You have one mission; loot treasure. Heft those lovely sacks, idols and gems on board, because the Viking king demands it. Smash, stab and bash your enemies who dare defy you your right to pillage. You are a viking after all. You play as one of four classic archetypes in Slick Entertainment’s homage and entry into the co-op brawler, Viking Squad. Four vikings to crush you and your friends to crush your enemies in a randomly generated array of levels, save for boss encounters. Oh those vibrant and dangerous boss encounters.
Remember when you played Double Dragon (or Knights of the Round or Battletoads, or…) and it was just that much better with a friend. In fact it really was kind of a drag to play without your friends? Maybe I was just lousy and my pals were swell at those games. I didn’t get that all from the hours I inadvertently plugged away into Viking Squad. By hours I mean many. By inadvertently I mean I have no idea how or when I actually played that many hours but did, good gods I certainly did. Sort of like when I first played Castle Crashers, which Viking Squad unabashedly exhibits influence from while still maintaining its identity.

Remember when you played Golden Axe (or Streets of Rage, or Final Fight, or…) and it was sometimes a challenge to find placement on that Z axis? That fireball from your drake mount just sizzles past that baddie, only to open you up to a pummeling? The team at Slick Entertainment remembers that too. You and your viking pals “snap” to lanes of play that clearly displays when and where attacks are landing in a particular path. These lanes bring a new skill and tactic to gameplay. You know how to dodge, avoid and approach your foes, with an extra peppering of confidence. These lanes allow you to focus fire and get the hell out the way. It’s a unique and fun addition to the genre.
There are four warriors to choose from, each with familiar and satisfying playstyles. The sword and shield fighter, the dual hand-ax wielding berserker, the agile archer and hammer-smacking hammer maiden infuse Viking Squad with a classic favorite feel of gameplay. Gameplay you expect from a brawler. What was a favorite addition was the collecting of treasure between the zones. The treasure that satiates your viking lord and gives your character an opportunity to level up skills and gear needs to be carried and placed upon you viking ship in transition levels. While carrying the treasure you lose the ability to attack, though you can hurl your sack, jewels and idols at baddies, though at the risk of damaging them and potentially destroying them. Some treasure can even be used to activate secret levels and further unlocking items to be forged back in your viking base camp. You end up back at camp (at least in this preview version) by completing your mission and destroying the boss or dieing. In either case, any treasure you managed to acquire prior to your demise is tallied and you can spend that as you see fit. Though you do have to spend it before you re-embark. Which means eventually you will be sacrificing your treasure on hand to hop on board your pillage barge. No hoarding for you, young viking. Spend, spend like the wind.

In the introductory level you unleash a flashing green light from a large gem that later follows you (or leads you to) a monstrous boss that brings your Viking Squad lane use into question. In the preview version you face a kraken-esque boss who slaps your viking bottoms(s) around until you discover it’s timing and tactics. It’s quick, furious and fun. Every time I fought this boss I wanted just wail on it, chopping it to bits, only to burn through healing potions and restarting my assault again back in town. Even when I figured out its pattern, I wanted to smack it in its seafood face.
Slick Entertainment has summoned forth a lively entry to the classic beat em up genre with Viking Squad. They have added a few mindful improvements that keep players playing and controller hurling to a minimum. I had the distinct pleasure getting my brawl on with Viking Squad. It exacerbated an itch I always have with action games. The only remedy was more Viking Squad.

Day 21 | Slick Entertainment

Microsoft announced its financial results for Q3 of fiscal year 2026, including an update on its gaming Xbox business and more.
Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.
To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The charity event will be streamed live from Gamescom in August.

Thanks to the slip-up of an artist working on the title, we now have more evidence that a new Injustice game is in the works.
I like playing these games when i'm bored.
Looks like it will be fun. I wish it had a release date so I could find out more.
