Bravo Microsoft

Today, in a move many will describe colourfully but I will simply state as "returning to their senses", Microsoft reversed the stipulation of mandatory Kinect connection for the basic functioning of the Xbox One.

Yes, that's right, it is no longer necessary to have the Kinect 2 camera connected to the Xbox One in order for the console to work.

In my opinion, we now have a true "Console War" since Microsoft decided to do this. Although there are still some differences between the Xbox One and the PS4 for people to use to choose sides, for the most part the two consoles are almost two sides of the same coin. This will now become a battle of games more than anything else, as it should be.

This news doesn't mean that Microsoft will have a Kinectless SKU for $100 cheaper, so don't get your hopes up there. MS don't want a fragmented audience. All this means is that you can play your Xbox One without ever having the Kinect camera hooked up at all. Gone are the fears of PRISM and NSA spying.

The only thing I really have to say about this is that it took them long enough. Microsoft have had to learn the hard way that first impressions count for a lot, and now they are working hard to improve their image and it shows. There will always be arguments about specs and services and all that other hooplah, but today is a day to celebrate a good move that was made using that rarest of abilities known as common sense.

The skeptic in me still wants to see what Microsoft will try to pull in the future, but today isn't that day. For now I think we should all look at this as a win for gamers, because it's been a combination of our voices (that some would say are the minority), and the pre-order numbers, and the mainstream audience not buying into what the Xbox One was trying to sell that have forced Microsoft to perform continuous reversals on their policies. It's time to see what will happen next for both the Xbox One and the PS4 in this competition.

To you Microsoft, and to you Xbox One fans, I say congratulations. Today is a great day for you all.

NewMonday4715d ago

a cheaper no-Kinect bundle is inevitable now, will be waiting for it, and it should be $350 because a tie with the PS4 price is just not enough to really make a big turnaround.

Fireseed4715d ago

Dear god I hope not, having the Kinect come with every system is the Xbox's main distinguishing factor from Playstation, and I'm fairly sure it will never happen because of the fear of fragmenting it's install base.

NewMonday4714d ago

this is the only way they can compete on price, unless they want to take a massive hit

Christopher4714d ago (Edited 4714d ago )

This is also the only way I would ever buy and Xbox One. I have absolutely zero desire to talk to my TV or wave my hands/arms around to manipulate my game or other console features. I also don't want to pay for a device that I will never use.

If Microsoft got rid of

- forced Kinect hardware cost
- requiring XBL subscription to use 3rd party online apps and similar services

I'd buy one. Likely even day 1.

NewMonday4714d ago (Edited 4714d ago )

CBOAT @NeoGaf syes no Kinect-free SKU, but I'm sure it will come in the future, PS4 is enough for me next year

after that a WiiU when the big hitters should be out

in 2016 MS should have used the time to prove their commitment to 1st party games, and they need to deliver big time, Sony faced the same challenge with the PS3 facing doom, but inside a time span of 1 year delivered

Killzone 2 (FPS)
Uncharted 2 (TPS, action/adventure)
GOW3 (hack and slash)
Infamous1 (sanbox)
Heavy Rain (adventure)

this is how Sony started to win back gamers, and the only way MS can do it.

DragonKnight4715d ago

@newmonday: It's not going to happen. That would actually be a terrible move for Microsoft to make. I'm sure it's not a stretch to say that MS have shown a lack of confidence for their product in relation to many of the reversals, but a Kinectless bundle would cause developers to start losing confidence in Microsoft and would further weaken any "vision" Microsoft had for the Xbox One.

I think that, in terms of hardware, this is the last reversal or revision we'll see coming from Microsoft. At least for a long time. They've included headsets, they've removed Kinect requirement, there really isn't much left, hardware wise, for them to do. Maybe the only thing would be a controller that DOESN'T require AA batteries, but that's a minor nuisance that only the worst of the worst trolls would ever focus/harp on.

BillytheBarbarian4715d ago (Edited 4715d ago )

It makes perfect sense for ms to have a $350. The original Kinect sold for $150. Simple math. It's the only way they could possibly compete with the ps4. It will probably come with a tiny HDD too just to get it down to $300.

Otherwise, xbo is dead on arrival.

If the AA batteries are all you can come up with, join the rest of the world and get the recharger.

DragonKnight4714d ago

@Billy: No it doesn't. Including Kinect in every box does two things that MS needs. 1) It distinguishes the Xbox One from the PS4. 2) It ensures that there won't be a fragmented userbase of the Kinect and can give developers assurance that if they make a Kinect game, it can be played by everyone.

Also, just because the original Kinect cost $150 doesn't mean the Kinect 2 does or would.

"If the AA batteries are all you can come up with, join the rest of the world and get the recharger."

Or I could get the PS4 and skip the battery requirement altogether. I already mentioned that batteries are essentially a non-issue so I fail to see your reasoning on focusing on that.

Guerrilla4714d ago

Why does everything always mean "console xy is dead", "lost the console war", "will smash the other console"? These machines aren't even close to being out and a shitload of stuff will change, shift, happen in the next 1-2 years. Any ultimate prediction on either side is just plain retarded.

