Review of Activisions New Gaming Engine and COD

At the GDC 2013 event Activision revealed there brand new gaming engine and showed off how powerful and realistic it is.

This engine brings stunning graphics to a standard never seen before, now whilst we have only seen images from the GDC reveal they look amazingly realistic you really have to look close to realize they are actually animated images.

There is speculation on when and where this engine will be implemented, the question is whether it will be on the current consoles or the next gen consoles.

In my opinion it should be implemented in the next gen consoles but do not hold me to that as I may be wrong, the engine is that powerful and complex that I cannot see current consoles being able to handle it they seem to struggle with current engines in certain games, especially fast paced games

So what games could we expect the engine to be used in? Rumors say Call of Duty ghosts, well at the moment Infinity Ward cannot agree on what they are doing.

Infinity Wards' animation lead Zach Volker was very illusive, he stated that they would be upgrading key systems in the Quake 3 engine which they have revamped numerous times.

With regards to the common gamer it is obvious that the Quake 3 engine is flawed as it struggles with animation in fast paced games, it lags and simply struggles to cope with online game play this coupled with the lag, host migrations and very weird glitches that they seem unable to fix makes it unsuitable and inadequate for future Call of Duty games.

So what is Infinity Wards' excuse? Well their excuse is that they do not have the time or resources to construct a completely new engine, to me this seems like the most ridiculous of excuses, as one of the biggest gaming franchises in the world that makes
huge profits Infinity Ward should be able to employ a team solely to create a new dedicated gaming engine.

So even if their upcoming game does use the new Activision engine it seems that the game itself will still rely upon the old gaming engine so yes we would get better graphics but the game play and multiplayer problems will most likely still persist.

Now do not let this put you off before as I said above Infinity Ward cannot agree on what will be implemented in the new Call of Duty game.

This is because Mark Rubin the executive developer for Infinity Ward has said that there will be a new engine for the upcoming game, he stated that the next gen consoles are the perfect opportunity to implement a new gaming engine.

You are now probably confused and do not know what to make of this well here is my conclusion, I believe that activision themselves will use their new gaming engine on all next gen consoles so thats the PS4 and Xbox One.

Now Infinity Ward will most likely modify the Quake 3 engine on current consoles and implement a new engine on the next gen consoles, in my opinion that is because they do not belive current consoles could handle it

Until they confirm this I am guessing we will have to wait until the end of the E3 event on the 11th of june to the 13th of June.

Hopefully they will have decided their plan of action by then and we can know what to expect in the near future rather than speculating.

It's not a new engine, it's the modified Quake 3 engine. Straight from the developers.

If you need proof, just look at the lighting and the muddy textures, which were exactly what the other CoD games had.

Anonagrog4771d ago

You do know that a games engine is built up of a whole wealth of low and high level systems, right, most of which won't be dependent on the capabilities of the renderer? Developers will rarely come out with a new iterations of their engine by re-writing everything from scratch. Why do you think that's any different here?

It could be classed as a brand new re-written engine with lots of old code in it, or a really old engine with a mass of new code in it. The argument of "new" versus "modified" is pointless. Frostbite 3 isn't completely re-written from scratch, nor is Unreal 4, nor CryEngine 3. Why expect a whole wealth of systems to be re-written when it's completely unnecessary?

HammadTheBeast4771d ago

That's not the point here. It's been 7 years, I'd expect them to have completely re-written at least 80% of the code by now, other companies can pull it off, they should be able to.

Also, lets not forget that they make billions every year with minimal effort, they can take out a few million for a new engine.

Anonagrog4771d ago (Edited 4771d ago )

@Hammad,

I do agree with your last paragraph. If anyone could afford to do a complete re-write it would be one of Activision's leading studios. However, that really is a completely different point.

The point that so many people, yourself included, seem to be swinging is the "it's not a new engine..." put-down. I'm targeting that, and my response to it is it's not surprising, it is quite normal in software development, and it doesn't automatically mean the capabilities of a piece of software will suffer as a result. It's a redundant argument with no basis in fact.

Further to that, you also state that you'd "expect them to have completely re-written at least 80% of the code by now".

Firstly, code changes are going to happen, yes, but putting a quantitative figure on how much change you expect over a certain time period is completely absurd. Where did you get that figure from? What "other companies"? I can't believe there's a single developer out there that would generalize a figure like that. Code changes will be carried out as and when necessary. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!", "Don't re-invent the wheel!", etc, etc. If a game engine sub-system covers all the requirements of both the game being made, and of the content creators themselves, then why re-write. It will vary from dev to dev, engine to engine, and game to game. Going with your "80%" figure, that means what exactly when we go back to the "new" versus "modified" point you started with? When does a modified engine become a new engine? Is it after "80%" of the code has been re-written?

Frostbite 3 is actually built from the ground up; it wasn't a continuation from Frostbite 2.

If Dice/EA can do it, then IW/Activision can as well

Anonagrog4770d ago (Edited 4770d ago )

@threefootwang,

What?!

If you really want to believe that DICE would scrap every line of code for FB3, by all means, go ahead and stick with that. In reality they haven't.

http://www.frostbite.com/ab...

"The engine has been refined and tuned".

"It has also allowed the core team and its partner game teams to rapidly evolve the engine, adding new features and improved workflows without having to backtrack. The improvements are across the board, in every aspect of the engine".

Of course they will have built some new things from the "ground up". Not everything, though.

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

"EA, instead of buying an engine or developing another engine, they can just add people to the Frostbite project... Frostbite 3 grew out of where we were with the Frostbite 2 engine".

So, "If Dice/EA can do it,..." (modify and improve upon existing tech) "... then IW/Activision can as well", right?

threefootwang4770d ago (Edited 4770d ago )

Ahh my mistake, I read that in a random article, I didn't realize DICE had official information on their site, so thanks!

That being said, I'd say the difference between FB 2 & 3 is substantial enough to merit significant changes to how we visually enjoy and play the game. Personally, I think IW has either gotten incredibly lazy or Activision is forcing them to work with the Quake 3 engine.

... wat?

ZombieNinjaPanda4771d ago

You reviewed an unreleased engine, and an unreleased game that doesn't even have any sort of gameplay out yet? Really trying to win that contest, aren't you?

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing56d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9256d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit56d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing56d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9256d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
