screen that it will be attempting to rebuild my database. I think to myself, "Okay. No big deal. I'll be back online and fragging dumbasses in no time."

Then the rebuild failed. I was becoming more alarmed but no overly so. i mean, this is a PS3 after all, not a 360, I should be good to go. My PS3 recommends to format the hard drive so I do and then: Nothing. Upon start up it says Sony Computer Entertainment and then I get to stare at the wave. That's it.

Now I get depressed, but I figure it's just something with the hard drive so I open her up and find the fucking Spanish armada of dust in the HDD bay. I exaggerate, but there was a surprising amount of dust in the bay. I'm not a neat freak about my PS3, I'l wipe it down every couple of weeks. My point is while I'm not attacking my PS3 with compressed air every day, neither am I like that tool  last year who had a dust factory in his PS3 and through it in the dirt when it seemed too clean.

So, back to my tragic tale, I call Sony the next day hoping that maybe a simple hard drive swap and downloading the software will make it all good. The answer: no. The guy told me that formatting the hard drive would not erase the XMB and since my PS3 is over a year old it is out of warranty. But for the low, low price of $149.99 (plus tax) I can exchange my dead PS3 for a new one.

I joke about the price to replace it because it's kind of bullshit, but at the same time it's nice not to not have to pay another $400-$500 again to get another PS3.

Anyway, I just need to find my Bestbuy receipt to get a brand new one for Free.99, my favorite price. Any thoughts? Only serious ones please; there is no need to make a flame war out of this.

Damn, that's messed up. I don't know what to tell you . . . my receipt for my PS3 is in the same place as it's been since I took the PS3 out of the box . . . namely, in the PS3 box in my closet.

but the PS3 has a very low failure rate. Again, it happens but it's a product that this sort of thing doesn't happen to often. GO ahead and survey other PS3 owners and you'll see that you're apart of a small minority. Good luck to you in the future.

oh, nice. You are getting a new one not a refurbished unit?

-EvoAnubis-6577d ago

How the HELL did you lose bubbles? I'm going to do my part to correct that.

Lord Anubis6577d ago

I'm not sure, I was stripped of my 8 bubbles (lost3) with in a few minutes without provocation. I think there's a mod that had something to do with it. I aksed Dusty but he did not reply. :(

Yeah, well that's BS. I got your back. We Anubi have to stick together . . . or something like that.

Obviously, you've never read my profile or any of my comments. Otherwise you would know that I lean toward Sony's side of the fence. You fail.
