Visual Novels and Western Industry

Visual novel is one of the types of video games that is extremely famous in the East. Why is it famous there you ask? It is because most of visual novels have great character and plot developments like KEY's games which include Clannad, Kanon, Air, and Little Busters which luckily got translated for Western gamers to enjoy and cry. There are more that are critically acclaimed in Japan and the problem is that there are Western gamers who would love to play them. The problem is...the publishers are not localizing the games since they are afraid of the controversy and if it won't sell well there, and this is what I am going to talk about in this blog post.

Two of the famous reasons why most of the high quality visual novels beside KEY's games are because of cultural differences and...erotic visuals. You have heard me, erotic visuals. Eastern gamers are not offended by those scenes but Western gamers will have a problem since many people criticized the use of sexuality in games. The most recent example is Quiet's appearance in the upcoming Kojima's game, Metal Gear Solid V. Most of the games are rated 18+ or for adults only as they warn that there would be sexual activities in the game. From some scenes of the heroine having her pantie shown until an erotic sex scene. If Quiet managed to get all of this controversy then I cannot imagine how would the developers and certain number of gamers would react to this. Katawa Shoujo, a Four Leaf Studios game, has made an option to disable adult's content if you would be offended so why not just add this small feature in the localized games to avoid the criticisms? Just don't censor everything that can be essential to romance forcibly which I will talk about soon.

If you don't mind both of the reasons, then sadly you are still out of luck. The Eastern publishers feel that it isn't worth the risk to localize some of the masterpieces for the Western gamers to experience which frustrates the potential customers who would buy them as soon as they get officially translated and arrive to their stores. Some fans would try to make a patch to translate a game but it wouldn't be official since there could be translation error and some bugs and glitches in the game itself, and it won't get any money for the developers since it would result in piracy if the patch released for PC visual novels, and that wouldn't be good for the original developers and publishers. Even if this won't be a problem, there is a possibility that the fan project would halt and nobody who doesn't understand Japanese would have the ability to try this particular game which would disappoint people.

If you think this is frustrating, no it isn't. If you have heard about If My Heart Had Wings and its...problematic launch in the West, then you know what I am going to talk about now. Publishers would censor all of the "romantic" scenes in the respective game and give it to the West uncompleted. If you think I am talking about censoring the erotic scenes only then you are wrong again. If My Heart Had Wings's publisher, MoeNovel, censored every single kiss, sexual joke...you heard me, sexual joke, and more that can be related to sexual activities which doesn't leave the satisfaction of completing a route in a romantic visual novel.

Enough of me talking about Eastern developers, now onto the Western developers. One risk that turned out to be worthwhile was Four Leaf Studios (4chan) game that is called Katawa Shoujo, and indeed it was a surprise in 2012 along with The Walking Dead. This game is what visual novel lovers in the West were asking for and they got it as they didn't get disappointed. The thing is not many developers are doing the same. If you checked some indie visual novels in Xbox Live, they aren't exactly "high quality" but at least some developers had the guts to make them. Some of the games were worth it but others were just frustrating and disappointing that you would think why did you buy that visual novel.

Now into the good stuff for next-gen visual novels. The consoles will have self-publishing feature for developers to take advantage of. Is it a start for making high quality visual novels in the West? Will the Eastern publishers localize their games thanks to this feature? Will PC visual novels like Katawa Shoujo finally come to the consoles? Those questions don't have answers yet but hopefully all of the answers will be yes. The problem is from the self-publishing feature is that there would be more bad quality games in the consoles' digital stores but some day, there would be some visual novels that would change how people think about this type of video games which would be a good thing for visual novel lovers.

Thank for reading since I felt that I wanted to address about this issue I have about visual novels not being a prominent type of a video game in the West, and the lack of interest from the Eastern publishers to release their games there which resulted for loyal fans to try patch the game into their respective languages which would have a possibility for their project to abandoned mid-way in the development of the patch, and we would never have a chance to try those games here. Hopefully the future of visual novels in Western regions would be bright and would happen in the era of the next generation.

I enjoyed your blog.

