The Identity of N4G

I've been a part of News4Gamers, a.k.a N4G, since Aug. 17, 2007. That means a long time; not the longest but long enough. I've been here for the Open Zone and the original fanboy trolls that no longer post here.

When you've been here long enough, or possibly lurk here long enough without joining, you'll see a common statement made these days. "Screw this site, it's filled with Sony fanboys" or "N4Sony" or "If you don't believe this is a Sony fanboy site, just take a look at the forums *links to forums* look at how many Playstation thread posts and topics there are in comparison to Xbox or Nintendo."

Today, I'm going to explain something very basic about N4G and the internet in general.

N4G is not a ____ fanboy site at all. Those of use who've been here during the '06 '07 years of Xbox 360 and PS3 saw the rampant Xbox fanboys shouting out "Haha, Grillstation", "Delaystation", "PS3 has no games" etc. Why is it not called an Xbox fanboy site then?

The truth is, N4G is a site with loud gamers, as is the internet at large. Short of a site actively promoting the fact that it is fansite for a specific company, no website is a _____ fanboy site, least of all N4G.

I've seen people on NeoGaf complain about N4G in a similar way to how people on N4G complain about NeoGaf. Both slinging ____ fanboy insults at each other. I've seen comments on this site calling it an Xbox fanboy site because clear Xbox fanboys make obvious fanboy comments and get away with it and have 6 or 7 bubbles. The same comments are made about Sony fanboys, normally flung at me. Lol.

This is a gamer site. Filled with very vocal people. There are fanboys of all kinds here. The mods can't afford to be fanboys of any side else they can't be effective mods. The site owners are most certainly fanboys, but of money not of consoles.

You can't use an arbitrary number like forum posts to claim that N4G is a Sony fanboy site because some other arbitrary parameters can be drummed up to say it's an Xbox or Nintendo fanboy site.

Contrary to what you might think, the mods don't just allow positive news for one company to pass through and only negative news for another. It's not hard to look at the info of any story, see who approved it, and then see "Appoved by Community" on the right hand side. Any time a mod approves something, look in the approvals and you'll see a name with 10 votes beside it. That's a story the mods approved, otherwise the community put it through.

Likewise, a failed story doesn't get failed just because it's good news for Xbox. If you want that kind of news to go through, stop complaining about it and do your work to be able to approve the stories to come through. But if they're garbage stories from people like MisterXMedia, don't expect them to go through simply because it strokes your fanboy ego.

Gamers are a loud, vocal bunch of people. It's a characteristic that has developed over time and is a result of a highly competitive industry, and the need to constantly defend ourselves from attacks from the general media and the government, as well as the stereotypes that still linger on today.

If you pay attention enough, you will see all 3 sides engage in a circular blame game about this site.

I mean, today I saw a known Xbox fanboy say on the article talking about Sony's NPD victory "Congratulations Sony, PS4 is a great console" and that's it. He was hammered with disagrees. Why? Because he's a known Xbox fanboy that's why. So even though he said something positive about the PS4 and Sony, with absolutely no hidden agenda behind what he said, he was hammered with disagrees because of who he is, not what he said.

N4G is just a typical gaming website on the internet. It isn't a Sony fansite, it isn't run by Sony fanboys, it's just a gaming news aggregate with loud gamers. Whether you want to believe it or not, the Xbox fanboys are just as loud as the Sony fanboys. And we don't really need to hear a victim cry about how you have 1 bubble but this one Sony fanboy you know has 8. Bubbles don't matter. It's a broken system that has never been a good idea from the get go.

Open your eyes and understand. The fanboys are all over this site and are from all sides. N4G doesn't really have any allegiances. People see only what they want to see. And when they think the site is treating them badly, they see ____ fanboys everywhere even though it's pretty equal on all sides.

Chrono4514d ago

I agree, the fanboys ruined it. They report anything.

thorstein4514d ago

I'm reporting this. ;-P

But honestly, (and I have been here since 29 Aug 2007), the fanboyism can be detrimental. I know that many of the people who frequent the comments section here are positive towards SONY. And while the site itself is not pro SONY, the clientele makes it seem that way.

I am certainly a fan of SONY's gaming. This does not mean I don't own a Windows 7 (64bit) PC. Nor does it mean I want to see the demise of a (division of a) company that employs so many.

