What's Next For Uncharted? Sequels, Spin Off's And Split Timelines

Ever since the release of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End many gamers have been wondering what would be next for the highly popular franchise after finishing NaughtyDogs final Uncharted game. Opinions have been split on the subject, while some gamers would want the franchise to end on a good note others would like to see it continue in some form but regardless of what happens next one thing we do know for sure is that NaughtyDog will have no part of it. In the end the franchise will literally be sailing in uncharted waters.

So where should the Uncharted franchise venture to next? One idea that’s been floating around is that it will continue with Nathan and Elena’s daughter Cassie as the leading role. This would certainly be a good idea considering they could still carry on the “Drake” name which is featured in some of the Uncharted titles like “Drakes Fortune” and “Drakes Deception since NaughtyDog has carried a small theme with the franchises titles where every odd numbered game starts with “Drake” and the even numbered games has the word “Thief” in them. Perhaps the next game of the franchise starring Cassie could be called “Drakes Legacy” and would feature a much older Cassie, possibly the same age as Nate in Drakes Fortune, stepping into her father’s shoes. However the small downside to this is that it would feature a female lead, and this obviously isn’t a problem, of course not it’s not like the world thinks of us gamers as sexist misogynist’s right? The small problem I see from the franchises point of view would that it would relate the franchise more to Tomb Raider which is also a third person action adventure platforming game with a female lead. In my opinion I feel like whoever continues Uncharted in the future would want the two games to be as separate as possible so Cassie might not be a good fit.

The other idea floating around suffers a similar problem as it would be to continue the franchise with Chloe Frazer another female lead but considering Chloe is an established character where people already know how different she is to Lara Croft and one who was not featured in the last Uncharted game she would be a welcome addition in the next instalment and is an idea I feel is the most fitting. Chloe has very similar traits to Nate and would reflect on what Nate would have been a little like before Drakes Fortune where he met his future wife Elena Fisher, someone who is on their own, doing it for riches and is not settled down with someone they care about. Her partner in crime would be another absent character in Uncharted 4, Charlie Cutter and could fill in Sully’s role as her back up. The pair of them together could feature some great banter and would give us more information on their past since the other games hardly went into their backstories at all. How did Chloe and Cutter meet? How did Cutter meet Nate? Were their other jobs in between the other games? This game could allow us to learn more about the Uncharted Universe as it shifts away from Nathan Drake. Uncharted: Frazer’s Fortune anyone?

In my opinion continuing on from the last Uncharted game might end up degrading the games NaughtyDog have done if the quality after Uncharted 4 drops. I don’t think any developer should tip toe on the legacy a highly respected studio like NaughtyDog have done with the past 4 Uncharted games, similar to how Konami will end up continuing the Metal Gear Solid games without Kojima. However there might be a way to overcome this without tip toeing on the studios past games or going down the drastic reboot path so many developers do these days and that would be to split the timeline after Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. What? Why? How? I know what you’re thinking but let me explain. Nathan Drakes backstory didn’t really expand until the third game in Drakes Deception where we were treated to flashbacks for the first time of a teenage Nate and this backstory also evolved more in A Thief’s End when you found out he magically had a brother he thought was dead, also giving us more flashbacks. In the first two Uncharted games Nathan Drakes backstory is pretty much sealed only giving us tiny amounts of information to go on like when Flynn and Chloe are introduced so making the mark to split the franchises timeline after Uncharted 2 would make the most sense.

Telling an alternate timeline from this point would also not tip toe on the ending the main developers gave the franchise. If you decide to make another Uncharted game and continue on from Uncharted 4 whether it’s with Cassie or god forbid Nate himself them you are not respecting the previous developers work. At least with splitting the timeline you are respecting that while also bringing back our main characters in a non-forced scenario, to them the last adventure was Among Thieves and they would still be younger then what we saw in A Thief’s End. The other benefits of this is that it gives the new studio more creative control and lets them come up with a new backstory for Nate or let them add things which won’t contradict things found within NaughtyDogs other two sequels. Maybe in this new “third” game Marlowe isn’t a threat (yet) and also Nate doesn’t have a brother, he’s an only child as stated in previous games. Whatever it is this would allow the new developers to create a new game without worrying what they can and cannot do.

