Playing Earthbound for the First Time: Discussion 1

RPG Land: "As Janelle treks through Xenogears, Heath has his first go at Earthbound." Heath and Janelle each picked a game that they have finished, but the other has never played. The two are posting an ongoing series of impressions and discussions. Last time, Xenogears was discussed at length. Now it's Earthbound's turn/

I'm interested in this. I have never played earthbound myself but on my big to do list.

damn good game. One of the best games for the SNES.

Very disappointed that the sequel never can to N64.

kamanashi5140d ago

I was disappointed about that as well at first, but the GBA Mother 3 is leagues better than what the N64 one would have been. Has nice graphics, a good story, great gameplay, plus, it's portable.

You can download the english patch for the ROM at http://mother3.fobby.net/

one of the best games ive ever played. Honestly ive played earthbound at least 20 times. Yes a 100+ hour game over 20 times. A true earthbound 2 would be a potential wii u seller for me if they were to make it!

You should give Mother 3 a try with the English patch the other poster linked above.
Earthbound is the second game in the "Mother" series; it was called "Mother 2" in Japan. Mather 3 *is* Earthbound 2, were it to be released outside of Japan. Great game.

Immediately thought of the El Dorado zombie dudes in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

Not necessarily a ‘horror’ moment, but I remember feeling really tense and anxious when the Flood were first introduced in the original Halo. I never felt more on edge or nervous in that whole game as that moment. I think it was the whole buildup that something terrible was coming but you didn’t know exactly what.

Another non-horror game that had me feeling it was Subnautica. The deep dark depths, and knowing that sea monsters were lurking nearby, had me jumping at every sound.

That scene where you first see them attack is pretty crazy!

I remember being scared of the Asylum level in the most recent Thief game from 2014.

Earthbound Creator Says Nintendo Considered Mother 3 Translation, But It Was Complicated

IGN writes: Mother 3 is one of the most hotly-desired RPGs ever, having never received an official translation in North America despite the cult popularity of its predecessor, Earthbound. But over all these years, series creator Shigesato Itoi has never weighed in on the discussion - at least until now."

They should remake Earthbound, and bring it to modern platforms.

meganick907d ago

A translated version of this game on Switch Online would be nice, and it would add a lot value to the Expansion Pak service.

Bring it already. Nintendo is frustrating at times

I would love to see an Earthbound game just redone with 3D-ish models and characters. Just having a remaster for Switch Online would be awesome!

FinalFantasyFanatic907d ago

Did you ever see the Earthbound 64 concept/materials? That actually looked really good, but I'd also take a HD-2D remake as well.

FinalFantasyFanatic907d ago

Nintendo seems very whimsical about what they give they're fans, sometimes they'll give them a bone (e.g. Mario RPG, Thousand Year Door for the Switch), and other times, they just give them little to nothing (agh, the Zelda anniversary).

When you consider the cost of gaming back then and even now, no excuses when costs are involved.
