Can Microsoft Take Back Gaming This Holiday 2015?

I don’t know but I am excited to see what they will do. I own a PS4 but I’m a gamer. So I still get excited for new games. And this fall it looks like Microsoft is done playing around and is about to release it’s big guns.

That means it’s franchise players like Halo 5 and Gears of War. If that doesn’t get the hardcore gamers excited I don’t know if anything will. Hell I don’t even own the system and I’m excited as hell to see Halo 5. I must admit if any game is going to bring me back to Xbox, Halo is their best bet.

And how can you go wrong bringing back one of the biggest games of all time - with Gears Of War. The remastered version is looking really amazing, but what’s also really cool is we're going to get a look at the new one. This E3 couldn’t be more on fire. This is a hot as it gets, E3 June 15, 2015 is looking like it’s going to be huge.

It has not been an easy road for Microsoft, they have had to play second fiddle to the PS4, and I'm sure that's not a position they wanted to be in. Especially after the X360 had practically put Microsoft in the lead in gaming and against Sony. But that lead is all but gone, Sony is dominating with the PS4 and if the Microsoft is going to make a comeback, this is the time to do it, and the pressure to do it right could not be higher. Sony will surely come out with it's best hand, it's not like there going to just sit back and watch Microsoft.

Microsoft is making comments like "see the greatest games lineup in Xbox history". That a very bold statement to make. One that you are seriously going to have to back up, if they don’t want to get negative feedback from the E3 show. I mean if you say the greatest of Xbox history, it better be good.

I think this is going to be crazy, and I believe Microsoft wouldn’t say it unless they can back it up. Are you not convinced yet, well it looks like were also going to get to see Forza Motorsport 6, talk about bringing out the big guns. Could we see Fable Legends, Rise of The Tomb Raider, Maybe Crackdown will be there. These are not lite games.

Their not playing around this holiday season, and as a PS4 gamer, it’s starting to look like this just might be the best chance they have at convincing me to buy an XB1. Halo is looking amazing and having Gears of War surely is not going to hurt anything.

Microsoft also promises to reveal some unannounced games. Wonder what we could see. Could Microsoft really have some key unannounced games that could shift the podium back in their corner. One thing is really clear this, is going to be one hell of an E3. You are not going to want to miss one second of this epic show. It's put up or shut up time, and I think Microsoft knows this and they plan on going hard.

But the real question is can they really bring it this holiday season, they do have their work cut out for them, but I think it’s a smart bet to bet everything on what got you here, and having the big guns like Halo and Gears of War is a really smart play. Only after we see E3 will we be able to tell us for sure, but what’s your verdict on XB1 do you think they can wow us this year, can they really take back gaming in 2015?

Is this about to be the year of XB1, is that even possible?

What do you think, can Microsoft really surprise us this E3 and setup the XB1 to dominate this Holiday Season?

If this one doesn't have you excited I don't what will..

Used to be a big halo fan back in the day. This latest offering looks terrible to me. The story line looks atrocious (for no good reason suddenly the Hero of the UNSC is being hunted by Spartan IVs. Who thought it was a good idea to pit Spartan IIs against IVs??) and the multiplayer gameplay looks like a horrible combination of COD meets Halo with some extra parkour tossed in because why the hell not. 343 seem to be a developer that just isn't capable of handling the Halo series; but then again, Bungie started this trend with Reach.

Gazondaily3986d ago

"for no good reason suddenly the Hero of the UNSC is being hunted by Spartan IVs"

How do you know its for no good reason? There has to be a pretty good one if he has gone against the UNSC and somehow has Oni chasing him.

Oni are pretty shady too. Also, what on Earth has made Chief wander aimlessly to try and rescue Cortana? Something must have happened to make him think there is a way to retrieve her falafel.

" and the multiplayer gameplay looks like a horrible combination of COD meets Halo with some extra parkour tossed in because why the hell not"

What? Did you play the beta? If anyone describes Halo 5 mp has something with extra parkour they have absolutely no understanding of the game. Some extra fluidity and traversal elements = parkour?

The Halo 5 mp beta was brilliant- full on tough as nails and the most hardcore Halo gunplay since the series began.

I was a skeptic but I have high hopes for this. There are things to sort out such as region filters and I want to see how they tackle big team battle and the campaign but I am VERY excited.

garrettbobbyferguson3986d ago

Please, I don't want to play COD meets Halo with sprinting and scoping. It was bad enough in 4, it's compounded in 5.