Further I don't understand why anyone would want one console to fail? I'll get them both and want there to be a lot of close competition so both have to deliver as many games as they can. Without an X360 and Wii there wouldn't have been nearly as many awesome ps3 exclusives. So every gamer should basically hope for strong competition. It's already sad enough that the wii u can't gain a lot of ground :/

BillytheBarbarian4714d ago (Edited 4714d ago )

Kinect isn't useful enough to consider it the thing that distinguishes itself from the PS4. I'd say it's more about the game exclusives. God of war, Uncharted, and Killzone versus Fable, Halo and Gears of War. Kinect will always be that thing that you play dancing games with. It's a gimmick and MS is finally realizing that the majority of Halo players don't even look at Kinect seriously.

No halo on xbo is like the Saturn with no Sonic. Saturn died pretty quick.

The question is, can Xbox sell without a playable halo title? 360 fell back on Halo 2's popularity until fall of 2007. That's nearly 2 years. I don't think they can do that this Gen if they don't allow BC. It could be another 180 to keep the fan base happy until halo 5 comes along.
It may be late but MS is making a lot of changes to the xbo. We really won't know until it's in your living room.

It will be a huge loss for Microsoft to sell a kinectless xbox one due to no one will buy a kinect peripheral and it will fragment it's audience. Nevertheless at least now the xbox one looks more competitive and I am glad that xbox owners and fans pretty much gamers in general said no and told Microsoft to go kick rocks.

maniacmayhem4715d ago

This blog reeks of sony fanboyism and bia....

Oh wait...I for one never had a problem with the Kinect being hooked in to work. I always looked at it like the Wii sensor bar. I also hope that MS doesn't sell a separate sku that doesn't have a Kinect. To me that is the one huge thing that separates it from the PS4.

MS has already absorbed the cost of the headset maybe they can suck up a tad more for the whole package. I won't complain about it being 500 because you are getting a lot but 450 would be a whole lot better.

Anyways I am still on the fence on both PS4 and Xbox One. I say we all go for the WiiU, it's cheaper than both systems and it has free online!

;)

DragonKnight4715d ago

The Wii U's tablet is incredibly uncomfortable in my opinion. It's the shape of the back of it that I have a problem with. I can't see myself gaming on that at all no matter what kind of games are on it. Call me crazy but, the main controller option for the console matters to me as it's what I'm going to be using for years. If I don't feel comfortable with it, my experience will be soured.

DragonKnight4714d ago

@Billy: Troll comments? Really? Ok then.

EXVirtual4715d ago

I'm a Nintendo fan but the Wii U is in serious trouble. I'll get it when Nintendo steps up.

s45gr324714d ago

I am not sure very few wii u games which are all third party at the moment since Nintendo games lack online gaming. It may be cheaper than its competition ; however, is pretty barebones as far as games, marketing, online gaming, etc... I say build a PC or get a PS4 ( crossing fingers for Sony to bring back free online gaming for all games not just free to play games).

GodGinrai4714d ago

I dont normally agree with EXvirtual (I hate his avatar for a start) but I agree on his stance on nintendo. I would like to buy a wiiU but I wouldnt have anything to play on...yet

I dont care for 3rd party support on wiiu( I know I should for Nintendo's sake)as I know i will be buying it really for zelda, mario, F zero etc..

PS are great for PS games. same as nintendo in that respect. and you cant play sony or nintendo games on PC.

iliimaster4715d ago

they are smart in a way to include it because never in my wildest dreams do i ever think about getting a kinnect i see it as a gimmick and interface control nothing else especially one that makes it a whole 100$ more but they have been flipping around like a fish outta water for awhile now and its great for us but i still can't forget what they tried to actually do.... no doubt there will now be a kinnectless xbox one for sale

Fireseed4715d ago

2013 Xbox One Never Forget.

urwifeminder4715d ago

Meh I will be getting the Kinect version pre order was put on a few days after E3.

Welcome2Die4715d ago

First impressions are extremely important, and Microsoft already pissed enough people off to the point where nobody wants to buy their console. Sony on the other hand did a great job at capitalizing on this grave mistake that Microsoft made with the DRM. This is damage control, it will be damage control until launch, and then its going to be a battle of the games. Either way what they are doing now is trying to get the Xboned as close as they can to PS3 status, Im sure they changed some minds but it did cost them their "vision" we will no longer know what Microsoft meant by "The future of gaming". Maybe having the kinect always on was something MS was planning on using for something. If they did lower the price to 350 on a kinectless bundle then they will be losing alot of money, and Im pretty sure people will be buying it without the kinect anyway so that will split the userbase from core to casual and devs will have to deal with that too. Personally I think the kinect is a waste of time.

s45gr324714d ago

I don't agree nor disagree but in my opinion, I see this as a victory for gamers and it proves that our voices are being heard. In a lot of ways I am glad that gamers screwed Microsoft vision it was terrible. Whether Kinect is used or not is up to Microsoft and game developers. Microsoft still has an ace in the hole which is live tv lol I meant the illumini room. The one that uses kinect and transforms your living room into a gaming world.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio71d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing71d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9271d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit71d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing71d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9271d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