And I agree, we need more visual novel games in the west.

FogLight4523d ago (Edited 4523d ago )

Thank you for the comment!

There has been a number of interesting visual novels that are being in progress of being patched by fans but you could never know if it will succeed or not. It was great to see KEY visual novels to be translated, but I wish that others would be translated officially, not just being a fan project without knowing if it will be abandoned or not.

And thanks to self-publish feature, maybe there would be a bright future in next-gen consoles after all...at least I sincerely hope that's the case.

I am planning a trip Japan next year for Christmas and I must say their way of speaking and storytelling is a nice change of pace for me,very beautiful and poetic. Still got a year to go but would love to see more of these types of games make their way to the western shores. If not hopefully I can still play them in their original context.

Ahh... You are a lucky man, aren't you? I hope that you would enjoy there, and tell us which visual novels and Japanese games to look forward to in the West ;)

fsfsxii4523d ago (Edited 4523d ago )

Western media are hypocrites. Video games get tons of flack for a skimpy outfit, giant tits, etc..., but nobody talks about how TV shows does all that and no one speaks a word. Shows like Game of Thrones are almost considered porn. So is it okay for TV shows to do it and not Video games??

And i also forgot how the rest of western video games does killing, murder, anything illegal and thats considered OKAY. But if a japanese game shows a chick in a bikini, they flip their shit.

Nice blog, thanks, the best thing you could wake up on.
And i sometimes wanna learn japanese just to play some of those games that never get localized *cough* Yakuza 5 *cough* and the rest of Sega games.

FogLight4523d ago

Actually, you are right about Game of Thrones example, but it isn't only sexual activities, but it has incest too, and I have never seen a controversy about it while Kojima is suffering from Quiet's skimpy outfit...What a world we live in.

Just Yakuza 5 and Sega games? Man, there are a lot of games I would love to play if I can read Japanese/Kanji. Still, would love for Yakuza 5 to be localized :)

fsfsxii4523d ago (Edited 4523d ago )

Sega games are one of the game i WOULD play if i learned japanese.

I just googled Incest. O_o
Where is the world going to man if they air shows like this.

The critical success of Zero Escape: VLR and JAST releasing a english version of Steins;Gate, these are definitely steps in the right direction but I don't think they'll be the big push. I'm waiting, or rather hoping for, a big name VN to come out in the West on consoles and become a big deal. Outside of the novel part, The Walking Dead reminded me of a visual novel. How the gameplay was a very small factor, and how it was there mainly to help the story.

Also I think VN's will suffer as most of them are love stories. Even something like Fate/STay Night, Fate/UBW/Heavens Feel you could argue is just Saber/Rin/Sakura routes and most other VN's are just straight up Tomoyo route or Sachi route. I think the VN that takes off on the US will be one that avoids routes based on romance and favors routes based on different morals or means of resolution. I never read them, but I'm assuming something like Umineko or Higurashi would be what becomes big over here.

Also, 85%

FogLight4523d ago

Katawa Shoujo was also surprise for visual novels for western gamers though. It was made by western developers (Assuming 4 Leaf Studios aren't Japanese) and it has gotten good reviews and personally, I have enjoyed playing it. You are right about Zero Escape and Steins;Gate successes too but they are not that famous enough in the West (Besides the ones who watch anime since Steins;Gate has an anime adaptation). Maybe thanks to self-publish feature, we could see a special visual novel being made for the consoles.

Well, gamers besides anti-violent people would enjoy some scenes in Higurashi if that's you are talking about. There is something though, Romantic VNs are actually popular. Clannad was a major success and thanks to its anime counterpart, many people were looking for a way to play the visual novel, and then try out other KEY VNs like Air, and Kanon. If I am correct, Katawa Shoujo, which is a romantic (and erotic) VN, has gotten good reception of you took a look at Metacritic having a 8.9 score. But most probably dark visual novels like Higurashi would be popular...People do like dark stuff and this one is too dark.

RockmanII74523d ago

I don't want to take away from Katawa, but a large part of it's success stems from it being free. Also since KS was written in English first I'm pretty sure they're either American or European, and I'd lean toward the former.