But, I have seen moderators that do take their favorite console too seriously. It happened on Gamefaqs. I earned a lifetime ban for digging at some mod's girlfriend for being an Xbot Troll.

Her signature was "I'd Die for Bill Gates" and would consistently troll all PS threads over there. Usually, she wouldn't even post anything on topic. She was not banned for profanity or anything else that was slung our way. So, I can totally understand the idea that a site can be considered "fanboyish." But Dragon is right, usually it is the users, not the owners that project this.

I'm a member since feb 2008, and I remember how it was. it was more lively though. I honestly think the comment zone and open were a good system. it allowed for reasonable discussions and wild attacks if you wanted a good laugh a tab away.

if some People wonder what happened for the shift in fanboyism, it mostly happened towards the end of 2008 through mid 2009. with the release of Gears of War 2 and Resistance 2. It was a minefield back then. I just the classy members that left the website over the years, those that had good discussions on the website and forums.

MysticStrummer4512d ago

I remember the anti Sony N4G. Over time the MS supporters lost ammo while PS supporters gained it, and now we have the current state. Funny how that works.

ravinash4510d ago

Yes, I remember that.
There was even a point where they tried splitting the comment section in two so you could make civil comments in one part and then slag people off in the other....happy days.

But yes, it was mostly Xbox fans saying how bad the PS3 was with all the arguements listed above.

rhcpfan4514d ago (Edited 4514d ago )

I didn't join here until 2011 so I have no idea how it was back then, but it was obvious from my time here that the community of this site was heavily biased towards Sony. I actually haven't seen anything quite like it. You'd get bombarded with disagrees if you said anything remotely negative towards Sony. So I disagree with your "fanboys are everywhere" argument for this site.

My main console of last gen was the 360 which I personally thought was the spiritual successor of the PS2. As for this generation, my main console is the PS4 and the only flaw I have with it is the lack of media support which probably be updated this year anyway. Either way, Sony are clearly more in touch with their userbase, which can't be said for Microsoft.

One thing is for sure though, the bubble system and agree/disagree system has to go.

DragonKnight4514d ago (Edited 4514d ago )

Go to my comment section and look for my comments in the article about the rumour of Sony attempting to acquire Titanfall.

If you think this site is biased towards Sony, check out my disagrees for criticizing Titanfall.

The bias on this site exists, but it's fickle and not so based in consoles the way people think.

rhcpfan4514d ago (Edited 4514d ago )

Maybe because you're wrong? I tried the beta on PC and it's definitely not a re-skinned Call of Duty. It's a very solid game.

DragonKnight4514d ago

Right or wrong isn't the point though. If this were a biased Sony fanboy site, I could say whatever the hell I wanted against an Xbox One game and never be met with that kind of defense for the game. People are acting like I've insulted their baby in that thread. Going by the logic that this is a site heavily biased in favour of Sony, it should stand to reason that my agrees would still outnumber my disagrees at the least, and I'd have many other people saying the same thing as I am, with bubble votes galore at the most.

rhcpfan4514d ago

And yet, you still got 22 agrees for a comment like that. Try this experiment, make a new troll account and on the next Uncharted article, write "Uncharted is just a re-skinned Gears of War with parkour". I'd be shocked if you got more than two agrees.

Emilio_Estevez4514d ago

How about we don't try that......

rhcpfan4514d ago

Obviously we shouldn't, but you get the picture.

Nineball21124514d ago

"Try this experiment, make a new troll account."

Umm... yeah. I'd suggest NOT doing that.

DragonKnight4514d ago (Edited 4514d ago )

Agrees and Disagrees are irrelevant (though I realize I used them as an example in my argument, I should say they are less relevant). People disagree just because they don't like you. I personally know someone who followed around a specific user (who's no longer here) just so they could disagree and debubble them regardless of what they said.

The comments are the real indication in the end. If this was a Sony fanboy site, I could get away with saying anything negative against an Xbox game and be joined by others in defense of what I said, but I'm not. Why? Because it's not about this site being a Sony fanboy site because it's not. It's about people who are vocal and expressive, whether controversial or not.

The whole agree/disagree system bothers me. Not so much that it's there, just that it's used in lieu of people actually making responses.

