Preview: Keep Yourself A-RIVE

From Kyle Gaddo

RIVE is the latest in 2D side-scrolling platforming technology, as you intrepidly make your way through a series of mechanically-themed areas, pumping bullet after bullet into machined foes from your quadruped murder robot.

Taking elements from shoot-'em-ups (aka “shmups”; also not starring Clive Owen, Paul Giamatti, or Monica Bellucci) and traditional side-scrolling platformers, this action-adventure title sends you through area after area of danger and peril as you navigate a derelict starship in order to uncover a mysterious mystery. There might be more, but that's all the demo cares to divulge thus far and Two Tribes have been pretty tight-lipped about what sort of adventure they plan to give us.

Touted as a “metal wrecking, robot hacking shooter,” there isn't really anything out there exactly like RIVE, which is a-okay. Coupling smooth gameplay with frantic and furious action, Two Tribes' upcoming effort is, at its core, what we have always loved about video games—adventuring and taking down baddies.

The short demo takes you through the basics of the game, introducing the shmup section as you navigate through an asteroid field to your destination. Your mission is to destroy asteroids for points and not get crushed in the process. As approach your destination, you'll be met with actual resistance as seeking missiles try to make sure you don't make it to the ship alive.

After this section is over, you're introduced to the standard platforming elements, tried and true for decades, that RIVE so cunningly embraces with its twin stick shooter additives. Your omnidirectional death dealing is accompanied by a stock double jump ability and an interchanging special attack that, through the course of the demo, allows you to disable enemies with an EMP or fire homing missiles.

If that wasn't enough, you'll soon be grabbing a few hacks to help you along the way. The first will allow you a simple puzzle-solving ability of opening doors with their respective lock mechanism boxes, but then come in the little floating allies you need so dearly, with one agumenting your movement abilities and the other acting as a mobile first-aid kit. Not a bad menagerie and still more to come when the full game releases, with only the two partners

RIVE follows a fairly strict “formula” in being an action-platformer with puzzle elements. You'll use your razor-sharp wit to navigate through tunnels and use all your handy robot tricks to get from point A to point B. Furthermore, you will also find yourself craftily dodging and retaliating against vicious robot bosses with very specific weaknesses that place you in the very moment of danger for the sake of whittling away at their daunting life bars.

Though many things about RIVE are currently a mystery, one thing is for sure—it's got a solid foundation and shouldn't be overlooked by players looking for a challenge. Honestly, the most exciting thing about RIVE right now is its potential. Being a crafty marriage of shmup ideas with a platformer already brings a level of originality that few developers are taking on these days, but the real joy will be seeing other ways it turns its inspirations on their heads.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit69d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9268d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
