Cuphead, an upcoming indie, run-and-gun platformer, made headlines last year during E3 2014 when Microsoft showcased a montage of forthcoming indie titles, including brief scenes of the game from Canadian developer, Studio MDHR. Back then, there wasn’t much information surrounding Cuphead aside from its classic animation aesthetic, and that was more than enough to capture and retain the attention of many.
Just recently, Cuphead was featured again during Microsoft’s E3 2015 showcase, but unfortunately, it was placed in between a handful of upcoming AAA titles and wasn’t entirely given the attention it deserved. The good news, though, is that this year at E3, it was available for hands-on play and it certainly turned quite a few cup-heads. *Ba dum tss!* Cuphead also managed to win an award from IGN as Best Xbox One Game at E3 2015.
Cuphead is the first game by Chad and Jared Moldenhauer, two brothers from Canada, operating as Studio MDHR (most likely an acronym of sorts for their last name, MolDenHaueR) and its development started back in 2010. When they founded Studio MDHR, it was just the two of them, but at this present time, they’ve evolved into having over fourteen people working with them. Cuphead has shown to be a fast-paced and hyperactive title that puts players in the shoes of this interesting new protagonist. As Cuphead, the player loses a bet with the devil and over the course of the game, must attempt to repay the debt. It’s a game based around continuous and beautifully designed boss fights and features branching pathways, a variety of weapons and power-ups. It’s been highlighted that the game will be difficult, but Cuphead will have infinite lives and will retain his weapons should he fall in battle.

As of date, there still isn’t much information surrounding Cuphead, but with the information available, it seems that a lot of people are very interested in the game. One of the newest informative updates is that Cuphead will feature a cooperative multiplayer mode where the second player will step into the shoes of Mugman, a similarly designed character who embodies the color blue, as Cuphead prefers red.
With the gameplay we’ve seen so far, there are several different and interesting bosses in Cuphead, ranging from a pirate captain to giant twin, boxing frogs to even a dragon. Each boss has its own location, fighting style and abilities and offer unique and varied challenges to overcome. Accessing the locations to fight the bosses as well as other places to visit in the game are accessed by an action-RPG styled world map. Cuphead looks to be a very simple, pick-up-and-play title that presents a great challenge and level of enjoyment, paired with an innovative and refreshing art style.
Its aesthetic and theme is inspired by classic 1930s-era animation from Fleischer Studios, classic Disney and notably, Ub Iwerks (Mickey Mouse) and Willard Bowsky (Popeye). It’s a refreshing thematic for a modern game and based on what we’ve seen so far, it works pretty harmoniously with the direction that Studio MDHR is going in. Not to mention that the art style itself started off as hand-drawn visuals and is a process that they plan to stick with going forward.

Day 25 | StudioMDHR

Microsoft announced its financial results for Q3 of fiscal year 2026, including an update on its gaming Xbox business and more.
Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.
To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The charity event will be streamed live from Gamescom in August.

Thanks to the slip-up of an artist working on the title, we now have more evidence that a new Injustice game is in the works.
2016 isn't too far off. Hope it's early 2016.
I think everyone knows about this game, and that's the way it should be. I mean c'mon have you seen this game in action!? It's amazing.
The art style is awesome, I love it. I hope the gameplay is there as well.
Im definitely getting this.
Love the art style, love that it's challenging and love that there is co-op, it's one of my most anticipated games.