"How do you know it's for no good reason"

THE HERO OF THE UNSC. THE MAN WHO SINGLE HANDEDLY WON THE WAR now has a target on his head from his own people. You tell me that there is a justifiable reason for this that isn't shoe horned in. I'd like to hear it. Not to mention, a team of Spartan IIs vs Spartan IVs. What are the Spartan IVs gonna do? Act smug as they get their asses annihilated?

Gazondaily3986d ago

"Please, I don't want to play COD meets Halo with sprinting and scoping. It was bad enough in 4, it's compounded in 5. "

No it isn't. What are you on about? Did you even play the beta? Its much more brutal and arena based than EVER before.

"You tell me that there is a justifiable reason for this that isn't shoe horned in. I'd like to hear it"

What on earth makes you think its shoe-horned in? Wy you have you adopted such an overbearing pessimistic approach without even knowing anything other than the premise of the story??

"Not to mention, a team of Spartan IIs vs Spartan IVs. What are the Spartan IVs gonna do? Act smug as they get their asses annihilated?"

Eh?? Have you not seen the teaser image where the Spartan II's are facing the IV's?

https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.a...

It could be wicked. Spartan 4's vs the old true Spartans.

darthv723986d ago

garrett... uhh you do know that some of the elements you describe as being COD meets halo originated in halo first. Right?

343 have been improving on things since bungie handed over the reigns. Can you blame them for refining the multiplayer over the natural course of time while COD came in with MW to pretty much steal the same ideas and run with them.

in fact, it isnt really about who does what first. It's about who does them better. I am not a COD player, never cared for the generic narrative. i prefer the futuristic story driven narrative of the halo series.

but to each their own.

Wow, that's a crazy list, really appreciate that player... thanks so much for that..

PhoenixUp3986d ago (Edited 3986d ago )

For Microsoft to be on top, Xbox has to dominate every region or at least most of them. That will never happen.

-Xbox platforms never do exceptionally well in Asia. Not even launching in China is helping Microsofts fortunes, with PS4 already outselling X1 despite the headstart.
-In Europe despite being more expensive and launching 1.5 years later, PS3 outsold 360 in that region by Spring 2008. Only place 360 came out on top last gen in that region was UK. That entire region had always been and always will be PlayStation Nation.
-In the rest of the world Sony usually dominates. Places like Central America, South America, Africa, and Middle East tend to side with PlayStation,

This gen the only region they are truly competitive in is North America, and they're already losing that to Sony. There's very little waggle room for them to somehow make a comeback. At this point its only logical to assume that this is as good as it gets for Microsoft. At 12 million sold in 1.5 years on the market, the fastest selling Xbox console is now selling on par with the slowest selling PlayStation console. That isn't so bad once you still realize PS3 went on to sell 86.5 million in nearly 9 years

This would also impact where software gets prioritized. After already achieving 50% of this generations console market, developers would be more poised to side with PS4 than X1 if any of the distributors would want to make any deals. This support will continue on into the golden years of 8th gen

Kavorklestein3986d ago

There really isn't much point in being top dog, because the following gen the tune changes to "how the mighty have fallen"

Then back and forth... etc.. etc.. people should buy whatever they want.
Nintendo, Sony, and MS, aren't goin anywhere so why fret about sales when you can enjoy all 3?

PhoenixUp3986d ago (Edited 3986d ago )

Well with the topic at hand of whether Microsoft can take back gaming, I'd argue that Microsoft never had it in the first place. Wii was the console that ultimately "won" last gen and PS3 beat 360 quickly in 2 out of the 3 major regions. The only area 360 won was having the highest software sales.

rainslacker3986d ago (Edited 3986d ago )

Top dog is a bit of a misnomer. Last gen the top dog was actually Nintendo, but that didn't mean anything. But to keep it more related to the topic, MS was never top dog. They did well last gen, and made a huge leap in not being just another Sega when compared to Sony, but they still didnt' outsell the PS3, nor has any of their consoles beat out the competition. This gen they will likely outsell the WiiU, but Sony will dominate the generation unless some major change happens within the next 12 months(roughly the halfway point of the gen if you believe that this gen will be a short one...and it will be for MS if they can't manage to stop this 2:1 sales deficit).

Anyhow, Sony being top dog for two gens in a row obviously helped them through a rough PS3 launch, and their top dog recognition allowed them to not only catch up, but surpass the 360, even if only by a hair. This is of course if we don't remove the padded numbers from the numerous failed 360 systems early in it's life which we all know were used to make MS sales look better.

