Gamer Girls Magazine: Universally Insulting Gamers

There’s been this huge buzz growing over a brand new magazine called Gamer Girls. At first sight, one would see that title and think, “What in the world could be wrong with a magazine dedicated to female gamers? How sexist is it to be upset at the notion of a magazine designed to celebrate women who love games?” Well, the answer is that yes, there is sexism involved when discussing Gamer Girls magazine, but it is in no way being perpetuated by those who have a negative opinion on it.

The philosophy behind the Gamer Girls magazine is not as they would like you to think; this is not a magazine designed to celebrate women who love to game. One look at the cover tells all; an extremely sexy woman dressed in an extremely scantily cladded outfit (damn near naked) holding a controller. Take a peak at this article discussing the magazine just to see some of what you’ll be able to get monthly from Gamer Girls:

http://www.dailydot.com/gee...

Now, perhaps I’m behind on the times being an older gamer, has it become the norm for female gamers to play in their baby tees and thigh high socks? While it’s nice to know that they aren’t going with the over used stereotype of the unattractive, geeky girl that loves to play games, I feel like this is even a bigger slap in the fact to female gamers. It’s crazy to think that now, at a point in gaming where women are gaining more and more acceptance in gaming and that where we’re moving to a place where even the term girl gamer is slowly becoming a thing of a past (as ultimately we’re all just gamers), that something to this extreme would be brought to market.

It’s also can be looked at as an underhanded jab at the male gamer as well. The stereotype of the sexless, lonely geek is something that has been around since gaming gained momentum; while it’s clear that gaming is enjoyed by all walks of life there are still those who hold this archaic view of gamers. Now, enter a magazine full of hot women who apparently get the same joy that most male gamers do from gaming; so much so that they have to shed their clothing and leer lustfully at you while wrapping their hands around that controller and playing with those sticks. Super-hot isn’t it? As a guy who games, you just have to be extremely thrilled at the opportunity to pick up this magazine and leer at chicks who “share” a common passion of yours, right? After all, that’s what we loser gamers like to do.

If this magazine gains any type of legitimate success, it will become another sad and disgusting mark on an already stained social state of affairs. Hopefully, gamers will be a bit smarter than this and not give Gamer Girls the chance to legitimize itself. No matter how popular it has become, gaming still has a bit of ways to go to rid itself of sad practices and stereotypes thrown its way; magazines like this go a long way in ruining gaming’s chances of going beyond those things.

So what’s your take on Gamer Girls magazines and things like this? Is this good for gaming or not? Thanks for reading my article, it is much appreciated. Peace.

I don't know what you are talking about. Certainly, right before I game, I oil all of my muscles and six pack abs, throw on some Georgio Armani Gio and am usually only wearing a pair of biker shorts. Whenever I hold the controller, I am flexing.

Occasionally I use the dreamboat look to get women excited. When my wife joins me, she is always wearing lingerie, high heels, and make up.

We don't game for very long.

LOL I can only imagine the things your Wii remote or PlayStation Move controllers have seen if you have them LOL

Disagree strongly.

This gaming magazine is no insult to gamers. Allow me to explain.

Let's say you knew someone. Friend, family member, whatever. And let's say that this person found out that you love to ballet dance and they started ragging on you, and they never took you seriously because of it. Here are my 2 questions based on this situation.

1. Do you think you'd EVER be able to convince this person to change their stance on this, and if not then...

2. Do you think it's worth your time to associate with people like this, and to let them dictate your life and what you find amusing to do?

This magazine is only insulting to people who are professionally insulted, to people who WANT to see offense, to the immature and the naive.

Normal, mature adults can see this for what it is. Irrelevant. Only non-gamers would have a negative opinion about gaming because of this skin magazine and its loose attachment to gaming, and their opinion doesn't matter because they aren't gamers and never will be.

So no, this isn't insulting to anything or anyone unless they choose to let it be insulting. And when you choose to let something like this be insulting to you, you're only debasing yourself.

blak_magus4421d ago

I get what you're saying and all but you actually derail your argument by claiming that I debase myself. So you are saying by finding offense in things makes you value yourself less as a person? If so than anyone who finds offense in racism, sexism, religious oppression or discrimination of any kind is debasing themselves for finding a problem with something they perceive as wrong.

