I consider myself a hardcore gamer. I'll play any game. Doesn't matter what genre or what system. I just love video games. So you'd think I'd be all about casual games too, right? Well, I'm not agaisnt them, but I'm just not any good at them, so I don't play a lot of them. My girlfriend on the other hand, can lay some smack down on Tetris and Luxor. So does that make her a hardcore gamer?
The lines between the two "styles" of gaming have become very blurry over the last few years. It used to be one or the other, but the Wii has shown that this isn't the case anymore. Sure, you could call a lot of Wii games "casual", but there are people who play it just as much as I play my 360 or my PS3. Can you be a casual gamer when you log 20+ hours a week on your system? At what point do you become "hardcore"?
Growing up, for me, hardcore meant beating every game I played. Finding every item in RPG's. Having the best lap times in arcade racers. But as I've grown and my appreciation of video games in general has expanded, I've learned that I'm part of a dying breed. Purists, like myself, are truly in the minority, or at least will soon be. Do I think that this means we'll see an end to huge triple-A titles? No. Devs will still make the Halo's and the God of War's, but I don't think we'll see as many as we have in past years.
Oh well, I guess I need to brush up on my Diner Dash...
Catch you on the flip side.

Microsoft announced its financial results for Q3 of fiscal year 2026, including an update on its gaming Xbox business and more.
Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.
To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The charity event will be streamed live from Gamescom in August.

Thanks to the slip-up of an artist working on the title, we now have more evidence that a new Injustice game is in the works.
Well I used to define the hardcore as geeks, freaks and sheiks. A geek would know the cheat codes off his head and rattle of numbers and things, a freak would own it all and play as someone with "A D D" would and just hop from game to game, a sheik would be the kind of guy who never played the game before and own your face. Those are hardcore too me.
Does your girlfriend know the difference between 1080I and 1080P and set their system up to work with these figures? Does she know how many gig's fit on a BR disc vs the former HDDVD? Does she follow gaming politics and see WTF our fav lawyer Jackie T is up to these days? Does she follow release dates and foam at the mouth for the next GTA trailer? Some people are really good at "puzzle" or "Casual" games. Hardcore gamers at least try every genre. I suck really bad at guitar hero but I try it and am willing to play when I am at a buddies house and give it my best. Does your GF throw down the controller after losing too much to you in Soul Calibur? The Wii is a casual system with a few stand out games. I myself own a wii, ps3, 360, ds and a psp... I own a ton of games even crappy ones like lair and two worlds...
If I have not gone on enough about what "I" think defines a hardcore gamer let me say its those who spent half their childhood waiting in line for their shot to be king of the street fighter arcade for the day. To kill that sorry jerk off who kills everyone else and stays on. Then you get to be that jerk =D Those people who wait at the midnight release for 2 days are hardcore. I waited for 12 hours in the freezing cold to get my wii. I got the last one they had and the 150 or so sorry suckers behind me had to dissapoint their kids Christmas. Did I feel sympathy? Maybe a little but I had some Zelda to beat =P
I guess I just think the line between hardcore and not is still pretty defined. It has however changed over the years to something different then it used to be. It used to be that you play games or you dont. Now everyone plays games even if its just solitare at work or something. What makes you hardcore is that you post a blog about it on this site and your girl doesn't... The thing I love and hate about this site is that everyone here is hardcore. If they play WoW 12 hours a day or just troll for the "next best thing" they all love games with a passion even if its only on one console or whatever. They love it and are passionate about it. Passion for the industry is what makes you hardcore imho.
I would also like to say I am not trying to knock your girl. Mainly I was using how mine is as an example. Also for people who aren't using HD and all that please take no offense to my 1080 thing cause I know there is someone out there playing on a 13 inch 10 year old TV kicking my ass in COD4 even though I have a 56 inch 1080P. Thats hardcore.
I consider myself a hardcore gamer, i dont have the money to get all the systems but like i said i play my xbox 360 every day for hours and hours, i got a life, friends, a girlfriend, the usual teenager life but gaming is my second life, every day im on this website or look up news for the games i want to see if any news came out, i have literally been looking up every day for the past 40 days to find out when saints was coming out and enemy territory quake wars for the xbox 360 was coming out im glad to see they both have relase dates
