The Power of Thought vs Flappy Bird

First off, before I get into the subject, I am not really sure where this post should go, but I know it's kind of an off-topic subject. it only contains one paragraph and a few sentences here and there about gaming, and it's mostly to get my main point across. Anyways for the moderators:- tell me if this is the right place for the blog subject, as I can't find any off-topic or general sections for blog posts. For the readers:- tell me your thoughts.

Flappy Bird. I don't get it. I don't get what's all the fuss about, I don't get what's so amazing about this game. People and critics admit that it's a silly game, but they say it's an addictive game. I don't see the "addictive" part, all I see is the "silly". Now a game like chaos rings, sword and sorcery Ep, fangz, or even the new marvel alliance game, could all be described as addictive, but not flappy bird, not at all. I played the game spent an hour on it, got a score of 12. I felt compelled to beat that score the next day, so I played again for another 30 min, then I got bored.

Personally I think flappy bird's success is a great example of the power of the media. See when all your media outlets are talking about any given entity, especially if they're praising it, you're bound to be curious, thus you go about trying to find out what it is they're talking about. In this case it's a silly game called flappy bird. If you are mentally weak, or just not a very knowledgable individual, (which is the state of most people in the world, very few people are knowledgeable, and fewer actually know how to use their knowledge to achieve their goals, or to use it in their daily interactions) you will give in to the hype of that certain entity that the media is praising. Now in this case it's meaningless. It's meaningless to give in to the hype of a game, if it can be actually defined as a game. But what happens when hat entity is a political candidate for the presidency? What happens when that entity is other countries with conflicting cultures and traditions and because of that, are being labeled as the "enemy" by the media because they prefer wearing head turbans/scarfs and not NBA starter caps. What happens........??

I have experienced the power of the media first hand. I am Egyptian, and was part of the original Egyptian revolution on the 25th of jan 2011, when Mubarak was ousted. I also took a "mild" part in the second revolution that happened 6 months ago on the 30th of July 2013, this time the Muslim brotherhood member president Morsi and his extremist religious regime where ousted. Throughout this turbulent time, the media machine was working on extra/high power mode. Now just so we are clear, I think the Muslim brotherhood are terrorists to the fullest, I've seen them kill and use weapons against unarmed civilians with my own eyes. I also know that Mubarak was the definition of corruption in Egypt. In both cases the media was very biased. You either find channels that paint the brotherhood as angels from god carrying out gods plans, or channels that paint them as lucifer's henchmen. This is also supported by false claims and false footage, very evident in channels such as aljazeera which was the go to hub for the Muslim brotherhood (MB). I said before that the MB are terrorists, but there are members within the MB that are against violence, and there are members that are just confused and believe anything the MB heads/chiefs say (brainwashed) due to these members being mentally weak. This is not a local problem too, this is a worldwide issue. Everywhere in the world news channels are very biased to one side of a story.

My point is, you should think about anything you hear or see. Think about it in a non emotional, non religious, non traditional way. Be very pragmatic when you think about what is being said. Even when it comes to gaming, the console wars for example, a lot of things being said within the console wars saga doesn't make any sense if you really think about from a logical, scientific point of view. Draw a table of pros and cons, split the sensible and the non-sensible in two categories, think logically about what you hear and what you see. Most of the time if you think about a lot of subjects out there for a few minutes you'll find out that logically it doesn't make sense. These subjects might be common conceptions within a community, theories and dogmas that the community just follows without asking why. Also, remember that when it comes to thoughts, there is no taboo, for example, a very common subject in all communities across the world is religion, most people don't really give it much thought, they just follow the word of god. A lot of communities consider thinking about the relevance of religion is taboo. Actually, if most people tell you it's taboo to think/argue about a certain subject, then that should be more reason and should give you more motivation to examine it with your thoughts, and ridicule it. Think about the logic behind religion, what the bible, Quran and Old Testament/Torah say (the 3 official words of god as most people would say). Do these words of god sound logical and systematic to you? Do you really think these are the words of god. How come god has 3 different "official" words? Think.

Apply these questions to all aspects of life, apply it to things you take for granted in your daily interactions. Think about everything and anything, if you are confused then ask. Ask everyone and anyone, a homeless street beggar can know something that a doctor wouldn't, a 12 year old might tell you something about chemistry that your office co-worker wouldn't know about. Still confused then search, search everywhere. Searching for information is so easy in this day and age, just as the internet can be used for Facebook posts about how sexy you look beside the pool, it can be used for knowledge. I once was looking for a new router to buy, so I searched the net for the newest routers, one thing lead to another and I spent about 5 hours that day getting to know all about the different a/b/g/n modules, how the connection actually works, what's the true meaning of hertz, what's a dual signal, how the internet as a whole came about. In 5 hrs I learned about Internet networking what I couldn't learn in an elective course about the internet during my university years. A lot of the times I am also able to gain valuable knowledge from gaming, movies and music. Think. Search. Ask . Then search some more. Don't believe, instead, ridicule. Don't be a follower. Don't be a flappy bird.