The problem with all of what you wrote in the 2nd paragraph though is that romantic VN's ARE popular, but they're popular with the people who read VN's. To make VN's more mainstream is literally to get people who don't read VN's to start (IE Casual Console Gamers), and I don't think they would approach a cutesy love story as willingly as we would.

FogLight4523d ago

Alright, you are right in your second paragraph. If we are talking about console gamers in the west then love stories are out of question and they will just laugh at the title itself...sadly.

Maybe a next-gen port of Steins;Gate perhaps? or a new story for Higurashi lore? I don't know but we will see in next-gen.

Aksys are pushing for this. They recently released Sweet Fuse.

They are the only company keeping PS5 alive - you better hope they don’t die!

varora8h ago

Ironically, it's PlayStation that's saving xbox, they're the only ones buying the games.

Eaten84h ago

They should merge then, because Sony apparently can’t make games anymore.

Scissorman4h ago

yes, cause 18 million PS5s sold last year because of xbox's games... meanwhile xbox sold 2.5 million for the year...

Eaten83h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Well they certainly weren’t sold because of the non-existent Sony games…

Bro, why do you need to make alt-accounts to troll? Maybe if you play a PS5, you'll magically grow a pair.

Pretty surprising on revenue and content being down. Obviously hardware being down is expected, but you'd think that the GamePass price hike, CoD, and things such horizon 5 coming to PS5 would drive things up. No wonder MS is all-in on the multiplat strategy, don't really have choice at this point. There might be another GP price hike this year.

SimulationDaily8h ago

COD is likely the issue. It appears BO7 is doing significantly worse than BO6. Game Pass is apparently growing, so the problem isn't there.

varora8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Game Pass growing... that's not what I hear, I hear that it shed around 30% of it's Ultimate subscribers after the price hike as well people canceling other tiers. And you just reported services were down which would indicate the exact opposite.

SimulationDaily8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

@Varora: What you "hear" (from your uncle who works at Nintendo?) is irrelevant when the CFO of Microsoft says the opposite in the conference call.
Incidentally, "content and services" are down, not just services, which include Call of Duty. If you don't know how to interpret financials, don't try 😂

Edit: Oh wait... another troll account made 46 minutes ago. I really need to learn to check before engaging. 😂

varora7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

Well, certainly no one should question the honesty of a Microsoft executive...

But, I heard that between people downgrading and canceling it was as much as 30%.

And even though they raised the price of Game Pass Ultimate by 50% and an average increase across all tiers of 38% which of course grew subscribers so, you would think it should have made significantly more money, but you know who am I to argue its not simply CoD, it did massively under perform.

The good news is that Microsoft's consolidation of the industry really seems to be paying off for them, the industry and its former employees.

Wonder how the goalposts will be moved this time, it shifted from exclusives and console sales, to revenue, where now then.

Lightning774h ago

No goal post. It was down last January also. Amy Hood predicted this was gonna happen. You gave us and downs, that's simply how it works.

DivineHand1256h ago

There is no incentive to buy into a closed ecosystem with no exclusives. I wish they would just make windows lite or steam os bootable on the Xbox so long time fans who still own the console can get some enjoyment.

Lightning774h ago

Closed ecosystem? How's it closed?

__y2jb30m ago(Edited 29m ago)

All consoles are closed eco systems. This in itself is not a problem but a closed eco system without exclusives is pointless when there’s alternatives that have them.

derek6h ago

And Microsoft wants to release another super expensive console next gen? Bizzaro world economics over there. Phillip Bartholomew Spencer will be promoted on the strength of these loses. Lol

TriniOutsider5h ago

Their next console has to be released. I could only imagine how much R&D they've already put into their next platform.

derek4h ago

Sunk-cost fallacy in action.

Yes let’s release so we can lose even more money!

I really appreciate that almost every game has a demo now before release. I hope Silent Hill F will be next to port on Switch 2.

Silent hill F was ok, its story was a bit nonsensical, and at a lot of points it just throws a heap of enemies at you for what seems like padding, hopefully the DLC will be better
