What Genre Of Games Are Your Achilles Heel

I was just watching a Rev3Games Casual Friday video that asked the question: What games do you suck at? It got me thinking about that question myself and the answer for me was obvious.

The genre of games I completely suck at are pretty much anything that's first person based, but mostly first person shooters. It's odd because I can play some games that allow for a toggling of first person to third person (i.e. Skyrim) and do many actions pretty well, and I can play Borderlands 2 with better success than a military based shooter, but for the life of me I can't do well playing most first person shooters. Part of the reason is that I personally find the first person view to be highly limiting and it doesn't add any immersion for me. Another reason is that my introduction to FPS games were the originals like Wolfenstein, and Doom (good games that I enjoy), Duke Nukem 3D (I like it) and then nothing until Medal of Honor 1 and 2 for the PS1.

Those games belonged to a friend of mine who didn't want to play anything but those games and so it really turned me off of the genre early on. What's odd also though is that I enjoy being a sniper in games that I can be. I can't say I'm excellent at the role, but I'm decent enough. I guess I don't mind shooters if I can take my time.

I'm also not so great at racing games, especially games like Gran Turismo. Doesn't help that I get bored of them pretty quickly.

Games that I'm not good at but enjoy would probably be fighters. I like super moves and that's been the sole reason I've bought fighters before despite being trounced in them easily (save for Soul Calibur, I seem to be pretty decent with Cervantes) and yet still enjoyed playing them.

Genres that I'm good at are RPGs, I'm fairly decent with Action games (God of War, Dynasty Warriors, DMC), great at puzzle games, for some reason I'm pretty good with third person shooters (Last of Us for the win), and I'm good with Metroidvania's and Platformers too. My favourite by far though are stealth games. If I can play stealth in a game, that's how I will play it for the whole game until I can't.

I haven't been able to figure out why I'm no good at shooters and I don't seem to get any better no matter what games I try. Guess it's just not in the cards for me, which is a shame because I don't want to not enjoy a game or genre, but it happens.

What's your Achilles Heel genre? Something you stay away from no matter what and probably could never enjoy?

I honestly can't think of any genres I "suck at" but if I had to pick one. Sports games, I can't stand most of them and that's probably one reason why I'm pretty crap at playing them, or at least the ones I've bothered playing in the past.

DragonKnight4644d ago

Oh I forgot about sports games. I don't play them at all though so I guess it doesn't matter. I don't know why someone would enjoy playing what is literally the same game every year but with a different roster.

zerocrossing4644d ago (Edited 4644d ago )

You got man, I'm still astonished at how well they sell every year.

Pintheshadows4644d ago (Edited 4644d ago )

It is due to sports fans being obsessed. In England people who like football REALLY like football. They want kits and stadia and squads to be bang up to date. Which is funny as FIFA still can't get that right. The transfers were not correct despite the fact the transfer window closed a month ago.

The only people worse than gaming fanboys in my experience are people that support a team so vehemently they will say anything to prove their point.

In answer to the blog if I had to pick it would be multiplayer RTS. I love the genre but whether it is Total War or Starcraft I tend to suck. The exception being Total Annihilation.

I'm fine against AI but I just can't deal with other players as they don't play at the leisurely pace I do. It also applies to Company of Heroes.

Bimkoblerutso4643d ago

I have always found it funny how socially acceptable it is to get hopelessly obsessive over sports, and yet gamers STILL have to put up with negative stigma's for pretty much the same behavior...just towards video games instead of sports.

And then what's REALLY funny is that sports games magically do not fall under the same stigmas.

At my work, people will literally talk about Madden 25 ALL day...and that is not an exaggeration. They talk about the game the whole ****ing day, every day. "Deep penetration" this and "tight end" that. All day...for close to eight hours.

But when I try to geek out with a friend of mine in the office over, say, FFXIV, I get made fun of by the same people that were JUST talking about Arian Foster's strength stats.

I feel like I may be off-topic a bit here...

Pintheshadows4643d ago

I've had that Bimko. Try talking about a game in some of the offices i've worked in that isn't FIFA or COD then you get mocked or told that the games are ****.

DragonKnight4643d ago

@Bimkoblerutso: If you want them to stop then just tell them how queer "deep penetration" and "tight ends" sounds and they'll stop. Unless they're into that kind of thing (nothing wrong with that of course) and then just ask if they're all having the same discussion.

But it is true. There's fanboyism in every hobby, but gaming receives all the stigma.

Sports are my favorite genre. This generation was the worst of all time for the genre because of the lockdown on licenses. 2004 is probably where it peaked with lots of competition making innovative features. The absence of NFL 2k, NHL 2k, Ea's MVP baseball, and others have stunted growth. Madden is a broken mess spoon fed to college drunks that don't care what they play.

I don't handle FPS games well so I stick to 3rd person. I played Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim in 3rd person. I only zoomed in to pick up items.

DragonKnight4644d ago

I played Skyrim mostly third person to except when Stealthing as it was easier to know when to strike with a dagger in first person. I just find first person very limiting games don't represent the perspective as well as it is in reality, which is no fault of the game it's just the way it is.

Pillsbury14644d ago

I suck at fighting games and racing so I stay away from them. Fps and action are where I am the most adept.

Donnieboi4642d ago

I suck at fighting games too. I cant be bothered to get into the scientific details of 2d fighting games (like frame data, etc). But 3f one's are okay.

Also, I suck at RTS genre games. Other than that, i'm REALLY good at stealth/hunting, racing, action, RPG, and most other genre's

Fairchild Channel F4644d ago

Racers for me. Mostly due to me finding them utterly boring. I'm just not willing to put the time in. But ya, Racers.

DEATHxTHExKIDx4644d ago

racing and sports just boring to me. Unless its Mario Kart.

Bimkoblerutso4643d ago (Edited 4643d ago )

I can't seem to get good at RTS's. I like watching the action too much. You have to constantly be micro managing this and that all the time, and I end up failing because I want to watch my armies demolish towns.

DragonKnight4643d ago

I'm guilty of the same thing myself.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio48d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing48d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9248d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit48d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing48d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9247d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
