Gaming Consoles and Handhelds as service endpoints

Sony removing the Linux option from its PS3 console shows the short sighted vision that SCE has adopted in recent years. Instead of leading the way through innovation it has decided to follow it's competitor's (Microsoft' XBOX 360) closed network philosophy and try to squeeze consumers for ever red cent.

Gaming consoles are becoming a log jam to innovation for Gaming Developers and the Gaming Industry. With longer development cycles and fewer options for upstarts, the console is headed for disaster. Consumers are the ones who are losing the most. Instead of being able choose preferred services and destinations for our consoles for nominal fees, we are stuck with cable company like packaged deals. Handheld devices are providing an example of the way forward. If Sony were to continue in leading the way by recognizing the delima of the console. It would free up the industry and push interactive entertainment services in a whole new direction.

Sony, if you have difficulty understanding what I'm saying, look at Apple. It will soon have various options consumers can choose from to get services they desire. E.g. Apple TV, iPhone, iPod. These devices aren't preloaded with a bunch of stuff the consumer doesn't need. I think the controversy is as plain as day.

You too Microsoft, the package model is totally not the way to go.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit8h ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
