Intel Ivy Bridge Spec Comparison for Gaming

Gamers Nexus: "Gaming enthusiasts should be most interested in the i5-3570k and i7-3770k, but the other CPUs are still solid (the S-line is optimized for lowest power consumption, making it a good candidate for HTPCs). Because this is a gaming website, we’ll focus down on the i5-3570k vs. 3770k and see which is best for gaming."

I wouldn't recommend anyone on SB to even bother with Ivy Bridge

5yN4MWQU5189d ago

It's a tick. I personally wait for tocks to upgrade.

ProjectVulcan5189d ago (Edited 5189d ago )

Seems like the earliest steppings don't overclock quite as well as Sandy bridge. Probably due to a fair bit of leakage on the new 22nm process.

Generally it seems the Sandy Bridge stuff can do 3-400mhz MORE stable, although of course they use more power.

This extra speed is enough to mostly eliminate the small gains from architecture tweaks in Ivy bridge.

Of course tou want the newer processors if you are building fresh, but if you have a Sandy is it pretty much pointless to upgrade.

If you are a gamer save it for Haswell next year, or spend it on a better GPU

Kaizin5145189d ago

Only reason I would pick up Ivy Bridge is if I also pick up a PCI-E 3.0 motherboard, with one of the new GTX 600 cards that supports 3.0. Other than that, I do agree to just wait on Ivy Bridge and see what Haswell can offer us.

5yN4MWQU5189d ago

Yeah, it seems that IB has some voltage leaking issues. If money allows, I'm a huge fan of the enthusiast lines (the X-series chipsets), but otherwise I agree: wait on Haswell if you are already on SB. Honestly, though, even SB should be solid for another few years. The only real reason to upgrade (as ever) is boredom or obsolescence, the latter takes forever for CPUs.

Velox5189d ago

Then again, I wouldnt recomend anyone toget intel

Velox5189d ago

Piledriver will blow this out of the water. Anyone who waits will get much more bang for th buck

ProjectVulcan5189d ago (Edited 5189d ago )

Dream on. Intel have held the CPU performance lead for 6 years now, AMD can't get close to them in a whole bunch of attempts.

Bulldozer is alright when you run massively threaded apps, but the fact is, most apps are still only 2 or 4 threads, not even 6. Intel generally wins so easily with fewer threads, and when it does lose to bulldozer in very threaded stuff, it is only pretty small.

Sandy bridge is easily faster per clock than AMD too. Meaning when they overclock to the same speeds roughly, it gains even more.

Ivy Bridge was actually ready end of last year, but delayed instead of rushed simply because AMD posed no real threat to Sandy bridge's crown.

The fact is the top end bulldozer (FX-8170) may be cancelled as well or at least respun and delayed. It is clear AMD are still struggling getting their architectures working right first time.

Ivy bridge will still hold the performance crown just because software is still not really ready for 8 cores and 16+ threads. This time next year Haswell will arrive too, and it'll be much faster than Ivy bridge from what has been leaked.

hiredhelp5189d ago (Edited 5189d ago )

Yur dead right software mainly games not ready for 8 cores let alone 6.

Johnny_Cojones5189d ago

AMD fan(atic)s tend to be a bit delusional.

The TRUTH is that even an Intel i3 2100 is a better overall gaming CPU than AMDs top chip.

The tiny bit of money I'd save going with AMD isn't worth being saddled with a CPU that will bottleneck my GPUs.

SkullBlade1695188d ago

Lol I used to really like my AMD processor but their newer CPUs have been so bad I went ahead and switched to Intel. If you think that AMD is going to crush Intel with a new CPU release soon you're sadly mistaken, AMD has completely lost the ball atm.

hiredhelp5189d ago (Edited 5189d ago )

Nothin wrong with intel velox used intel on 95% all my customer builds and my own.
They got more versatile over the years where amd have now finally given into the desktop market cpu's that sais in itself that they cant keep up with intel.
They offer great value there cpu by no means crap but in todays gen of cpu's theyve never really manage to keep up with intel technology in making users pushing cpu's further than before.
Only con with intel can be argued The Price. But when company has the monopoly what do you expect, motherboards only a matter of time since they got n tere m sure wont be long before they do memory too.

You have the right to not recommend intel but i would choose them every time.
As for the article well i got i7 2600k i do need a pci 3.0 board i could get sandy bridge but then again could get pci 3.0 sandy bridge 1155 sell my p67 asrock.
It benifit my 7970 but same time 2.0 runs fine fluid on any game no issues maybe get 3.0 when windows 8 launched with dx11.1

LordAtrocity5189d ago

I'm hapy with my i7 2600k, tho you might as well go with ivy bridge over sandy if you really want to build a build now.

Plagasx5188d ago (Edited 5188d ago )

Luckily for me, I'm still on an i7 920.

The time has come :)

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio75d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing75d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9275d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit75d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing75d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9275d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
