N4G Contest - Day 18: Why So Sad

For information on the "20 Days of..." contest, please see https://n4g.com/user/blogpo...

***

Congratulations to ThePsychoGamer, our seventeenth day winner.

On the eighteenth day, the question we have for you is "What was the worst bit of gaming news for you in 2018?"

"The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment..."

oasdada2658d ago

for me it was sony not attending e3 2019.. seriously they're the highlight of the show for me

SegaGamer2658d ago

I think I agree with this. What person who is seriously into gaming doesn't like E3? I look forward to it every year, and Sony pulling out of the event leaves a massive hole. I don't think it would bother me so much if we had a few other publishers around to show stuff off. EA and Bathesda bore me to death, you never know what you are going to get with Microsoft, Ubisoft and the PC gaming show, it could be good or bad, Nintendo just have a Nintendo Direct video, Sony are usually great.

My interest in E3 next year is really low at this point.

For me that PSN plus is not doing ps3 or Vita games anymore and now it will be just 2 games a month. I still play my ps3 and vita and feel this is a bit of a kick in the nuts but I know times move on.

The scandal around Telltale Games was quite bad. With hints of insiders well aware of the closure coming and using that info for insider trading, 90% of the staff dropped without their compensation and pay. Even their working conditions were known to be appalling. It was probably the worst thing to come from gaming this year.

Also Stranded Deep was due to release roughly a day after the announcement and that got dropped. I was really looking forward to it too

Chris0922658d ago

Telltale going down and all their employees being let go without warning.

ninsigma2658d ago

Probably kingdom hearts 3 delay.

Marathon Review - IGN

This ruthless, deeply unapproachable extraction shooter is worth every ounce of hell it puts you through.

ApexLanding2344m ago

I'm glad the game has been well received if for no other reason than to hush the naysayers who have been on a desperate journey to trash it and compare it to Concord but I have to ask, why would I want to play something that is considered "deeply unapproachable"? Congrats to Bungie on making a game that is getting positive reviews across the board but extraction shooters just arent my thing and when you add "deeply unapproachable" into the mix I'm definitely out.

MIDGETonSTILTS173m ago

What makes it unapproachable is the initial curve. This is the Dark Souls of multiplayer shooters, without being a simulator like experience. You can lose everything very fast if you don’t take risks strategically. But, once you understand the game, you know how to bounce back quickly, too.

People bought Elden Ring in droves , even though it was unapproachable. But people understood the point of their challenge from Dark Souls 1-3. Marathon is just still trying to explain what it is to the market.

For anybody that hated CoD’s inclusion of perks like Martyrdom to make it easier for people to get kills, this game is for you. The kills are always fair, because the gunplay is perfectly balanced.

Playing solo it is the multiplayer equivalent of Alien Isolation. Playing with peers it becomes Halo’s gunplay crossed with R6’s high stakes.

This is a game for those that hate any game that caters to the lowest common denominator. I hated CoD’s Martyrdom perk because it catered to noobs, and Marathon avoids any such mechanics. I love that it is trying to be something by different, because it very much succeeds.

So it turned out the game is great. Gameplay is top notch.

A $1,000 PS6 And Xbox Helix Are Dangerous For The Future Of Gaming

This past week, Sony announced it was raising prices on all PlayStation hardware, with all consoles going up $100 to $150 each. And this is after a separate price hike last year. Xbox did something similar, but now the current “winner” is a PS5 Pro costing a whopping $900.

Christopher4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

We don't need new hardware for a long while. Focus on the games.

Sciurus_vulgaris2h ago

The current Xbox and Sony consoles are surprisingly efficient consoles. I think they could last for another 5 years. Especially with graphics progression slowing.

bigfish1h ago

Unfortunately the folks in Sonys R & D department would beg to differ as it would put them out of a job. In short companies follow a cycle where they need to keep innovating to keep up with advancements in technology and to stay relevant. Take the ps5 pro for example, this provided a valuable stepping stone into the AI up scaling department for Sony with PSSR, if they hadn’t created the pro they would have been falling behind, missed out on valuable research and less self sufficient as a business moving forward

cloganart1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

It wouldn't be such a big issue if our salaries also went up, but that has been stagnating for years.

Our buying power is shrinking amidst global inflation.

I'd rather we stick with the current consoles a few more years before Helix or PS6.

Jin_Sakai46m ago

Better subsidize and eat the cost or risk your console business.

Duke1942m ago

If they are able to sell the PS5 Pro at almost $900, they are ABSOLUTELY going to rush to put out a new machine for over 1k. They know that gamers will complain but ultimately buy it