Well the game is gone now, so it and the people with the audacity to enjoy it won't trouble you anymore.

LoL. Well I feel bad now for the developer, though it's a ripoff...still, the guy tried to do something with his life which turned out to be successfull. I hope he continues to make games, seems like a pretty down to earth normal guy who just wants a peaceful life, respect for that.

Though my main point isn't the game at all, it's about thought and ridicule, about trying to understand why people say, and behave the way they do. I don't know it's just nowadays I see a lot of people following the media blindly, celebrity obsession is at an all time high this decade, so is brand name obsession. Half of the people I know who have iPhones, iPads, or any brand name tablet or touch phone, don't even need them for their daily lives, all they do with those devices is check out their friends on Facebook so they can gossip about their other friends on Facebook. These people only buy those touch devices cause it's considered a social status statement. They buy it cause it's "IN" right now, not cause of the benefit it provides as a piece of hardware tech.

This brings another point, the gamer community. The gaming community is a bit different, see the way I see it is that there are very few gamers out there that would buy a console or rig their own gaming pc just cause it's the "COOL" thing to do. Gamers buy a certain console/pc cause they wanna game, they buy it cause of the benefit they'll get out of it, which is why people should buy any machine or tech device. Actually i think it's why people should buy anything at all, with the exception of fashion and food/drink. So that's why I love the gaming community, I think us gamers are maybe a bit smarter than the rest of the world, and am talking real gamers, as in console/pc, gamers that play daily and experience all sorts of games. Tablets are also great for gaming too, don't get me wrong, I myself game a lot on tablet these days. But there are people that don't own consoles/gaming pc that just play a few minutes of angry bird/fruit ninja/ poker etc. these people game for passing time, not for the experience or love of the game.

I just don't know man, the world nowadays feels very freakin commercial. I feel like am very old, though am just 30, not that old. I just don't see groups gathering around at a friends place and setting up a fighting tournament on street fighter or a soccer tourney on FIFA/PES. this type of thing only happens in university dorms, and college student residences nowadays. Today if u wanna compete with ur friend, you go online to do it. When I was a kid we'd gather around at a friends, usually we were 10/12 people, we'd have a great time, and at the end we'd order some good old junk food, usually KFC, and we'd have to all chip in for the winners meal, you win the tourney you get a free meal lol. Good times man. I don't see that nowadays, I am sure it still happens, but not that much, not that much at all. The world is becoming lonelier by the minute LOL.

you wrote Console War Saga.. Be wary developer King might come after you for copyrights.

On topic : interesting subject as i for one cannot understand this sudden out of no where Flappy crap going on. Like you it feels fake and created out of nothing. There is no substance in this game at all. Even the whole "im pulling the app from the store" is just to get attention to the game.

Well it worked since here we are talking about it....

Lool, it seems like everyone is suing everyone for absolute nonsense these days, I wouldn't be surprised if they did lol.

Anyways very well said my fellow hardcore gamer, but see while we are talking about it, we are talking about it in a thoughtful way, trying to see how this "phenomena" is affecting society at large, and trying to draw conclusions about what's wrong with the world in a greater sense.

People like you, me, and a few others will think about stuff like that, try to ridicule and analyze. But others won't. Other people will either dismiss the subject by saying :- oh shit not flappy bird again, this is boring, I'll cal up my bros so we can have a few beers and maybe get lucky tonite. Or they will acknowledge it by saying :- hell yeah flappy birds the shit brah !!!!! ill have a beer to that !!!! But few people will think.

But let me tell you that in the gaming community I found a lot of people who do think in a dynamic way about the smallest and littlest details. Which is good, i think there is something about video games that makes you more active mentally than ur normal non gamer.

So here's to us gamers !!!!

I don't understand the animosity towards this game. Some might say that it's driving the video game industry towards a mindless pit, but what they fail to realize is that mobile gaming and console/pc gaming are two entirely different realms. To be honest, I don't even consider it as an ACTUAL game(Even its creator admitted that it's more of a minigame), but nevertheless it's a fun distraction and it gets the job perfectly done. Games like Flappy Bird or Candy Crush pose no threat to the industry since games like these have always existed but have never surpassed the reputation of "Actual" games. Their influence in the industry is negligible.

This is a threat to gaming dude. Wake up most game are all ruined with Microtransaction and that is all coming from this casual stuff on iphone.

Candy Crush dev has made over 1 billion dollars, Why do you think most dev are now focusing on casual and Microstransaction?

To give you an example : My mother in law was waiting for someone at the hospital after a long surgery, She was playing candy crush on her phone. She kept buying life ( 1 more turn ) i told her to wait and you get the free one , she said i dont have time to wait i want to play now. Well guess what .. she spent most likelly on that day alone $80,
You think a triple AAA dev don't look at that and wonder "why the f*** do i care for deep and complex experience and i can make a game like this in a day and make all that dough ??

They are ruining some solid franchise with this sh*t , Dead space 3 ? Forza 5 ? they pretty much announced that all game coming out will have Microtransaction is some shape and form. This is ruining gaming we are buying half complete game, the rest to be sold separately .
