Gaming confessions of an Internet douchebag

Troll. As*hole. Fanboy. Douchey Houser M.D. I’ve heard it all. I’ve
been called it all. And in certain contexts, all apply. First and
foremost, I consider myself a gamer. In that, I play video games. A
lot. Having owned all 3 console this generation (at some point in
time) I love the PlayStation 3. Absolutely love it. From gaming to
movies to music to pictures, a system I once hated and mocked is now the staple of my home entertainment center. And that is where my story begins…

One thing I like to do is review some of my comments on various
gaming sites. Destructoid (pre-ban), Kotaku, Joystiq, N’Gai’s blog at Newsweek and a few others I frequent regularly and (most importantly) comment on. I’ve always been somewhat confrontational and have noticed I have a pretty consistent record for smack talk and PS3 rah-rah. Sometimes (and I stress sometimes) I can be rather level-headed and express myself in non aggressive manner.

Unfortunately, I allow myself more times than not, to be dragged down
into the abyss of irrational thought and fanboy tomfoolery. As with
most gaming sites and blogs today, you must conform to the mob
mentality to ever really be heard. That or just start shit and watch
people’s days implode because they have vested all of their emotions
into a movie or comic or game console. I’m as guilty as the next.

So in my infinite wisdom, I’ve compiled my top 10 truths (or
confessions if you will), regarding my general feelings towards one of
my passions…gaming. Not that anyone cares. And not that I care what
anybody doesn’t…care…about?

1. The Wii isn’t THAT bad. Most of the games ARE.
2. I like the 360. I’d like it more if it worked and didn’t nickel and dime you.
3. Waiting this long for in-game XMB is absurd.
4. If my 360 hadn’t RROD 6 times, it would probably still be primary console.
5. I owned 2 PS3s before keeping the one I currently cherish. One
went to Ebay at launch ($1200 FTW) the other I didn’t want. At the
time, the 360s features were just too much for firmware 1.6. Sorry
Sony.
6. I play more Gamecube games on my Wii than Wii games.
7. I’d like to play any co-op game with Jim Sterling of Destructoid and apologize for taking it too far.
8. Selling an HD gaming console without high def cables is like selling a HD gaming console with a DVD player.
9. Microsoft’s 360 headstart didn’t put them ahead as much as it should.
10. I’m happy Bioshock is coming to the PS3. Not because I like the
game but because it is one less 360 exclusive. There, I said it. You
happy?

They say the first step to recovery is admitting you have a
problem. Seeing how I have no problems to admit to, this recovery stuff
should be smooth sailing.

i commend you for your efforts and change. it's hard for people to realize how they look from someone elses point of view. some people tend to blindly ignore the actions they do and the results it has on others. it's hard for a person to change themselves for the better.

i know because i'm one who has changed. not in this whole fanboy gaming thing but in my past life and personality outside of the internet.

i'll admit i'm more loyal to the PS3 than all other platforms but i'm not blind or ignorant because of this. i can appreciate the good in other platforms. most of the fanboyish talk i make in forums is, for the most part, just for comical relief but i do realize that some people don't see it that way or have thought i meant it that way because some of the things i post is can not be clearly made out to look anything humorous to the opposing side.

anyway, i'm glad that you've made amends with yourself and hope this will make gaming more enjoyable for you.

Thanks man. I was just thinking about the "big picture" and I just feel a re-evaluation was needed. I make jokes and will continue to do so, but the crazy fanboy "you said something bad about MY console, so I'll say something even more stupid" days are over. I love gaming. And I finally remembered that.

I actually thought about doing a confessions of a fanboy blog too. I started on this site as a douchy 360 fanboy but have reformed myself. I think most balanced human beings would change once you see the company you've put yourself in by being a blind fanboy. There are some hardcore brand worshipers on this site and I didn't want to be in their league.

I too was sort of disappointed with the PS3 at launch but its really proven itself over time. It started with the DVD upscale FW update and kept going to 2.4 FW update. Although I still lean toward the 360 I do it for less compelling reasons. Soon as the PS3 gets real voice chat, auto shut down after downloads/charging controllers and the video store its going to be hard to lean 360. They'll both be equal features wise.

Great time to be a cross platform gamer.

Good blog.. Nice to see some honestly about personal bias. Everyone has it. Might as well be upfront about it. As long as you have real reasons for leaning one way or the other your okay with me. What I hate is the fanboys that have no reason other than blind emotion.
