Jagex: Making the internet a safer place.

Jagex are all over cyber crime. So much so that their efforts have led to the arrest of a UK resident in connection with the theft of accounts in their hugely popular free-to-play MMO, RuneScape. Working alongside the cyber fuzz, they aim to bring down account phishing criminals one arrest at a time.

Fair play I say. While one arrest may not sound like much, it's a step in the right direction for publishers of online video games. There is literally nothing worse than investing your entire waking existence into an MMO only for some two-bit cyber crime lord to come along and nick your account.

According to a statement from the cyber fuzz (ok the PCeU) earlier today: "A 23 year-old man was arrested in Avon and Somerset on the morning of Tuesday 24th November by officers from Police Central e-Crime Unit, following an allegation that a number of RuneScape accounts had been hacked and misappropriated."

Seriously?! There are surely better things to do in Somerset in than hack people's RuneScape accounts? Surely a better use of your hacking skills would be to hack their bank account, or their PayPal account, or acquire their actual address and go round there to burgle them while they're out? Commit a real crime man from Avon and Somerset! What a ponce.

Anyway, credit to Jagex for taking action. And credit to the cyber fuzz just for existing. I wonder if they look anything like the precogs from Minority Report?

First RuneScape account phishers, tomorrow Minority Report. The future's bright, the future's precog.

An arrest over him stealing free MMO accounts? Really?

Don't the cops have better things to do?
Doesn't HE have better things to do??

Well MMO accounts or items from them can go for some seriously good cash on websites like ebay. not to mention he could be stealing them for their in game money to sell to other gamers for realy money. Aain a large businesss in this.
Unlike stealing from bank accounts this stuff rarely gets a notice from the police. The worst you normally suffer is an ip ban so most smart cyber criminals do hack MMO accounts and make thousands of pounds/dollers from it.

Absolutely. It's big business in the MMO world and seriously harms in-game economies. It's great that the UK police are starting to take this seriously because while it may not seem like a big deal, it is tantamout to fraud. If they can steal accounts then they would have access to other personal information I guess. It's about nipping it in the bud before they move on to more serious identity theft crimes.

But yeah @HolyOrangeCows, the dude really should get a life!
