Thank you Sony.

We have all been there toying with the idea to just give up on gaming and live a normal life they say. But sometimes you have to wonder to yourself if there is such a thing as a normal life without games.

I had this episode about 3 months back after a long run with Microsoft's console that is the Xbox 360.I was playing as regular as every day and starting to get very bored with the online aspect that dominates console gaming now. Nightly sessions of online mammoths such as Call of Duty and Halo were getting tedious. I think I was starting to hit a wall with gaming so to speak as most things I was playing on the Xbox were not giving me enjoyment that gaming as a hobby is supposed to. At that moment in time I was wanting a killer single player experience which I love by the way which I think this whole blog piece I'm writing about boils down to.

Gaming fatigue or burnout I think they might call it was setting in as paying for a Xbox Live sub was getting tedious as in all fairness I was paying it to play online and felt a little conned at services behind a pay-wall and paying to play online were as PlayStation users could enjoy the Instant game collection and various discounts which I did know about but didn't really read into seeing as my friends are the typical Xbox is the only console worth having attitude and just following suit, as you do sometimes.

Then the announcement of the Xbox One.Everything I thought Microsoft were not going to do, they were. Although now the dust has settled and they are not going to do everything they said it still left a bitter taste in the mouth, especially the price for myself.

Then Sony announced the PlayStation 4 and there intentions, safe to say this sat better with me as a gamer and this made me ditch the Xbox 360 for a PlayStation 3. It felt risky at the time as I was settled but bored at the same time of the whole Xbox way of life in regards to gaming.

After a few hours of searching Google and N4G. I purchased a PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Plus sub and set myself away with the PlayStation 3 way of life and was happy to find games for free in a sense and services not stuck behind a pay-wall. As well as starting games such as Uncharted and God of War, games that showed me there was new ideas to be had in gaming and developers showing the single player experience still mattered.

While I'm getting adjusted to all things PlayStation a friend purchases The Last Of Us and has no time to play it so he loans me the game for a week. Now dont get me wrong I had seen the review scores and hype but put at that just Hype. I didn't check any game-play videos or read any reviews and just started it.

It was safe to say the faith in single player being catered for lovingly was more or less restored as the story telling mixed with solid game-play was once again found thanks to Naughty Dogs efforts I think as the game actually made me enjoy the hobby that is gaming again along with the fact Sony are about the gaming experience and not just catering to online and many of there own games are Single player centered which I love.

I truly think Microsoft need some new franchises and concentrate on game-play and new ideas to do well Next gen as Sony I think in my honest opinion are doing this already and feel I should have jumped on the PlayStation 3 way of gaming earlier much earlier.

Although I do still admire what what Microsoft have done for online gaming its just that it seems they concentrate on the online gaming side of games rather than catering for both party's as there is still a fair few of us that love a good quality single player experience and with this, there's a feeling of burnout for myself and many others I imagine as growing up and playing on classics such as The Ocarina of Time and Shenmue and Final Fantasy and various other single player orientated games truly nailed what a single player experience should be about.

So now gaming fatigue or burnout whichever you choose to call it is no longer an issue now.

So thank you Sony.

Good blog although it seems like you got bored halfway-through while writing :D
Sony definately deserves praise for the efforts they make in gaming.
I still think that they, on par with Nintendo, are the most passionate game companies out there who really want to offer value to their customers. Microsoft on the other hand is your typical american company like EA or Activision which primarily have your $$$ in mind, so I have absolutely no sympathy for them.

iamnsuperman4575d ago (Edited 4575d ago )

I don't think it is that. It is just Sony and Nintendo are more tactful in their approach. Microsoft, EA.... Just do no have likeable figure heads. They really struggle in this area. It may seem that Microsoft.... Care more about money than the non American companies but that isn't true. Just Sony and Nintendo have a different tactic and way of going about it.

ZodTheRipper4575d ago (Edited 4575d ago )

Then why did Microsoft abandon the X360 after 3-4 years while Sony supports it's console until today?