Generally once you get past the first few comments(which generally devolve into some fan boy nonsense but often start with some fan boy comment), no one responds anymore. This is really true of both sides of the fence though, and certainly not specific to one platform preference. There are many reasonable people that post further down in the comment sections that don't have a single reply to them, or if they do, the discussions quickly stop as people move on to the next news story. Threads very rarely go on for days, or even hours, and in this case, the bubble system may play a factor in that. If you come in several hours after the story has moved onto the 2nd page, which doesn't take long with much of the low-brow articles that do get approved, it's hardly worth replying. N4G is apparently doing away with it though, so we'll see.

Someone suggested a while back using up-voting, which would move more interesting discussions towards the top. I thought it a good idea, but wonder if it would actually work in practice, since the readership here does seem to favor Sony overall. It could mean people like Septic(who ironically got marked for trolling above, first time I've seen that) who is one of the more intelligent posters, and an Xbox fan, could easily get moved down the lists in favor of those trying to discredit the actual topic at hand.

Otherwise, I I do agree with Dragon's overall message. The site itself isn't a Sony haven. It never really was in the past. The readership has certainly changed over the last 7 years or so, and the Sony crowd is certainly more vocal now. With Septic's saying it's a Sony hive, I think that again just comes down to the residents of the site.

Great blog DragonKnight

The problem is this sites favouritism changes based on who is doing things right towards gamers.

Microsoft has been slowly decreasing over the years since Kinect but when the Xbox One was revealed it showed people how low Microsoft had gotten, until the point it was no longer ignorable.

Nintendo latley have huge problems with the Wii U, the 3DS might be ok but the console isn't and this is why you are getting so many "Doom" articles. If they are making stupid decisions then what do you expect. Iwata with his staments makes him look stupid most of the time and show that it's his mindset which is bringing the company down.

On the other hand Sony have been doing things right latley compared to what they were like back in 2006, it's massive improvment.....what are we supposed to do, ignore that, of course we can't. They took what happened to them hard and changed straight away while Microsoft despite making it look like they are "for the gamers" are obviously doing that to lure fans back in and Nintendo don't seem to want to because they stuck in the past with their companies tradition. Sony out of the 3 on on top at the moment and when things change then this site will also change to reflect that.

I get called a fanboy a lot, a lot of people do who aren't....all we are on here are gamers who aren't blind and can see what company is doing the best for the gaming community. At the minute Sony seem to be the people who are doing that so of course users posts and comments are going to seem fanboyish but what do you expect. I'm not saying there isn't obvious fanboys on this site and I'm not saying Sony are perfect but you have to stop grouping peoople together.

I mean sure when Microsoft says something posstive, of course theres still going to be a bit of negativity because you know what Microsoft are like, you don't just change over night so obviously you have to keep an open mind, especially with all that PR talk "for the gamers" crap from Phil Spencer lately. All I see BECAUSE of Microsoft's history (a gamer learning from past mistakes) is him trying to get a bigger audience for the Xbox One so it starts selling more units and in my opinion once they get enough they could end up reverting back to what they did with the Xbox 360 after Kinect.

At the end of the day this site isn't a Sony site, it's just a site where people can obviously see that at the PRESENT TIME, Sony are doing things better then the other 2 companies to benefit us as gamers.

@rhcpfan, a the risk of derailing the comments here: the current comment system's days are numbered as we move ever closer to the Big Update.

And for the blog itself, it's true...I've been on N4G (originally "just a member") since 2007 when N4G was a "360 site". :P

I've been told I'm every kind of fanboy/girl under the sun (often in such rapid succession I got whiplash)

I've been asked to "stop letting ____ fanboys join N4G until the numbers are even" (can't make that poop up, folks!)

...and I've had developers talk openly about the passion of N4G members. Because whatever the era, N4G members are not lacking for passion. Or opinions. :)

Happy Valentine's Day, fanboys! <3

"...and I've had developers talk openly about the passion of N4G members. Because whatever the era, N4G members are not lacking for passion. Or opinions. :)"

My entire blog summed up in a single sentence.

thorstein4514d ago

Whatever you guys do with the comments section PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT implement Facebook (etc) login.

That ruins so many sites because just random people can add whenever they feel like it without any consequences! I love the comment section here. You are responsible for exactly what you say. You get sanctioned if you don't follow the rules.

You are responsible for your own identity and maintaining that. Trolls lose their bubbles quickly. I wish it was easier to get bubbles.