Sony has never actually done poorly in the console war. They lost money on the PS3 due to the design decisions, but they didn't lose out on a significant portion of the market. They weren't even that far back in sales from the PS2 for the same time frame of sales. People always equated the 150+ million PS2 sales as something that happened in 7 years, but that number took almost 14 years to happen.

MS is Sony's first real competition in 4 generations of gaming. Nintendo and Sega have not been able to "beat" Sony, and while Nintendo did sell more Wii's than PS3's, Nintendo still isn't really considered a direct competitor of Sony for last gen due to Nintendo's focus of markets. I believe MS gave Sony a good run for their money last gen, but lets be realistic here. If MS hadn't released a year earlier, if they hadn't gotten a large following of rabid fans who downplayed PS for no reason, and if Sony hadn't of come out with a $500-600 console, they would have wiped the floor with MS last gen as well.

It's time that some people just come to the realization that Sony is just a more respected brand in video gaming than MS is. More people like the brand and more people like the games it's provided. MS has their following, but it doesn't appeal to the same broad demographic that the PS brand does, and a lot of that is due to their focus on a few key franchises, which while well loved among it's fans, don't appeal to the general populace.

The real money in consoles comes from the casuals. In 2-3 years, those are who's going to be buying the systems the most, and to date, Sony still has more market presence to lure them in. MS has it's offerings, I will admit, but they don't have that perception of being a family, casual oriented console.

star_lancer3986d ago

"The only area 360 won was having the highest software sales."

Uh, selling more games is pretty damn important when it comes to "gaming", despite how unimportant you are trying to make it seem. 360 selling more games than PS3 shows that there are a lot of people who bought PS3's for reasons other than gaming (a fact that's pretty well known). The fact that people chose to game more on the 360 than on PS3 proves that MS did "have it".

Also, 360 beat PS3 in the largest gaming country in Europe (UK), as well as the largest gaming country in the world (US). It's like the difference between having a bunch of minor league championships or having one or two in the major leagues. The quantity may be greater, but it's the quality that matters.

rainslacker3986d ago (Edited 3986d ago )

I'd imagine the number of people that brought a PS3 for non-gaming purposes is outweighed by the number of consoles MS sold as replacements for broken RROD 360's. After the first year of the PS3's life, the reasons people brought a PS3 for outside of gaming(server clusters and Blu-Ray players) got options which were cheaper and better...although the PS3 is still one of the best BR players on the market.

I'd really like to see some report that isn't from VGChartz that says that the 360 had higher software sales than the PS3. One that takes into account the 20 million or so units of software that sold in the first year of the 360's life and removes it would be nice. I looked for any report that wasn't some flame bait to try and verify that 360 sold more software, but failed to be able to in many different types of google searches. The closest one I could find was from 2011, for 2010.

Given that the attach rate was about equal after the 2nd year of the PS3, it seems that the actual software sales were about even between them, beyond that first year.

Anyhow, does it really matter if they won in those countries, or had the higher software sales last gen? Did it translate into them doing good this gen? Well maybe...they aren't doing poorly, they just aren't doing as well as Sony.

also, just a nitpick...UK isn't a country.

PhoenixUp3986d ago (Edited 3986d ago )

I didn't try to make it seem unimportant. It was a legitimate victory for 360 to end the generation with the most software sales. People are still interested in buying games on PS3 since its only 8 million units away from surpassing Wii software sales. Nowadays it sells the most software weekly out of all the other platforms, everything except PS4 recently.

However Xbox 360 never had a year where it sold the most units though, so it never had a huge dominant stranglehold on gaming like NES, PS1, PS2 and PS4 had with them having 50% of the market. It got outsold by PS2 the first year it was on the market, and every year after that it got outsold by PS3 and Wii.

The US and UK weren't enough to keep Xbox 360 ahead. Even though it ended up reigning supreme in those regions, the console is still the slowest selling 7th gen console after all is said and done. Clearly the rest of the world holds a huge importance in establishing dominance.

star_lancer3986d ago (Edited 3986d ago )

There were actually TWO full years in which 360 outsold PS3 worldwide. The myth that PS3 outsold 360 every year is believed by the legions of Sony supporters around here, but it's completely false.

@Rainslacker - The software sales don't support your opinion that many 360's were sold as replacements. If someone bought a new 360 to replace a defective one, they wouldn't have to replace their games. However, since 360 sold more software, we can reasonably determine that most 360 sales were to new customers who then bought new games.

