What's with all the bad reviews?

**This blog was inspired by many reviews of games that've come out recently, though reading the reviews of Killzone 3 got me started.

Call of Duty Black Ops is not really a good game. The campaign is decent and the multiplayer is more boring than MW2's, which is hacker-filled and annoying. Still, the game's better than MW2 even if multiplayer isn't as fun. However, what scores do you see for it? The most butchered version of the game on PS3 has an 88 average on Metacritic with the 360 right behind with an 87. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, though, probably a tie for the worst CoD game in the series with Call of Duty 3, has a 84 on both Ps3 and 360. Oh, but I'm not done! Call of Duty 4, arguably the best game in the series, has the same score on 360.

WHAT THE FU-

So let's get this straight for a moment: Call of Duty 4 is one of the most loved games of all time and it has a 94. It's sequel, which failed miserably, gets the same score. Black Ops, which is only slightly better than MW2, gets a worse score.

Well, that doesn't make any sense. However, the reviewers seemingly disregarded the campaign of MW2 and Black Ops as a whole, reviewing the boring multi in Black Ops and hacked MP in MW2 and giving the game great scores for mediocre games.

Today, there's been a ton of Killzone 3 reviews out, most of which are between 8.5 and 9.5. After reading a good bit of them, I realized two things. 1) They compare Killzone 3 to Call of Duty A LOT. WHY?? THEY'RE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT GAMES! That's like comparing Halo to Counter-Strike. You just don't do that! 2) They're placing a TON of criticism on the single-player, with a lot of the reviews having the single-player portion of the review slightly bigger than the multiplayer. What the hell? The same people didn't do that for Call of Duty, but what's the excuse? "Well, you buy Call of Duty for the multiplayer".

I don't! After MW2, I bought Black Ops for a better single-player, since Treyarch is seemingly better at that than multi. It just makes no sense. They're comparing two totally different games and giving the better a less fair review.

I'm just using those 2 games as an example, but there's been TONS upon TONS of just as biased reviews for the past years. Shellshock 2 was actually a good game, though not without it's flaws. But just like AvP, it was bashed down to hell for not being the next Call of Duty or Halo or this or that.

As a reviewer myself, it just annoys me so much to see how much bias these so-called "professionals" suck at doing their job. After reading all of the people's comments on many reviews, I can truly understand why people don't like many mainstream reviews.

Simply put:
THEY
FUCKING
SUCK

Although 8's aren't perse a bad review I will say that I have not seen such harsh reviews since FFXIII & Heavy Rain, till Killzone reviews today. The reviews have butchered it for the single-player, ultimately putting a dent in the score. Based on a lot of the reviews is read as well, it just doesn't seem like they touched the multiplayer by much. They basically told me everything I know already (has 8 maps) and didn't go too much into details in the multiplayer. So yes, most of the Killzone 3 reviews are ultimately based on the single-player. Unlike other FpS, they did not give Killzone 3 a pass for it.

I smell politics. The PS3 is absolutely spamming out exclusives this year, and sites are trying not to lean to far in the PS3's favor. Leaning too far scares off advertisement deals from people they're NOT currently "leaning" towards.

Where popular multiplat series, from super-rich advertisement-happy publishers, like Call of Duty get free passes on having short campaigns and decent to subpar stories, games like Killzone 3 are sent to the slaughter. COD gets away with having a "good" (If broken, unbalanced multiplayer is "good" as the ad space-selling review sites seemed to have felt) multiplayer as a game-saving feature.

The only thing COD is truly the gold standard of is marketing. And sadly, great games get trampled because of it.

clrlite5605d ago

That would explain why a lot of the major sites stuck with a safe score of 8.5

GodofSackboy5606d ago

Ok, cut it out, let's admit, an 8 is absolutely crap. Just crap.

