Mini Q&A
Answers provided by Mattieu Bégin, Co-Founder and Game Director

Why do you make games?

At Clever-Plays, we make games because it's our way to give back. We have played so many amazing games since our childhood; taking, taking and taking from so many great developers over the years. Now, we feel it's our turn to entertain, to make gamers dream. We have so many stories to tell, and so many mechanics to explore, and we're ready to prove it.

Why should people play titles from Clever-Plays?

Our first game is called LEAP OF FATE. This game exemplifies what we are about: hardcore action, great controls, and a strong feeling of power and speed. Oh, and a stimulating world to explore, also. Leap of Fate is a 3D action rogue-like, and we like to say that it's the fastest rogue-like on PC. You play a mage who can shadow walk, allowing you to move lightning-fast though the battlefield. Through each game, you grow your magic in many possible ways, thanks to three skill trees and a plethora of equippable glyphs, which will help you blast your enemies to pieces. There are four characters to play, each being a mage with an intricate and mature backstory set in a twisted version of modern reality, and several alternate endings that you'll discover progressively. And I want to mention the game's setting

What element of game design do you hold above all others?

It's very hard to pinpoint one element that would be more important than the others. But since I have to pick one, I'll go with providing the player with a feeling of power, which I think is a big part of what makes action games fun, at least for me. This does not mean that the game must be easy or devoid of challenges, on the contrary, but I think that the character must control fluidly and his/her actions must have a strong and obvious impact on the surroundings. For some reason, many people instantly react to that feeling of power, and it makes the game feel more fun than it would otherwise have been. An excellent example is God of War, where everything about Kratos is design to let the player feel he is fury incarnate, from the character's voice, to the controller's rumble, to the over-the-top FX and animations. In Leap of Fate, this is definitely something we put a lot of efforts on. The characters feel fast, responsive and powerful, and that does not prevent the game from being very challenging.

Day 31 | Clever-Plays

I like how they want to give the player a feeling of power. Nothing is more rewarding, in games when it feels like you rule the world and nothing can stop you.

Now that I saw the trailer the game looks pretty cool. If it comes out on console I could see have a twin stick shooter type of controls.

The game looks pretty wicked, I'm intrigued. If that sense of empowerment (and challenge) is anywhere near God of War, awesome! Definitely liking what I'm reading so far

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit65d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing65d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9265d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
