Console Gamer meets Cloud Gaming

It's been claimed to be a revolution in the gaming industry so naturally I couldn't resist trying out Onlive to see if it really does live up these big claims.

Onlive just recently launched in the UK and are offering a nice introductory order of one game for £1. The process was surprisingly simple, I created an account, downloaded the app and then before I know it, I was drawn into the world of Onlive.

The user interface was nice and friendly and my first port of call was the arena to check out what everyone is up to. This is probably one of the best features and that's purely because I can sit there and watch whatever game I want and really get a feel of a game - unless they quit and then of course I'll have to find someone else to stalk.

I can see that it isn't much different from just watching a few clips on Youtube, but you're diving straight in. It's a great experience and you get a great sense of what the game is like.

So next on my list was the marketplace. There were some games that had free trials which was pleasant so I started off with Assassins Creed Brotherhood. A couple of seconds later, I was playing Assassins Creed and it was just a bit of a 'wow' moment. Wow in the sense that it only took a couple of seconds and I was straight in.

Now Onlive is really a mix bag for me because there were two main scenarios when I was playing; scenario one is noticeable blurriness and input lag and scenario two, nice crisp visuals and smooth gaming. It quite often switched between one or the other.

So that is only a small snippet of what I experienced with Onlive. Do I believe it is revolutionary? Not yet, but it has so much potential to be something so revolutionary. If they nail those visuals and improve latency, I can see it as being so fantastic.

Have you experienced Onlive? Maybe you have the microconsole? It'd be great to hear from others about their Onlive experience, especially those on the other side of the Atlantic who have had it longer than us Brits.

Hey, I have the micro console but i use a Mouse and Keyboard to play it because if not you will get wrecked if you play home front with a analog stick lol.

Ok back to the Topic, yes Onlive is Revolutionary, but i don't see it going in many places that have slow internet speeds and internet caps thats one big downside of Onlive. For me My graphics has never dropped and always stayed looking good but thats because im playing wired and with my Verizon Fios 50mbs :)

I love the interface and the cheap games they have to offer. Their play pack offers a lot of games for just $10 which is a steal. Anyone who's been on the edge give it a try, It's a free app just go their official site :)

I should state for the record that I am on a 8mb Sky Connection that usually averages around 5mb.

I completely agree. The PlayBack bundle is, for me, the best value for money with OnLive.

I hear the microconsole is actually very good in reducing input lag and blurriness because it is designed up for streaming.

Also as an additional note, for those in the UK, if you pre-order Saints Row 3, you get the microconsole for free. I am not aware if this offer is also available in the US.

I was amazed at how quick it was to set up as well. I thought I had to deal with mega downloads, but before I knew it, I was jumping into games. I feel like some gamers haven't given Onlive a good go and are shooting it down even without trying it.

Yeah, 5mbs per second is their minimal speed requirement so I'm guessing graphics drop when speed does.

Yeah more gamers should give it a shot they have nothing to lose, they don't even have to buy a game they can just try a trial and see for themselves.

If it had interesting exclusives I might try it out, but right now I can play about the same games on my console and pc.

The 'spy on someone else playing the game' is also a neat feature. Although a bit creepy at the same time.

It'd be awesome to just take a quick glimpse of what your friends were playing.

Check out the friends list! I like using it to see if a friend is playing mp (usually Homefront).

If you head to your onlve setting's there is a section like xbl profile view were you can disable spectating or make it friends only can view. I use onlive on my pc.

Nice to see more people on N4G are trying OnLive now. Everyone used to be hostile anytime I mentioned it. Been a member since launch. The experience is as only as good as your internet connection (which is terrible for me right now).

The service is awesome. Great Community. Don't listen to their deadlines cause they are almost always late. You get the best deals in gaming here. They have events with prizes where developers watch you play and chat with you.

The exclusives are coming next year. The more you use OnLive the less you consider getting another console.

It actually works best in the UK for now.

Well a lot of hostile gamers against OnLive were laughing at the idea of paying $60 a pop for a game on top of a subscription fee. Now that OnLive eliminated that problem less gamers are going to be hostile.

I myself used to be extremely hostile against OnLive but now that they fixed a lot of their business problems I have gained a lot of respect for the company. Whether or not I am interested in cloud gaming is another story. I prefer gaming on my PC, for many reasons other than better graphics. Mod support is very difficult for me to give up. If one day PC gaming becomes dead I'll seek a different hobby entirely.

It still has low resolutions, blur, slower reaction times, a very limited catalog of games, full priced games that you don't actually "own", etc.

The "hostility" (teH hATerZ!) is earned.

TooTall195276d ago (Edited 5276d ago )

Actually the resolution is at 720p which is higher than most console games, and 1080p is coming at no extra cost to us.

What are you comparing "full price" to? Cause I got Borderlands GOTY edition, FEAR 3, Mafia 2, and Amnesia Dark descent for free. I got Deus Ex: HR for $13. I didn't know I could get those prices for all the other platforms.

its a good concept and great for people with terrible computers to experience pc games but the picture quality can suck and my speed is 7mbps but today after going on for some time the quality has gotten better and they can have really good deals on games

Dannehkins5276d ago

I am wondering if this is teething issues.

As previously mentioned, I am on a 8mb line so I surpass the recommended requirements and so do you at 7mb (Isn't 5mb the recommended?); however, at times the quality can be terrible but at other times it can be good.

I am wondering if this is a problem with my connection or if this is just issues with Onlive and it is something they can sort out.

But anyway, I have experienced the same thing. The quality seems to jump around.

Brownghost5275d ago

The recommended is download speed of 512mbps. Games such as stalker and fear can look ugly but others like assassins creed look amazing. I hope this can improve in the future like Netflix to avoid so much screen tearing and pixalated look
