Two Unanswered Questions About Super Mario Maker...

I was able to make it down to my local Best Buy to get a glimpse of #SuperMarioMaker and from the sizable line that wound well into an adjacent section I could tell I wasn’t the only one looking forward to it. What I was more interested in though, was any details I could pry loose from the @NintendoAmerica reps (which wasn’t much) about the social element to Super Mario Maker; namely the parameters surrounding sharing user-created courses.

One thing I was able to pick up from the reps was that apparently in order to upload it to the community hub for others to download and play you must have completed it yourself. There wasn’t a straight answer for me when I asked about how this would be measured.

The best guess I got (from a guy who’d either known one of the reps personally or had gotten cool with him the day of the event) was that there’s a tracking/time stamp element in the game that marks the level as passable. There must also be a filter in place to keep inappropriate constructions from going live (I can already see the fiasco that would flare if a level with mature themes eeked through). Whether or not this is automated (considering the sheer number of submissions that’ll be uploaded on the daily it must be) wasn’t communicated either.

That brought me to my next question: was it possible to share your creations outside of uploading it to the Nintendo cloud? Again, the rep didn’t know but I’m almost willing to bet it won’t be possible just due to the threat of home brewing and reverse engineering. Still, if you’re going to put a sliver in the door of the mod community, the Wii U and Super Mario Bros. franchise similarly are squeaky clean fun enough to allow it.

The even itself was fun and seeing how well the kids took to the idea of a customizable Mario experience gives me optimism on just how well this idea went over. There were a couple reps there handing out swag and giving surveys so Nintendo is just as interested in the metrics behind the mod community as Bethesda is.

Imagine a Legend of Zelda Maker. If this sells well it could very well happen.

*I contacted Nintendo via Twitter; as of this post they’ve not replied.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
