Oh 3D, so unready

I just attended this year's eurogamer expo in London and boy oh boy was I excited to play Killzone 3 and GT5 in 3d. I am a loyal ps3 owner, not so much a fanboy, but I do root for Sony... so it pains me to inform the readers of N4G how shockingly underwhelming playing in 3d was. I thought, before I arrived, "potential side-effects, cost and inconvenience of 3d technology in the home be damned, if it's good enough, people will bear the burden, as will I!"

It might not be good enough.

1) The screen is dimmed to the point that I felt a bit depressed playing the game. When I took off the glasses I felt like you might feel if you had been in your room during the day and when the sun falls and you don't realize how dark your room was until someone turns on the light for you. "Ah, that's better!" I thought, "Clarity, once more!"

2) The depth wasn't profound, AT ALL! In a bid to create a subtle 3d effect that doesn't run the risk of offending the potentially queasy masses, Sony has dumbed down the effect so much that, while you notice it, you don't really care all that much. This is disappointing because I once saw just a video of motorstorm pacific rift in 3d one day and it really blew me away, no such feeling in GT5.

3) You can see a faded version of the wrong image half the time. It's very distracting. I thought that this made a bit of sense in the theatre where polarized lenses may yet let a bit of both feeds into each eye (and really, you don't notice it very often), and I was very surprised to see the same effect on the synced glasses (only worse, somehow), because the technology is supposed to close the right eye shutter when the left eye image is being shown. I guess it's a sync problem, and it sucks.

4) Killzone 3 was... it's difficult to describe, but definitely sub HD. There were times where I could have counted the pixels, but this wasn't the case always. The 3d must take a toll on performance and they probably had to cut the res to keep up the rest of the visuals. Also, the controls are still laggy. Maybe less so, but I wish they would stop this ridiculous bid to add more realism to the game. What's so real about me waggling my gun all about helplessly trying to nab headshots, even if it does LOOK weighty? Get over it guerilla, 20 million gamers can't be wrong, just steal what works from modern warfare 2 and swallow your pride.

So there you have it, dark screen, not very exciting, ghosting and sub-hd killzone 3. I was ready to be a very happy camper at the eurogamer expo, and now I'm just disillusioned. What's more, motorstorm apocalypse's graphics blow chunks, and certainly more so in 3d.

I'm afraid all this focus on 3d has distracted Sony from their quite realizable goal of becoming the king of 2d visuals. Someone stop the madness, they say there is yet untapped potential in the cell, and now it's being wasted on this likely fruitless project. Suddenly, the cost and inconvenience (of glasses) are actually sounding like deal breakers.

Public Eye Creators Wolf Games Are Switching To AI-Generated Gaming

When Wolf Games unveiled its debut title Public Eye, the announcement felt less like a routine game launch and more like a signal flare for the future of

The irony is that it's actually humans ruining everything.

ApexLanding236h ago

I will never purchase an AI generated game, I will not contribute to something that takes away artistic human expression and creation in gaming. I'm not one of those people who says, "I hope this fails" like so many often do about everything gaming these days but on this one I have to. AI has it's place, just not here.

That’s It, I’m Calling It, Xbox Is Dead, Time Of Death February 20

If you read Kotaku even semi-regularly, you already know that Xbox has been in a weird spot for some time now. And with today’s news that both Xbox boss Phil Spencer and President Sarah Bond are leaving and the new head of the brand will be a former Meta exec who previously lead Microsoft’s AI division, I think it’s time to call it. Xbox is dead. Time of death: February 20, 2026

God! Xbox dead again! Boring! Boring. Heard it all before.

InUrFoxHole8h ago(Edited 7h ago)

While I normally agree... The future of xbox is on shaky ground. Well, xbox as we know it. Im not sure what they are shooting for but who they put in charge mixed with Phil retiring and bond just flat out leaving. It's not looking good.

REDDURT1h ago

Im with you but in western countries I have noticed a trend to put women in control to prevent any kind of critics.

Levii_929h ago

Oh come on, Xbox has been dead for at least 10 years now. I think what’s more important right now is Playstation’s death that is very slowly but surely happening through mismanagement and greed.

InUrFoxHole8h ago

Some what agree. Sony is in a better position to unf#$k themselves. Xbox isn't.

Levii_924h ago

True i agree with that, xbox's got nothing

ocelot077h ago

I actually agree sooner Hust is gone the better.

He's being clowned on by the entire internet but i have been clowning on him way before he became CEO. I hate modern PS so much man. To this day i have no idea how Astro Bot happend in this terrible PS era but that was clearly a miracle.

Grilla5h ago

Delusional take, why do xbots always project Xbox’s problems onto PlayStation?

0hMyGandhi51m ago(Edited 46m ago)

Respectfully, This is probably one of my least favorite tactics in making an argument.
I'll give you an example: If I like the color red, it doesn't mean I hate the color blue.

People lamenting the (potential) demise of the xbox brand has nothing to do with sony or playstation. It has everything to do with xbox. Now, for the sake of argument, you could say that Sony and Microsoft are two peas in a pod, and that they've both made absolutely baffling and worryingly stupid decisions in the recent past. But I truly believe that Xbox would be shooting itself in the foot regardless of Sony's presence (I look at you, Xbox One reveal with always online DRM and the inability to share games).

Sony, on the other hand, is making stupid decisions to stay competitive with the market, and like Microsoft, is seemingly forcing by proverbial gunpoint talented developers to try to make the next GAAS experience and never learning their lesson. I believe that Microsoft squandering RARE is the equivalent of Sony squandering Naughty Dog. Neither platform really knows what they want to be, BUT Sony is alot further along in figuring it out before Microsoft pulls out another revolver and takes aim at another of it's own toes.

This is why the views and comments are low, with lame articles that use divide-and-conquer pretensions.
