Epic Games implies that Unreal Engine 4 will not be on Wii U

XMNR: Epic Games is working on Unreal Engine 4, it's next-gen game engine for the PC and consoles. While many expect it to show up on the Playstation 4 and next Xbox, a statement from CEO Tim Sweeney in an interview released on Monday appears to imply that it won't be available for Nintendo's upcoming Wii U console.

Wonder if this one is because the Wii U isn't powerful enough for them, or it's because of Epic Games just being anti-Nintendo. Maybe a little bit of both? If that's the case, that's not good news for either companies.

After Wii, Nintendo has a lot of damage control. But if 3rd party devs don't try to fix things too, then gamers lose.

StraightedgeSES5138d ago

Epic said the Wii u was powerful because it can run current engines on higher settings than the ps3 and 360

tigertron5138d ago

The Wii U is more powerful than the PS3 and the 360 but compared to next-gen consoles? unlikely, hence UE4 probably won't be available for it.

Diver5138d ago (Edited 5138d ago )

well whoever wrote this article needs to quit writing. sweeney was saying epic haven't announced what platforms the Unreal 4 engine will be on. he isn't saying the platforms themselves haven't been announced. hell the pc has been announced. does that mean u4 isn't coming to it? english dude simple English. u4 is coming to the wii u.

stragomccloud5138d ago

It can run UE3 way better than PS360 but, this is about UE4. Honestly even if there is a big powerful diff between ps4/720 and Wii U, and I don't expect one, tne should run fine at lower resolution.

DeadlyFire5129d ago

I want to point this out to you guys.

In this article it says. The intended platforms for our engine have not been announced. Pretty bad attempt at attacking the WiiU I say. Epic is just stating that they have not announced their intended platforms. All the optimization talk they were talking about before. It makes it very possible for Unreal 4 to run on WiiU even if it snips a few things around the edges to make it work it will still be pretty damn impressive.

RedDead5138d ago

YOu wouldn't expect it too, it's for next gen consoles, not this gen with a little more power

sinclaircrown5138d ago

The current gen is last gen with some more power... Its kinda how they go.

OpenGL5138d ago

Initially Epic stated that they intended to skip graphics APIs like DirectX and OpenGL entirely and would instead write a rendering pipeline that uses OpenCL or DirectCompute. If this were truly the case the Wii U wouldn't be able to handle the engine because the compute functionality of the Radeon 4000 series is extremely limited in comparison to later AMD and Nvidia GPUs.

ChickeyCantor5138d ago

Im not sure why people think that UE4 compared to UE3 needs a cluster of super computers to work.

Sure the specification requirements might be higher, but lets not pretend the PS3/360 are running the UE3 on full settings.

stuntman_mike5138d ago

I think they are taking that statement abit too literal.

legend9115138d ago

The Wii U probably isn't the flagship so that is what they are talking about. Yet another article looking for hits. :/

shackdaddy5138d ago

Intended and supported are two completely different things. UE4 might not be intended for the wiiu but it will support it. Just like how UE3 isn't intended for ios even though it supports it...

LOL_WUT5138d ago

I wonder who's going to try and spin this that Unreal Engine 4 isn't needed.

Anyways this sucks for Nintendo but i guess we all saw it coming, all i have to say is step your game up Nintendo!

Machioto5138d ago

The unreal engine isn't needed.

PopRocks3595138d ago

The article is contradictory to an earlier article I read that suggested that Unreal Engine 4 could be down-scaled for Wii U. I'll give you the link before you call BS.

http://www.nintengen.com/20...

Also, I read the article and this appears to be taken out of context. Epic said that the intended consoles have not been announced. This can go the way you believe, but I see this more along the lines of "We have not yet announced what consoles this is meant for."

Disney Should Buy Fortnite And Epic Games, Former Exec Says

The Walt Disney Company's new CEO, Josh D'Amaro, is a big fan of video games, and one former Disney executive believes D'Amaro would be smart to do even more in gaming going forward. This could include a buyout of a gaming company like Epic Games.

In an interview with CNBC, Kevin Mayer--a former Disney and TikTok executive who now runs Candle Media--said D'Amaro will need to take "bold steps" to help Disney make more money and grow its stock price. One part of this could be doing more in gaming, he said.

Apparently nobody remembers the absolute shitshow that happened when EA brought the Havok engine which was used as the default engine of the 6th generation like UE is used today.

SkilledGamer63d ago

You've got it wrong, EA bought Renderware not Havok. Havok was bought by Intel in 2007 and then Microsoft in 2015

Fishy Fingers63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

Nor was it ever a widely used or considered, game engine, Renderware was. It was and still is a physics/material simulation plugin for the actual game engines.

Profchaos63d ago

Yeah you're right i was thinking of Renderware. But point still stands Renderware was used literally everywhere from games like GTA 3,VC,SA to Sonic games and Tony hawk it was really the default industry wide engine that UE is today.

If Disney takes over Epic and UE we could face a situation where they change the terms of use for other game devs big and small. They could remove the licensing agreements currently in place and impose a payment per download model like Unity did which could cripple the industry.

TOTSUKO63d ago

Fck Disney stock and their shareholders.

blacktiger63d ago

Well I can imagine DIsney with their transgender Snowwhite and black cinderally and mermaid and other garbage. Imagine video games lmao!!!

rlow163d ago

I really hope this doesn’t happen. They ruin everything that they buy. Terrible company

Zerobalance63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

Trolling. Hope Disney take the Maval characters like Spider-Man and Wolverine away from Sony and make it themselves that would me laugh so hard.

"It is going to get so much worse in the video game industry...This will get worse and going to be bad and it's going to eventually get better." -Greg Miller right before it got worse

Agent7565d ago

Too many games, too many versions, download only games, game pricing, £700+ consoles, eye watering prices for controllers, four formats, gaming is one big mess.

gold_drake65d ago

id argue that epic games has alot of other revenue income other than fortnite, so their reasoning makes zero sense.