I think it would be a fantastic idea if in this new “third” game would see Nate, Elena and Sully go after Atlantis, something fans have wanted to see for a while when it came to guessing where Nate could go in the next game. Since the real third game Drakes Deception saw Nate go after the Atlantis of the sands then the alternative “third” game could see him find the Atlantis of the ocean. Maybe we’ll see a game finally where Nate and Elena go off on the adventure together instead of being split up at the start of the game or Elena getting into a huff with Nate because he’s adventuring again. It would be a nice take on the couple to see them as husband and wife go after a treasure together along with Sully. In the end this idea of the splitting the timeline would allow them to create more games without actually ending the franchise for good. The real ending, the one NaughtyDog has done for their creation is still there, that book is closed and no one will ever be able to open back up to ruin it so if anything bad happens to the new timeline then NaughtyDog would have nothing to worry about. At the end of the day at least this franchise would allow our favourite characters come back without a new studio trying to force in newer characters, I mean let’s be honest here Nate, Elena and Sully are the faces on the franchise, just like how Lara Croft is the face of Tomb Raider, without them the franchise is nothing.

What do you think? Where do you think the Uncharted franchise to venture off next? Do you want to see the franchise continue with Cassie or Chloe? Or would you like to see a split timeline telling alternative adventures with our same beloved characters? Maybe you could see a re-telling of the franchise from the start, same characters, and a similar story. Nate might meet Elena Fisher but what if it’s not for Sir Francis Drake’s coffin but something else for another adventure? Hell what if they don’t even meet on a boat but in the middle of a dessert and they are raided by mercenaries not pirates? The possibilities are endless because Nathan Drake is a man of many adventures and has so many choices to pick from, there are worlds where he picked other adventures before another and I for one would think it would be great to see these other adventures played out in games which show alternative takes on the franchise.

Naughty Dogs said that this was their last Uncharted. So it gonna be a long time for the series to wake up again. For now, let it rest.

-Foxtrot3511d ago (Edited 3511d ago )

I did make it clear in the blog post that NaughtyDog were finished and I was talking about the new studio who will take over

Literally the first paragraph

"one thing we do know for sure is that NaughtyDog will have no part of it"

EDIT

@ Below

"I don't wanna see any Uncharted from another studio"

The problem is it's going to happen whether we like it or not, just like how we don't want Konami continuing MGS without Kojima, in the end it's going to happen. We can't stop it.

TwoForce3511d ago

I agree on that. But for now, let it rest until Uncharted need a fresh start.

joab7773511d ago

Either way, I don't wanna see any Uncharted from another studio.

Barricade3511d ago

How do you know it's going to happen? Where's that crystal ball? Maybe Sony will let it rest for a while until they decide it's time to bring it back. All of Sony studios are busy creatief their own games.

And to say Naughty Dog will have no part in it is a big thing to say. Do you think Naughty Dog won't have anything to do with the game when it comes back? They were invested in the vita game too you know. When they say it's gotta be like that, it'll be like that. So yeah, so much for your first paragraph.

-Foxtrot3511d ago

@Barricade

Come on...I mean really...come on man. Whether it happens in the next 3 years or 6 it's going to happen.

To say a huge franchise like Uncharted will not be continued by someone else is silly beyond belief. It's brought so much money in for Sony and is such a popular franchise that there is no way Sony won't continue it in some shape or form.

As for the Vita game, from what I've read and seen they had some involvement but it was very little...even then this was during the time NaughtyDog were still doing Uncharted games and with the PSV Uncharted game being so big for Sony at the start of the PSV life cycle they were probably told to have a little involvement. Now they are finished they probably just want to focus on the Last of Us and creating a new franchise. So yeah I'll proudly stick by that first paragraph.

I mean look at God of War, you could have ended it at the third one but because it's so popular he's coming back. Ratchet and Clank is another one, it's such a big franchise it got a re-telling to start off a new line of games.

freshslicepizza3511d ago

foxtrot is right, it most always boils down to money and they will not let this ip sit. the same thing is happening with god of war. it's too valuable even without naughty dog making a new one. i bet they will offer some assistance so they can still market naughty dog.

ginsunuva3510d ago

Sony won't even continue Crash or Jak no matter how much fans ask for it. They realize when enough's enough even if fans are too blinded by nostalgia.

It hit me yesterday, the only reason i really got a ps4 was for uncharted. If ND doesnt do another uncharted i wont feel the need for another playstation console. Kinda made me sad. Uncharted is beast!

Rude-ro3511d ago

If they would do another, I would want it to be a prequel with their mother and her adventures.
Going back in time would be awesome and add more elements that can be exciting rather than the future with the daughter.

-Foxtrot3511d ago (Edited 3511d ago )

The thing is his mother seemed more by the book and didn't really get into the situations Nate did so it wouldn't be very Uncharted like.

