What's next for Microsoft's Xbox?

Victor Godinez writes:

"Who's ready to start talking about the next Xbox?

Yeah, I know, it sounds idiotic -- didn't the 360 just come out? But one glance at a calendar suggests it won't be long before we start hearing all sorts of tidbits about the Xbox 720.

After all, the original Xbox came out in the fall of 2001.

The Xbox 360 was released in 2005.

Repeating that four-year lifespan, the 720 (or whatever it ends up being called) should come out, um, let's see, next year!

To be fair, Microsoft executives have said they envision a longer life for the 360 than the original Xbox enjoyed. And the 360 will easily break the sales totals of the original Xbox (at least outside Japan), so it makes sense to keep the platform alive as long as possible. After all, the second half of a console's life cycle is its most profitable, because the cost of assembling what was once cutting-edge hardware has declined dramatically."

2008 spells a fiscal year of doom for Microsoft's XBOX 360. 2007 seen a year where alleged "AAA" titles have failed to meet expectations and Microsoft further digging themselves into financial debt due to poor manufacturing of their consoles, and an unstable online network. The only solution that Microsoft has issued at this point is to transmit mysterious signals to the brainwaves of XBox slaves to amass falsified facts on what is a garbage console underneath.

In the first two weeks of 2008, PLAYSTATION® 3 has received more positive news going foward than XBOX 360 has during it's entire run. Sony Playstation has a successful track record of providing customers with undeniable AAA exclusives that can not be found on any other console. Gamers do not want garbage, which is why XBOX 360 has garnered the image of being the ignorance of the world as we speak.

I wouldn't predict doom and gloom for Microsoft in 2008. They're making inroads with the 360 platform. As much as I love my 360 I don't think that Microsoft is going to come out as number 1 this time around, but I do predict that over the next few years they'll give Sony a run for their money.

I think the question of the "Xbox 720" is a catch 22 for Microsoft. If they do it, thereby pissing off most current 360 owners, they're doomed.

If they don't do it, the PS3 will show just out outclassed the 360 is more and more, as it's already doing and it's doomed again.

This is a conundrum that Microsoft must deal with for getting their system out so early.

As consols get more experncive, they need to have longer life spans. Its simple. Im thinking it will be 6-7 years.

Richie, you make me chuckle. Bubble for you :-D DarkSniper's post is very fanboyish. There is nothing wrong with liking a console but there is no need to make up junk about a competing console. The whole news statement made me laugh.

Dark Sniper would like to take a moment and apologize to his fellow N4G members and gamers for his recent and ongoing trolling of the forums. Dark Sniper was simply trying to show others the light at the end of the tunnel, which was the PLAYSTATION® 3 Home Entertainment Console. Dark Sniper truly believed that it was the best current-gen console available.

However, after getting an XBOX 360 as a Christmas gift, Dark Sniper has changed his opinion of the previously-ridiculed console. The sheer number of wonderful AAA titles, combined with the best controls, and topped off by the award-winning XBOX LIVE service has swayed Sniper to the dark side.

After playing both the PLAYSTATION® 3 Home Entertainment Console and the XBOX 360 side by side, Dark Sniper would like to congratulate Microsoft Corporation and its affiliated game developers for bringing us such wonderful products, that not only compete, but exceed anything that Sony has developed so far.

In conclusion, Dark Sniper would like to reiterate that no matter what side you are on in the console war, this is truly a great time to be a gamer.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
