Alpha Protocol: An Overlooked Gem

I had been reading about 'Alpha Protocol' for about 6-9 months before it was released in late May, i was originally intending to get it around october when it was due for release. However, had to hold back as it was delayed, if i remember correctly it was never confirmed why it was delayed at the time but i think we all knew why.

It was quite evident from the previews that the game was a half baked game but i was willing to give it a chance to redeem itself, so when May came round i was eager to get a hold of the game to make my own opinion after reading several reviews giving it at times 2 out of 10 i was cautious to say the least.

What i can say about this game is that it is no 'Mass Effect' while its dialogue system is considerably more advanced than Mass Effect's considering the choices are not dialogue but how your character approaches the conversation i.e. Suave, Aggressive, Casual etc. The shooting mechanics and overall polish are far from superior.

But beneath the flaws is a nice story and some great characterisation, i wont spoil anything for whoever reads this but i can easily say some of the consequences of your actions beat anything Mass Effect can throw at you.

Also for you achievement / trophy whores out there, i managed to rack up a 47% total trophy count through one playthrough without even trying, however i feel after looking at some more of the trophies / achievements due to the flaws in the combat they might take some time to achieve but feel free to disagree if you find them of ease.

Some tips for if you were to play Alpha Protocol:

- Points in Assault Rifles are a must, they are the most overpowered weapon in the game and as far as i have read, make the game mostly playable.

- Try to figure out your approach to a character before you hit the conversation as you have a limited time to choose your dialogue stance.

- Remember to read the profiles of each character to understand how you will gain reputation with them and how you will lose it.

Thank you for reading my first blogpost.

I like it. There's so much customization. I just use the smg's and it's a breeze once you get used to them. The assault rifles are tough without any points invested.

Doesn't seem like it's worth $60, but definitely on my radar for a price drop. Glad to hear that the game wasn't a total loss. I was really looking forward to it for awhile.

Definitely the best thing about the game is the way the conversations are handled. I like the fact that you can't take all day to try to figure out what to say, you have to make quick decisions.

I will pick it up when it gets a price drop for sure. Nice first blog post BTW. :)

I'm in the same boat as the author here I guess. This game was VERY much on my radar back when it was announced. And even after the delay I was anticipating it. Then those reviews start coming in and looks a bit disheartening. But still willing to give it a shot and form my own opinion. Afterall there have been plenty games in the past that others just didn't like or that received less than stellar reviews and I ended up enjoying very much.

Of course, like others above have mentioned, I don't think it's worth a $60 try. I'll be waiting till the price drops. Most likely till it gets down to like $30 and I'm in a bit of a game drought.

Glad to see some were anticipating it as much as I was and are still having fun with it at least.