FallenAngel19843986d ago

What two years did 360 beat PS3? The only one was in 2006 when it was only available for two months. Its not a myth, its a fact that PS3 outsold 360 every year after 2006. That's how PS3 eventually surpassed 360 in 2013, by selling at a faster rate since Day 1. The fact it did so with all the initial disadvantages just reinforces how PlayStation is still a stronger brand than Xbox.

The fact still remains that Xbox 360 never held a dominant position in the gaming industry like the Atari 2600, NES, PS1, PS2, and PS4 all had. Those consoles gained 50% of their respective generation's marketshare. Microsoft will never make a console that can accomplish this. The fact that Xbox One is actually performing better than 360 and still fails to accomplish this is proof this will never be a possibility for Microsoft.

rainslacker3986d ago

It would imply that the attach rate of the 360 was actually higher than reported. If you count attach rate based on active units, then it's more representative of the actual attach rate over units sold, but that gets to be a bit convoluted since it's really hard to track. However, it still doesn't take into account the extra year of just the 360 being on the market. During that year, MS already had a 20 million software units head start, give or tae some...don't care to look up exact numbers. What might be a better indication is adding in PS2 software sales during that first year, but the PS2 had a distinct advantage in install base during that time, so it's not exactly fair.

Since I haven't been able to find any kind of verifiable sales data on the amount of software that was sold for each system either yearly, or over it's lifetime, I'm curious where people get the idea of the 360 selling a ton more software on the system. Seems it's all assumption, likely based off VGChartz. I don't doubt that the 360 sold more software, just the value of that because there is no way to verify the approximate or exact numbers.

In any case, it doesn't matter. Sony is selling more software now, and since there is no reason to buy a PS4, or X1, for anything other than games, it's going to be much easier to see come the end of the gen who did better, hopefully without having to pull out all these justifications from our asses. In the mean time, since Sony is selling more software, it'll continue to get the most support. MS will get it's support from most games as well, so no need to fret.

star_lancer3985d ago (Edited 3985d ago )

@FallenAngel1984

2008:
-360 10.8 million worldwide
-PS3 10.7 million worldwide

2011:
-360 14.9 million worldwide
-PS3 14.1 million worldwide

Those numbers come directly from MS & Sony's OFFICIAL financial reports. It is a FACT.

FallenAngel19843980d ago (Edited 3980d ago )

In 2008 Wii was the highest selling console. However after doing research I've found that Xbox 360 was indeed the highest selling console worldwide in 2011.

http://www.geekwire.com/201...

I admit I was wrong and this is an admirable feat achieved for Microsoft worthy of 1000G. That being said, this still it wasn't able to keep up the momentum of being the top selling console worldwide for long to make the Xbox brand a dominant force in the industry. Yet Xbox 360 will most likely be able to finish the gen with most software sold despite being the slowest selling major console of the 7th gen.

Nowadays with Sony reporting that they own 80% of the market in some countries, it'll be really difficult for Microsoft to repeat that accomplishment on a worldwide scale.

It depends on what you mean.

Sales wise, they're not going to be able to do it, without some drastic chances to the gaming landscape. North America is Xbox's greatest market making up over 60% of their total console sales each generation, so as long as Sony is neck and neck or ahead in NA Xbox will never win the sales race, because EU and JP are PlayStation land when it comes to "core" gaming. If they want to win sales they have to expand the market to new regions.

Hardware is already a lost battle, but optimizations and more performance is always good, and the XBO can still pump out good enough quality (this is coming from someone who is also a PC gamer with a solid rig).

Where they can win are games, price, and software.

Going into E3 they have the advantage currently simply because we know most of their games. Halo 5, Tomb Raider, Forza 6, Fable Legends, Gears of War HD for holiday 2015 Crackdown, Scalebound, Quantum Break, and possibly a Gears 4 teaser for 2016. Those 9 games alone are a solid show, add in some exclusive indies, some 3rd party games with exclusive content (some people truly care about these things), and a couple more surprise exclusives (Rare, and those other 4 studios they split off) and MS is guaranteed to have a great E3, especially for Xbox 360 fans. For them this is an A conference in the making, and there's still a minimum of +50m users out there (based on the total number of Gold subscriptions). All that's missing is a final price drop down to $299, and MS has done everything they can and need to do to cater to their fan base.