Why does Microsoft invest in timed exclusives (which don't contribute to gaming in any way but are only marketing) while Sony finances a lot of studios to develop real exclusives?
(Remember Mass Effect? Same with Titanfall now, they lure customers into buying the console within it's first years and after that, they rely on timed DLC like the ones for CoD or Skyrim)

Why is XBL a total ripoff when directly compared to PS+?
Why are a lot of features on the X1 behind a paywall while they are free on PS4?

I'm really trying to understand why there are people out there defending Microsoft and their tactics but points like these make it incomprehensible for me.

iamnsuperman4575d ago (Edited 4575d ago )

@zod18

Microsoft didn't drop support for the 360 they just played it safe while they tried a different venture which I thought was a bad move on their part. I give praise for Sony being the only company who pumped out new ips which all gamers moan about being a lack of which people seem to over look. Sony were forced into such a risky move as the PS3 was lagging behind. It could have easily failed but it was good it worked. I give my up most respect to Sony for this risk move

I just commented on the fact you think it is just the American companies who have the $$$ in mind and not the consumer interest:

"Microsoft on the other hand is your typical american company like EA or Activision which primarily have your $$$ in mind".

This is wrong as all companies make decisions based on profit potential and how much they can take from the consumers without being seen as cheap. What I said was Sony (and in a some ways Nintendo) are more tactful in their approach to this

I would agree that MS really needs better mouth pieces for their company. But, I will say that it's probably because they were riding high on the sales of this generation and didn't feel that they really needed to sell their new ideas. Hubris? Ignorance? I don't know. Also, I would just say that I don't think that MS has been fully committed to the industry. Sure, they spent billions to get in. But, they really just kind of have one foot in. It doesn't seem that they are interested in creating games as much as creating new services that gamers "need". Their consoles are a means to which they can deploy these "integral" services and generate revenue. (which is what the main function of a company should be). This is their tactic, as opposed to Sony and Nintendo...who seem to use games as the means to services.

In Japan, companies don't believe in paying extra to get exclusive games. Not wanting to be looked down upon in Japan, Sony reversed the process by buying up good studios and having exclusive titles under the Sony umbrella.

MS, being American, have no problems shoving money at publishers to get timed exclusives and full exclusives.

It's more of a difference in business ethics than it is Sony not competing with MS in bidding wars.

Congratulations on giving the PS3 a fair shot. If more X360 gamers put their loyalties to XBox aside and gave PS3 a try, they'd be amazed at what Sony's machine has to offer. Try a few of these games--you won't be disappointed.

1. 3d dot game heroes -- if you like the original zelda on nes, you HAVE to check this one out and vey reasonably priced used at Gamestop.
2. Guacamelee -- great metroidvania game with loads of style & drop-in/out couch co-op.
3. Killzone 3 -- great single-player, online, and 2-player couch co-op.
4. Ratchet & Clank Tools of Destruction or A Crack in Time -- excellent all-around platformers that are challenging and fun to play and suitableto play in front of kids.
5. Sly Cooper The Collection or Thieves in Time. Very under-appreciated games. Suitable for entire family, but can be very challenging. Don't be fooled into thinking these are kids' games.
6. Uncharted games, especially Uncharted 2!
7. Mod-Nation Racers. It takes the best of Mario Kart and adds in extremely robust character, kart, and track creation tools. Load times can be long, but well worth the price.
8. Little Big Planet 2 - if you like creation-type games, this one has it in spades. Platforming can get frustratingly tough at some points, but the ability to jump onto other users' created worlds is awesome and play 4 player multi-player local or onlne is awesome.
9. InFamous 2. SPECTACULAR game and very under-appreciated. The first game is very good, but 2 improves graphics and gameplay, the missions offer more variety, and the mission creator works well. What's not to like about a game that lets you choose whether to be good or bad, and has entirely different outcomes for each choice?!