I certainly know you're not saying that you're the type of person is comfortable with all of these things because you don't have to immediately deal with it or choose not to be in the presence of things that are of an offensive nature as well. Just because it doesn't effect you directly doesn't make it irrelevant, otherwise it seems to me that you're saying that so long as you're fine and happy what happens in the rest of the world really doesn't matter.

Mind you, if this doesn't offend you, fine, that's understandable, but because it doesn't offend you doesn't mean that it's something that doesn't offend others or that should be easily dismissed; certainly not by those who do have issue with it because you don't have issue with it.

DragonKnight4421d ago

No, you missed my point. I'm saying that allowing yourself to not only be offended, but also have the belief that something so inconsequential is offensive to an entire group, or that it makes a separate group form a negative opinion about a certain group based on nothing but superficial stuff is debasing yourself. You're telling people who don't matter that their opinion that doesn't matter actually does matter because you care about it.

If there is any person out there who would actually form a negative opinion about gamers because of something like this, or think that gamers are somehow like this, then chances are they aren't a gamer. Chances also are that they are very narrow minded and superficial in their thinking. These people will not have their minds changed so caring about what they think is a waste of time.

Offense is a choice, especially when you take offense over something that hasn't happened to you. But even if it has, taking offense is GIVING power. Maturity is being able to rise above the minutia like this and realize that you have a choice to not be offended, to not think that this will taint gamers everywhere because it doesn't.

Making a big deal out of this CREATES offense. People who would otherwise not care about something like this could be made to care about it thinking that it's wrong not to. Besides, when's the last time someone came up to you and told you you had to strip if you wanted to play a game?

@ DragonKnight
I agree with you. But I also agree with the fact that people can be offended if they feel offended. Sometimes, that feeling of being offended is just the knee-jerk reaction. And in those scenarios, I recommend discretion, or not letting it affect you if possible...Like you were saying.

But it's the other side of the same coin to remember that just because we can choose to ignore bigotry, or ignorance, doesn't mean we should exclusively disregard things. Sometimes, the best way to deal with it IS to think about it, or talk about it.

For the sake of this post, I like reading various things, and I agree with both you and blak_magus for various reasons. :)

But while we're on the topic of nude/sexy gaming...I personally like to game naked with my favorite hat on. And Socks. I always wear the cleanest socks I can find in my drawer lol

I am slightly offended that the gaming industry still sees gamers in this light. It has nothing to do with how the general populous perceives us. I have a problem with the fact that we have a goddamn internet's worth of pornography, and yet the gaming industry still invests in crap like this as if we're all a bunch of 13 year old boys that still get off at the sight of some cleavage or a bouncing boob.

I am not offended because I don't like the way my next door neighbors look at me when I tell them I play games. I am offended because the continued promotion of this "culture" inevitably trickles into the games we get...

I really haven't given much thought to this new gaming girl magazine (aside from my thoughts reading this blog). Personally it doesn't bother me, and I don't see any harm coming from it.

The only people who will know that this magazine, and all the models, really have no clue about gaming... are the gamers. Anybody else who reads it just see's really hot chicks playing video games and enjoying video game peripherals just a little to much. It's not any different than any other magazine which often has models laying on fancy cars or motorcycles (and those models likely know absolutely nothing about those cars or motorcycles... but that isn't the point).

It's all about imagination and taboo sexual desires with a magazine like this, just like any other magazine with hot babes to grab the attention of men. I am pretty sure no reasonable person will see this magazine and think this is how all women gamers are like, as it is clearly an eye candy magazine for people who have a thing for hot chicks playing games and fondling controllers.

Although I did know one girl, who I played with on Dust 514 for a couple years, who actually played completely naked a lot of the time. And one night while we were all in a squad, she asked if any of us (aside from her, we were all dudes) played naked as well. She was surprised to find out that, no, we did not. For her to play naked was cute and taboo among all the guy gamers she talks to in the game... but for us dudes, not so much. So maybe that plays into girl gamers doing stuff like this, because they are constantly surrounded by other gamer guys which might turn them on.

People still buy Gaming Magazines?

Ever since gaming magazines with demo disc became irrelevant, magazines with tips/tricks/codes vanished mostly due to DLC, and this thing called the internet happened, I haven't bought a gaming magazine willingly (Thanks GameStop) for nearly a decade. Scratch that, I did buy the final issue of Nintendo Power, but that's it.

Gamer Girls Magazine won't be relevant in t-minus...now.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing57d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9257d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit57d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing57d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9257d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
