ShareFACTORY Unlimited

As I made my way through the list of ever more obscure features of the recent 1.7 update, an exciting idea began to form in my finals-ridden brain. I'm going to relate its substance as well as I can for not having slept for 26 hours, and I expect a healthy dose of feedback when I wake up in a few days.

************

Sony is making it more and more easy to Share gameplay and commentary based on the PS4. From the dedicated recording and streaming mechanisms, to the new SHARE Factory and the rumored ability to Share songs from your MU (Music Unlimited) subscription and upcoming MP3 app, they have been proving that they are willing to try new things and listen to feedback.

Well, I have some feedback for them, alright.

I am one of those people with an MU subscription and VU (Video Unlimited) purchases. Yup. True.
I don't use either of them that much though, so when I do it's in cases where I have a strong affinity for the content. I own like 8-9 movies on VU, and they are movies that I love and know that I will watch over and over again. In case you've never indulged, VU has slightly less content than Netflix but streams much better over a poor-to-medium connection, and, (by my eye), better visual quality of streamed content at HD levels. Similarly, I have favorite songs on MU. Of course, it's not as rich as YouTube, but hear me out. This is where it gets interesting:

-> We now have a free app called SHARE Factory, and millions of gamers already learning and loving the idea of *Share*

-> Sony has two largely unused streaming services, and there are no sings that interest will go up.

.....do you see it? Do you?
Well if not, let me explain how a mutual symbiosis can be achieved.
Say I want to whip up a gameplay collage or a glitch reel. Traditionally, as a PC power user, I would put custom soundtracks and relevant cinema clips into a pot with said gameplay content, all under the appropriate purview of Fair Use. But not everyone HAS a PC or the know-how to make such fine-tailored content. Maybe I don't want to export all my captures to a PC before uploading them. Share and SHARE Factory are about instant gratification and accessibility.
So, let me - inside of SHARE Factory's wrapper - take short video clips from VU content that I own (or rent, even?), and insert them into my SF (SHARE Factory) project as I would a bit of commentary or music. Speaking of music, same goes for MU. Let me insert a clip from a song (or hell, even the whole thing) from a streamed song directly into my project. The possibilities are nearly endless, since Sony is itself a media content provider.

See? Two "goods" are being served.
1) I, without having to shunt stuff over to my PC (if I even have one), am able to add bits of my favorite content to my projects on the fly - be it songs or video clips. I can sew together the capture from that one time in Shadowfall MP when I rounded a corner into a whole enemy squad ... with ... a clip from a Dirty Harry movie (for example, IDK if they actually have any). Because I totally pwned them and I want a suitable homage from a classic movie to accentuate my badassery. Or maybe I want to add a few bars from Nocturne no. 20 to my Resogun montage.
All without ever putting down my DS4.

2) Sony gets more people into its MU & VU services by letting them try it out this way. A healthy booster would be a one-month free demo of each, but this would work as well. Nothing advertised Second Son like Photo Mode did, and nothing would advertise Sony's media services quite as strongly as thousands of SF videos that integrated cinematic odds and ends into their productions.

....VU is a good service, but prohibitive pricing and distribution protocols on Sony's part will ensure that it never competes with Netflix or TPB as a source of creative content for gameplay montages or even as a general content source. They can fix this by such innovation - heck, I'd even add functionality to Share a VU movie being watched with friends....much like how MU songs can now be shared. Someone needs to pitch this to them.

Hmmm, I'm getting too tired to think clearly, getting off track, because I just realized that PS4 could have a killer Share function if SF let us turn our projects into GIFs before upload/offload. PS4 rode a wave of GIFs to victory last year at launch, so it's only fitting.

Ideas/Counters welcome.

I like it tried it yesterday it's good, just needs more Effects or a way to upload customs. IMHO

Conzul4372d ago

Yeah I can't wait to get into it. Just one more week of Finals to get through....!

SaffronCurse4372d ago

I like the idea of sharing your videos with the VU service. Hopefully they see this feedback.

Conzul4372d ago

Well I meant inserting VU content into SF, but I didn't even think of that. THat's a great idea.

Clown_Syndr0me4371d ago

I wouldn't buy a subscription to share vids Ive made, that should be free.

unfortunately, VU does not have a subscription model.
So that isn't something you need worry about.

can't wait to hear how this is spun negatively.

Its nice there is some kind of drop... but is that all they really value CoD to be, a lousy $7 a month?

I was hoping it would drop by $10.

In my region, it’s still more expensive than it was before the last price hike, but it’s a far more viable price point.

Losing Call of Duty from the service, honestly, has zero effect on me, and given they chose to make it so, it’s probably not the big seller they originally thought. Overall, it’s really good news, but I still think they have work to do on the tier structure, having Premium and PC at the same price point with different features feels odd.

Yep take COD out. Them waiting a year is interesting but it make sense. They don't want certain ppl waiting 4 to 6 months they want fomo and maximum sales. Wait a year while the new one releases.

Ok so far so good.