List could be much better, for someone who was gaming on a 360 for years there are other titles far more important to catch up on PS3's exclusives.
Just to name a few:
- Journey (+ Flower eventually)
- Demon's Souls (Yes, it's better than Dark Souls)
- Ni No Kuni (lovely game)
- Metal Gear Solid: 4 (with TLOU my favourite game of this generation)
- God Of War 3 (doesn't need any explanation)
- Wipeout HD Fury (in my opinion really underrated, it's like a Mario Kart for adults :D)

Just my two cents.

jgrangervikings14575d ago

Thanks for the reply. It comes down to the gamer's tastes in games. I'm a big fan of retro games, so that's where my opinions tend to come from. Journey was good, but over-rated; still, to a person new to PS3, it's worth checking out. Flower is very good, but I have problems with motion sickness, so I can play it for 10-15 minute stretches. Wipeout is one that I wanted to like, but never got into it. I think I've added it and deleted it from my PS3 and Vita at least 3 times on each; when I run out of space, that's the first to go. Metal Gear Solid is another game I wanted to enjoy, but never could get into it; it is gorgeous to look at and is very stylish (and I forgot it was an exclusive), so it probably should have made my list, but it--just like Grand Turismo 5--are gathering dust in the corner. Since the blog writer mentioned God of War as being one of the series he's enjoying already, I didn't add it to my list. Ni No Kuni is one I haven't played, so even though it's gotten great reviews, I don't feel I can rightly recommend it. Demon's Souls is too frustratingly hard for me; if you like games that make you want to smash your controller against the wall and pee on the plastic remains, have at it. I choose to keep my sanity intact, my controller working, and my carpet free from pee stains.

Mircosoft WANTS you to play online more than Sony. They focus heavily on the online aspects of their games to get more people resubscribing to XBL Gold. Single player/story mode ends up suffering a lot this gen because of this way of thinking, that's why MS and COD go hand-in-hand. Just like MS the CoD games want you invested in their online community so they can sell you their DLC maps and add-ons.

Either way, if you do anything too often you'll eventually get bored of it. PS3 gaming is just that refreshing new thing. I'm definitely a Sony gamer first an foremost but MS have their own interesting titles too. I think you got bored because they're holding all their titles off for the X One release, leaving the 360 deprived of any new exclusives. I still welcome you to the Sony side though, the more the merrier! :)

Check out Dragon's Crown too, though I'm sure all those PS+ games will probably be keeping you busy for a while to come.

SweetIvy4575d ago

Well, now that you have a PS3, do yourself a favor and play: Resistance 3 with a pal, Little Big Planet, Ratchet and Clank a Crack in Time, Sly Cooper Thieves in time, Journey, Flower, Heavy Rain, both Infamous games.
It's all PS3 exclusives that are unique, just out of the top of my head, I'm certainly missing some more.

To this day, I cannot think about someone calling themselves a gamer, a true gamer, and not having a PS3 (along with an Xbox 360 mind you, there are unique franchises not to miss in there too).

Take care and have fun, a PLUS subscription will keep you busy for some time ;)! (and find new gaming-friends, lol).

jgrangervikings14575d ago

Yes, I didn't mention Heavy Rain but should have. My best friend couldn't get into it, but my wife and I did, and we both really enjoyed it. If you're up for something totally different, new and unique, try The Unfinished Swan. I love the visuals and how things can completely come to life with a few well-placed paint blotches. Supposedly PS3 has a good collection of JRPGs, too, but since that's not my thing, I'm not sure what to suggest. For the Vita, everyone who I personally know in my town who owns a Vita (that's 5 whopping people) ALL have recommended Persona Golden, so there you go. PS Plus is great for Vita, so I'm enjoying most all of those games, too. BTW, is Resistance 3 better than Resistance 2? The first was very good, the second was ok. Is the 3rd worth my time?

SweetIvy4574d ago

Resistance 3 features a co-op campaign and playing with a buddy is awesome. I can't tell the difference with Resistance 2 because I didn't play the campaign, but as soon as I read about the co-op in the third I jumped on board, it's a solid experience.
I also liked the multiplayer a lot, more focused than in Resistance 2 although less epic. I enjoyed the characters skills and the crazy weapons, no idea how many people could still play it though, at this point.

I'm not much into JRPG either, tbh, have never played a Final Fantasy O_o'...

The Unfinished Swan is on my list of games to play. I feel I'm a bit "behind" with the new gen coming and I'm playing a lot of games I had set apart (no game left behind, lol)! A lot of PSN are in the list as well :).
Thanks for the suggestion :).

Heavy Rain is quite an experience. I still shiver at thinking about cutting my finger... sure, it's not like the read thing (GULP!), but that's close enough for me :)!!! I look forward to Beyond!