But, do not DO NOT DO NOT, ruin N4G with Facebook integration.

As for agrees/ disagrees, I could care less either way. Perhaps just an agree button would be fine.

thorstein4514d ago

I used to belong to Space.com as a member (like here.) And I frequented the site daily (like I do here.) It was amazing. Tons of science articles coupled with a comments section filled with knowledgeable people whose passion was astronomy and the cosmos.

You could ask questions and get wonderful answers. And then, lo, Space.com added Facebook integration. And now, when a scientific study is posted, the comments are filled with the biggest morons claiming all sorts of bizarro claims about science that have been rejected for centuries.

Couple that with the religious nutjobs that post about the end of the world coming on an article about Ganymede. It is baffling.

It now appears as though Space.com has completely turned off the comments section because it was so ridiculous. But if you see the articles on facebook, the comments are insane!!!

Don't ruin it!!!

Cat4513d ago

Always happy to deliver good news: We will not be using any external login such as FaceBook for comments. :) There will not be bubbles.

newflesh4513d ago

I actually think N4G should allow facebook login , because even more people may offer their opinions. And the site will get more popular. The bigger the better

rainslacker4511d ago

@new

Facebook integration for a dedicated site is the worst thing ever. Facebook comments are a step above YouTube, and that's not saying much.

Go to any gaming related Facebook page and read the comments there. I know we have trolls here, but do you really want the kinds of comments you see on Facebook here in addition to that.

For the most part, N4G's readership is gamers. It's a big site and has a lot of knowledgeable people if one is willing to look. I enjoy the banter that goes on here. I enjoy getting to know regular posters and getting a feel for how others see things overall. Having some random schmuck come in with a comment that has nothing to do with the topic, riling people up for giggles on Facebook so they can sit back and laugh, just isn't a good thing for this site.

So thanks Cat for the good news.:)

thorstein4511d ago

@new

Are you sure about that? Do you really want people with no interest in our passion coming here and telling you that you are going to hell because you play video games?

Do you really want some jerk off of facebook sounding off about how game cause violence? Or call out our hobby and make fun of what we do here?

That is what happens on those other sites. Like I said, Space.com turned off comments.. go look for yourself. Then look at their FB page and the insanity that is posted there. Understand that all those comments were once seen on the space.com website.

I can agree. I joined a bit later. But within the first week of posting honest, non-trolling opinions about Xbox 360 I was down to 2 bubbles. It wasn't until the bubble reset that I was able to even really have a "rational" (if that's possible) discussion. I also think that, just like anything else, people are emboldened by the perception of being on the "winning" team. So when Sony started getting their swagger back, in the last 2-3 years of the last generation, Sony fans became more vocal. Before that, though, they would get squashed by the vocal Xbox fans. Add to that, there are some people that are just using the comments section to truly be trolls. They don't believe anything that they say and they enjoy pissing people off. But, that is the nature of the internet.

HonestDragon4512d ago

I've only been a member since late October back in 2011, but I still really like N4G. It's my go to site for news. I share news from here all the time with my friends and coworkers. It's also (in my opinion) the best site to have an outlet for.

It's why I started writing blogs and reviews on here. I wanted to share my experiences and opinions like I always do with my friends and coworkers. Although, it has been a long time since I reviewed something. I should get back on that. =)

As for the topic at hand, I don't see N4G as a "Sony fanboy site" or any *insert platform name here* fanboy site. Granted, there are fanboys everywhere. You can go to Twitter, Youtube, NeoGaf, Giant Bomb, IGN, GameSpot, GameTrailers, etc and see a fair amount of fanyboys. N4G is not immune to this. People say what they will, when they will. It can't be helped.

P.S. Developers talk about N4G? That's pretty awesome!

Cat4511d ago (Edited 4511d ago )

It's not an isolated event, but the conversation I'm thinking of is when I spoke with Evan Wells at E3, as he was very frank about the passion of N4G members and how he appreciates that. I think they have a soft spot for N4G b/c when the Uncharted 2 was unveiled at Gamescom the news of their awards broke here. http://n4g.com/news/382165/...

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio56d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing56d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9256d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit56d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing56d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9256d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Report: Injustice 3 in Development at NetherRealm Studios

Thanks to the slip-up of an artist working on the title, we now have more evidence that a new Injustice game is in the works.