Besides I think games need to stop with prequels, move the franchise forward, don't hold onto the past

Only prequel I'd like to see is a Sully prequel or inter prequels between Uncharted and Uncharted 2 and between Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 3

EDIT @Below

Yeah but what little we had in Uncharted 4 did point to that.

Evelyn was a colleague of their mother, considering the things saw in Evelyns manor and the more formal diaries she kept she seemed to be more professional compared to Nate. That's where Nate ends up in the end when he starts his own business with Elena, he becomes more legit and professional like his mother.

Rude-ro3511d ago

I disagree. You said seem, that is just your take on the very little info.
Going back in time makes the game more rugged and more challenging instead of the future which would tech savvy hand holders. Personalities would be different as well. Instead of cheesy quips and such and headphones and stuff, you would have more of a sophisticated educated grounded person.
"Prequel" only comes into play if it were the same protagonist and it would not be but her adventures leading to having children and choosing between them and her career leading to her mysterious death would be an awesome story.
To each their own. With tomb raider playing how it is, And if they were to do something with the uncharted, that would be the best bet at keeping it massively seperated from TR

I hadn't seen your comment when I made mine but those are my thoughts exactly. You could tell the story of how & why Nate's mother & father gave them up for adoption, likely due to some threat from a rival treasure hunter.

As far as the personalities you guys mention, I'd see it like this...Nate has 2 aspects that are always at conflict inside him, the happy go lucky adventurous treasure hunter, and the grounded brainy historian. This prequel would essentially show where those 2 aspects came from, his mother the grounded historian & his father the swashbuckling adventurer. That'd make for some great play between the two, and it's rife for good comedy & drama. The original Uncharted franchise was centered around the importance of family, this prequel could go further back & examine the effect of that importance and really focus in on the idea of Nature vs. Nurture. Even though Nate never met his parents, a game like this could illustrate that these ideas are already in his blood. It kinda turns his family into the dynasty that he always fantasized about, even w/o the Francis Drake connection.

To me, it's the most obvious story rife w/ the most potential. I personally don't care if a property goes sequel, prequel, interquel, or full out reboot, all that matters is the story being told. There is enough mystery w/ Drake's parents & early years for characters like Sully or Marlowe (or any other villain for that matter) that the stakes will still be there.

ninsigma3511d ago

I'd like to see a game with Cassie as the lead but not as the same age as Nate. Would like to see her more in her late teens just getting into her own groove as an adventurer following in her parents footsteps. Not really a fan of the split timeline idea tbh.

rainslacker3511d ago (Edited 3511d ago )

I dunno about her being a teenager. Think that would just end up too much like some teen melodrama, and be hard to really take seriously given the gun play and what not. I mean origin stories are nice and all, but realistically, given how she was portrayed in UC4, could you see her taking up arms against mobs of mercenaries? The only way I can see it making it's way through the story is becoming a Dora the Explorer all grown up type of game, and that wouldn't be that appealing.(BTW, check out College Humors Dora the Explorer movie parodies).

Maybe early twenties after college, where she's been an explorer for a while(as shown in UC4 magazine cover). Something could drive her to be more like her dad. OTOH, that would come across too much like the TR reboot, so maybe not all that great....although I'm sure the characters and story would be more compelling.

That being said, split time line I'm not for at all. There's no real need for it given that the story can be insular from one another. Alternate time lines to me are more the easy mode for story tellers to ignore any and all cannon, and just make sh*t up as they go along.

gamerswin243511d ago

Spin off with daughter would be dope

Jayszen3511d ago

I think that the franchise should continue after a suitable break and should focus on another character, be it Chloe or someone entirely new or even on Drake's daughter as the new generation with Drake as her 'Sully'. 'Uncharted' as a title signifies something undiscovered, unexplored, even mythical and as an adventure game needs someone as charismatic as Drake to be the lead character but other than that, the rest is really down to the imagination of the writers and developers. Sony has several studios which could take over 'Uncharted' from Naughty Dog, particularly Sony Bend, Sucker Punch and Guerilla.

rainslacker3511d ago

I can't see Drake being her Sully. As much as he was excited to tell her his stories, I can't see him enabling his daughter to go off and do what he does. Elena definitely wouldn't be for it. Maybe if they changed the nature of the game, and removed the gun play, but then that makes it questionable if they could make it like an UC game.

I dunno, there are story contrivances they could use to make it seem realistic, but it seems like they'd be forcing it into a place where it just doesn't fit. Something new, with new characters seems more apt, although Cassie could be considered a new main character. Sure the Drake, Sully, and Elena cameos could be pretty good.
