A Reminder on N4G Sourcing Guidelines

Hello, everyone.

I wanted to stop in and remind people that, per the N4G Submission Guidelines -- https://n4g.com/articles/ou... and scroll down to Submission Tutorial -- N4G requires linking to the most original source of news when possible for news. This means that posts made by developers and publishers on social media and forums that otherwise meet our other guidelines should be used. Patch notes from Steam and official news on the game sites, such sources should also be used for news of game updates and events. Furthermore, if the source isn't a source that can be originally sourced, you need to credit that source using the Credit URL option when submitting content.

This information should not be new to most of our long-time contributors. We've been really lenient for a long time and have been making corrections as we find them, but we will start handing out restrictions for those who have had warnings about this guideline item because it has become apparent that people are ignoring the guideline.

N4G is reliant on its original sourcing guidelines. It's what we use to make sure sites don't take your content as their own and prevents the same from every other source. It keeps things fair for those who create content.

Thank you for reading,
Christopher

I don't want to dig up dirt or call anyone out, but was my report on this one right or wrong, and if right, was it the submitter that 'corrected' it? If so, seems like there a few broken processes here.
If I'm in the wrong, then I accept it.

You are correct.

Our guidelines on SWAS specify that the original source must be approved at least 6 hours before any SWAS submission is made among other guidelines. This is in addition to the guidelines that the source for a SWAS submission mustbe from a lengthy interview or video in which the information being shared is hidden and not easily seen.

Please note, the ticket system exists for questions like this at any time. And if you see something, please ask! The moderation team isn't always online and can miss things.

That story was submitted exactly 6 hours after the original interview was approved. I made sure of it. I also looked at the interview in question and this information was deep into the interview. So I "fixed" Knushwoods report and disagreed with it.

I know the guidelines really well. His report was wrong. I submitted a valid SWAS submission in every way. How could Knushwood be correct. I know the info was from the BBC interview, but it was deep into the Interview information (I actually checked before submitting), and I submitted a story on specific information from deep in that same interview. I submitted exactly 6 hours after the BBC interview was approved.

I made sure and looked into everything.

Please explain to me how I was wrong? I'd love to learn how

And yes, I feel attacked here and I think this is bullshit. I know the guidelines well. I make reports all the time. Maybe I should just not care anymore. I dont even know why I'm upset about this. I followed the guidelines and you say Knushwood is correct. I know he is not

I respect your decision and apologise to you and Knushwood. I will leave you guys to it. I can't find the original interview that I saw with all the questions and the portal news was way down the bottom. There seems to just be a summary now where the interview was. I remember reading the whole interview by BBC with many printed questions and I can't find it anymore. I will leave.

@ Christopher
Thanks for confirming.
That's a relief.

@ potatoseal
I'm not try to get one over on you or anything. I just saw the article, thought that the original source should be getting a credit, and called it out. I thought it was the right call but wasn't 100% certain.

Have a good day/evening.

No you're wrong. I looked at the original Interview man. It was approved exactly 6 hours BEFORE I made my submission. You were wrong and so is Christofer I'm afraid to say. The info in the submission was from deep into the interview as well. I followed all guidelines, and the fact you brought it up actually pisses me off. I follow and read the guidelines regularly and I follow them.

i feel like these guidelines are sometimes really unclear, because theres too many possibilities as to how devs for example put their information out.

like, do i put in the french source? or do i google translate into english first ?

is reddit a viable source?

can i put in a german article that comes our hours before they come out on american sites? due to the timezone differences? do i google translate that?

are videos sources? what if theres no source but it makes the rounds online?

what is considered a rumour?
what is considered news? opinions?

there's too many variations, variables that dont get mention at all.

i think the guidelines need abit of an overhaul and cover some of them different things.

imo.

Google translate.

Reddit is only viable as an original source when from a developer or publisher account.

Yes to earlier articles, yes to translated version.

Videos from developers and publishers can be sources and we have the submission types of trailer, video, and videocast for them. Otherwise they typically need to be newsed from a gaming site as is typically done. There are some exemptions, such as PC Gaming Show or TGA videos that the mod team may post as they exist outside the guidelines coverage.

A rumor is anything not officially said that is otherwise on its own news. Examples include release dates, announcements of new games or content, images of unreleased hardware, and general details of unreleased games or content. N4G moderators will vet this type of news as seen as not all people who share rumors are vetted.

News is general information on video games or its culture. Release dates, game specs and details, happenings with a gaming company, news on an industry person or developer, etc.

Opinions are opinion-based writings and not based on just analysis of technology and the like. BGFG has chosen to include in this opinions from users on social media sites shared by gaming sites. Opinions are personal and not to be taken as fact in anyway. Pretty much the exact same as you sharing a comment about your opinion on a game here, only the author has a word requirement and often needs to pad the article with unnecessary text.

Not having these variations makes it harder for people to find the content they want. Not everyone wants to see rumors and some people just want to see the latest trailers. Without these, tbh, normal types of news people would be forced to work harder to find news for them. If you don't care about the type, then ignore them since the news is presented mixed by default.

Edit: I would like to note that the description of each submission type is in the Submission Tutorial, which is part of our guidelines linked in my blog.

Articles not in English -> translate

And yes to the German, if translated. In general, you should be linking to the most original source. So if the German site is the source then go for it. Make sure to find the most original source!

Videos, reddit, any kind of social media is acceptable only if the post is from an industry professional. We define industry professionals as developers and publishers (of games, not 'content') only.

There is a lot of grey area type stuff with a lot of little nuances. I would just recommend doing things in good faith, trying to follow reports and then just ask if something doesn't make sense or is unclear. Mods have all been here for years and still go back and fourth with each other on particulars of submissions all the time.

As far as article type, idk what to say there. Sometimes its not always clear but use best judgement and someone will tell you if it's not right.

Best Adventure Game of 2025

VGChartz's Lee Mehr: "While not carrying the same heft it enjoyed long ago, last year was one of the adventure genre's most commercially-successful years in this century. A Telltale-esque adventure eclipsing 3 million sales in three months would be the talk of the town were it not for another adventure game hurdling over 10 million sales in two. Though not all finalists reached those heights, each did share a greater amount of spotlight compared to similar titles within their respective sub-genres.

Past any sales thresholds and popularity contests, 2025 also deserves credit for its creativity; the last time our entire shortlist consisted exclusively of new IPs was for Best Adventure Game of 2020. An impressive year for the genre, with even greater potential ahead."
