I have 2.4 now what?

dylz|6452d ago |Blog Post|7|

As a 15 year old kid with nothing better to do I have been waiting for the long awaited 1.4 firmware update for the ps3. But is it just me or has 2.4 made me even anxious for the new features it included. lets take alook at the feature list :-
In-Game XMB

* In-Game XMB displays everything that's in the XMB, some functions (playing a video, slideshow, voice chat, etc.) require the you to exit the In Game XMB and use the regular XMB
* Custom Soundtracks for supported games (released games must be patched to support the feature)
* Music player controls for Custom Soundtracks
* Full access to the Friend List/Inbox
* Access to the Accessory Settings
* Ability to launch into a different game while playing a game
* Runs as smooth as the regular XMB
* The old PS button menu (Controller Settings, Shut Off System/Controller) can be accessed by holding the PS button for a couple of seconds instead of tapping the button.

Trophies

* 4 Trophy types: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum
* Bronze trophies are the easiest to get, Silver is harder to get, Gold is the hardest, Platinum is only awarded when you have obtained all the other trophies in a game
* Each user will have a PSN "Profile" that keeps track of your trophies
* Each trophy type has a different value that goes towards your Profile's gamer "level" (Bronze adds less points than Silver, Silver adds less points than Gold, Platinum adds a significant amount of points towards reaching the next gamer level)
* All games will have restrictions on how many trophies they can offer (small scale games will offer less trophies than large scale games) and some games will have restrictions on what type of trophies they can offer (no Platinum Trophies in small scale games)
* Trophies can be viewed in the XMB
* Trophies can be locked by the developer just like Secret Achievements
* Trophies can be compared to friends trophies via the XMB
* Games will need to be patched to support Trophies (SSHD will have a patch hours after 2.4 is released)
* Games will not award Trophies retroactively based on saved data
* First party games confirmed to include Trophy support:
* BUZZ! Quiz TV
* LittleBigPlanet
* MotorStorm Pacific Rift
* NBA 09 - PS3
* PAIN
* PixelJunk Eden
* Resistance 2
* SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
* Warhawk

Misc.

* Google Search added to XMB
* Music player controls added to XMB
* Date & Clock added to XMB
I can't use trophys or custom soundtracks as none of the games I own have patched it in. Nither can I use the in game XMB to message my friends as the servers have all crashed and it will proably take longer then ussual which I didn't even think was possible.  Oh well at least I can look at the time.

Signed.
When I saw the news this morning (around 7 am here) I installed it and wanted to try out the new features in MGS4. Then it hit me like a brick: We need a patch first.
Now, I really appreciate that we finally have come one big leap closer to full fledged in-game XMB, but Sony should have enforced compatibility with the new features two months or so ago, so that the patches would already be available.
From the features I can actually use, I think the clock in the upper right corner was the most needed and useful. I always wondered why they didn't have one in FW 1.00.

that it was stupid to not have a clock, but everyone for some reason or another, thought that the idea was stupid. Oh well, I got what I wanted. Nice to have if I don't have my cell on me.

In my opinion PSN will not be complete until the voice chat functions match XBL. That means being able to private chat anywhere anytime no matter what your doing or your friends.

Then I'll be happy and I'll seriously question why I'm paying $1 a week for XBL...

The biggest problem is, the games people care about receiving trophy support (read: MGS, GTA) are neither confirmed, nor do we have any idea if/when these patches will be released, and how exactly it works as far as existing saves goes (since it is not retroactive). Essentially, in-game XMB is quite good, but soundtracks/trophies is a big "?" right now. Until developers starts rolling out patches -- and with SSHD being the only first day supporter, I cannot fathom how long this could take.

the in game xmb does NOT run as smooth as the regular xmb and the gamercards are ridiculously slow

mattkelly19916452d ago

alright, OF COURSE it doesn't run as smooth while its in game. Just think for a second about that one. Second, The servers are pretty backed up, the first day the new store was up it was slow to. Its all on server speed. Just give it a second.