Nate-Dog5606d ago

With the way reviewing has gone lately, especially with bigger sites yeah it's not great, but it's pathetic that an 8 out of 10 can be regarded as crap (I'm not ripping you, I mean everyone has this mentality now because pretty much every game these days is rated between 8 and 10, any lower and we're led to believe we might aswell chuck it in the fire), game reviewing has gone down the toilet the past few years really.

I am a little worried at people saying the SP is very short myself, but still, like the blog-writer said, these reviews are doing two things: comparing the game to CoD even though the KZ and CoD series are pretty different, and even though they're comparing it to CoD (of which the majority of reviews gave it a good score due to it's multiplayer), here KZ3 is being rated on it's single-player. I just can't understand it, but that's why I don't depend or really bother with reviews that much. If I'm looking forward to a game then I trust enough in my own opinion of what I've seen and heard through trailers, screenshots and information to know that even if the game is disliked by others, that I'll like it enough myself.

I'll buy an 8 game if I've been following it and the 8s are consistent. Hell, I'll buy a game that I've tried and liked, even if it gets worse scores.

stevenhiggster5605d ago (Edited 5605d ago )

I agree with active, if I've been following a game with interest, and I've played and liked a demo then I'll get whether or not reviews for it are below par. Like Haze, which I liked and Jericho which I also liked but both got bashed at review.
And in my opinion an 8 is not a bad score its just that 9's and 10's are handed out far too much. In fact nowadays I seem to find my self hating most of the games that are getting high scores across the board, ie any call of duty games!
Reviews nowadays do mostly suck.

COD is king of the hill of shooters. Hard to avoid mentioning them when reviewing a shooter, especially since it is mostly COD players that will be deciding if it is worth getting KZ3. Thus a review of a shooter that references the gold standard of shooter only makes sense.

The OP needs to take reviews less seriously. It is an opinion meant to inform. I personally found the KZ3 review lacking in specifics (like 3D performance, Move pros/cons), but I can't disagree with the score because I don't have KZ3.

I think the problem is that fans hype games (developers feed this with talk of polygons and using 100% power), scores are never up to fan standards, and so fans trash the reviewers. Repeat for next console exclusive.

I say that if someone is that big of a fan, they should not care about scores at all. Scores are for the people that need an opinion. Fans have their own, and that is all that should matter to them.

BrianG5606d ago

You put it well, completely agree.

I typically only read the final paragraph or final Ups and Downs in the reviews, don't want to ruin the game for myself if theres any spoilers, but wouldn't mind knowing if something is glaringly wrong with the game haha.

But I'll have my own opinion when it launches. Already playing the beta with Move and DS3, its amazing. Move is so accurate in KZ3. A much better experience so far than what I've had with MAG, which is good to with move.

If you want to read a credible review on Killzone 3, here it is. http://www.gamesradar.com/p...

He weighed the pros and cons, talked about every aspect of the game without spoiling anything and gave it a 9. Good review.

gman_2975606d ago (Edited 5606d ago )

I don't think he meant 8 as a bad score but that its just stupid for better games to get worse scores than the run of the mill shooter. I may be wrong though but that's how I interpreted it.

And after playing the Beta, I don't blame him. KZ3 is already amazing.

MW2>cod4 and black ops

black ops is very trashy game. Treyarch should be eliminated. So another company can make COD.

Ducky5605d ago (Edited 5605d ago )

... but what does that have to do with the discussion at hand? O.o

theonlylolking5605d ago

If you read the blog then you will know what I am replying to.

Ducky5605d ago (Edited 5605d ago )

^ I did. The point of the blog is that the CoD games fall into a generally more favorable bin with reviewers.
Saying one CoD game is better than another doesn't really contribute much when they're all still getting praised and other more deserving games aren't.

Meh, not like it really matters.

Gawdl3y5605d ago

How could you possibly say that MW2 is better than COD4? MW2 is absolute garbage, and Black Ops is in between the two. COD4 > BO > MW2.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing42d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9242d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit42d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing42d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9242d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