The cherry on top is the software war, and another area that MS can "win". Getting Window 10 devices to tie in with Xbox One gives Xbox games access to remote play beyond what Sony currently offers. It's not a selling point, but a cool feature nonetheless, to get gamers to pick up more Microsoft devices like a Windows tablet, or a simply putting a 750 Ti (come on 950 Ti) into their computer and making a gaming PC. They're already in the lead when it comes to multimedia, so push ahrd on that front as well and make Xbox the device you always want to turn on because everything is at your fingertips.... or voice command. These are areas Sony is behind in, simply because MS is a software company first, so take advantage of it.

And really that's all they can do and hope for the best.

1. Games (Usual Xbox exclusives + New experience)
2. Price ($299, and always be lower than PS4)
3. Software & Multimedia

Is that enough to beat the PS4, no unless Sony has no big exclusives this holiday season which we don't really know too much of, but it's EXTREMELY unlikely to happen (plus 2016 is going to be huge for Sony thanks to the delays). Sony has the ball in their court when it comes to the price game since MS jumped first, but a mistimed cut can be meaningless, really leaving them with Software and Multimeadia as the only semi-easy win they have.

Xbox is going to more than likely just have to take 2nd place this gen, that being said they still have at least 50m fans out there, and this E3 they have everything they need to cater to that audience game wise, their services are prepping for some great features, and all they need is the core entry level price of $299.

The XBO won't take back gaming in 2015, but it will be the console Xbox 360 were looking for at launch and a big increase in sales will show that.

2014 sales: 8m
2015 sales: 11m - 13m

That's enough reason to be happy.

ABizzel13986d ago

Random thought:
On a side note the XBO should be at 13m console sold by now, and the PS4 23.6m consoles sold which means the PS4 has already outsold the GameCube's lifetime sales, and by the end of June it should have surpassed the original Xbox as well.

So by the end of the year the PS4 should knock the N64 off the list (33m) and take the 13 spot of best selling hardware of all time, and the XBO should knock either the original Xbox from its spot (25m) and be number 16.

iTechHeads3986d ago

"That means it’s franchise players like Halo 5 and Gears of War."

It's Halo 5 and a remastered 360 game.....

Sony has a remastered God Of War 3 coming this June as well and that was definitely one of PS3s best games, yet you don't see people going on about how amazing it's going to be. Why? Because we've already played it. This goes for any remastered game. We've already played it. We want new games, not old ones. We want next-gen games.

rainslacker3986d ago

People make a big deal about remasters when they're on PS for some reason. Halo:MCC was an amazing collection for remastering, and I will give it credit for what it is, but GeOW to me is about the same as GOW3. Both are single games, made to look prettier, and sold at $40 or so dollars.

I don't mind remasters at all, I buy the ones I think are worth it, and forget about the rest, but I don't see why one remaster is better than another when they are comparable in quality.

I'd imagine to the average customer, remasters are just that. Some people want them for any number of reasons, or they don't and move on. I don't see people going on about how they aren't going to buy a new game they aren't interested in(usually outside of exclusives), they just move on.

Since I don't see fewer new games coming out due to remasters, i really don't see what the problem is.

For GOW3, I'll wait for it to come down in price a bit. I played it a couple years ago on PS3 along with the PS2/PSP remasters, and while I enjoy the games, I have too much backlog to get excited over it.

Gazondaily3986d ago

"It's Halo 5 ..."

And that's where it can stop right there because simply deriding it as "oh another Halo" doesn't do justice to the fact that it is a mega title.

Its like someone saying "oh meh...its just another Uncharted".

" We want new games, not old ones. We want next-gen games."

Halo is a new game, not an old one and is a next-gen game. So is Forza and so is the next Gears game (which is what the OP was alluding to). Real reasons to be excited.

Khajiit863986d ago

I fail to see where Halo 5 is different from the others. Looks the same to me, of course the story will be different but that could be a bad thing. The MP looks the same like I have played a million times. Hopefully its not taking the COD route.

freshslicepizza3986d ago

short answer, no.

long answer, they will try and do what they should have done years ago but this is now a desperate microsoft. they have to concentrate on first party now. they don't have an early lead which helped them with sales on the xbox 360. they don't have the better hardware or more importantly easier hardware to work on. sony crossed their t's and dotted all their i's when creating the ps4. sony also has something microsoft never had, worldwide appeal.

the question then becomes, can microsoft take back america?

BIGBOSS083986d ago

xbox one has fallen way too far behind now. theres no way it'll even make a slight comeback. yeah sure xbox one is going to outsell PS4 when halo 5 comes out but thats going to be in the US only. nothing they do will be enough.
