How Halo 3 Changed Game Development

Scottish journalist William Lyon MacKenzie once said, "The promises of yesterday are the taxes of today."

Never has this been truer than with Halo 3, the eagerly anticipated Xbox 360 game developed by Bungie Studios and published by Microsoft. The promises of yesterday, especially from the first installment of the series, came in the form of an arresting storyline, a powerful new hardware system, tremendous scope in terms of visual panoramas, and a complete set of game modes, as well as fabulous multiplayer action.

Based on Halo's runaway success, the paradigm for a successful video game studio -- and its relationship to its publisher -- may never be the same again.

It'll be a long time before they come out with a game that has half as many features that Halo 3 did

X_GAMER_X6709d ago

Me, As a FPS I found that Halo has always brought something new to the FPS marked.
I have played the most FPS games, ANd I like most of them but..Halo has its feeling.

Halo is the only campaign game that a finished 100 times And I find that funny every time.

mintaro6708d ago

halo has always brought the best towards the FPS genre

moses6708d ago

I agree with all the posts above, but really, the disagrees in this are ridiculous.

ArmrdChaos6708d ago

Must be the same guy with his 5 accounts.

bootsielon6708d ago (Edited 6708d ago )

What's ridiculous is that people actually think it's an innovative game, and that its gameplay is the best. It seems that these people were born after Halo, as they don't know anything before that. Furthermore, it seems as if it was the only thing they played, as they don't know anything after that. It's all "Halo this, halo that". Microsoft are genius marketers, but not genius developers. Half-Life, GoldenEye, Crysis, Duke Nukem 3D, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Black, Far Cry, Bioshock, COD4, Counter-Strike, Gears of War.... I mean seriously, you have to admit Halo 3 is way overhyped for what it truly is: A mainstream, risk free approach to FPS.

Edit:

So I get minus bubble for stating my opinion... 6 agrees, 6 disagrees. It seems that not everyone agrees with you. Just for stating that I deserve less bubbles for simply stating my opinion, everyone should return YOU the favor.

Oh, and to the "failure" below toughNAME, I guess everyone has to agree with you, don't you? Amusing xbots, not quite as intelligent as morons.

Seriously guys, you are saying "Halo is innovative", but you haven't really backed it up yet. I don't deny MGS4 and Killzone are hyped, but MGS has always lived up to the hype (not so with Killzone).

The funny thing is that you guys label this site as a PS3 fansite even though your lot considers me sacrilegious for "insulting" halo by calling it "not innovative". I never said it wasn't good.

"fileshare, replay feature, metagame, map editor AND name a game that comes close to Halo 3's party system"

All of this has existed before on many PC games and a few console games, don't make yourself look like you have only played Halo in your life. Wow, so now Halo used everything that was made before on PC and put it all together instead of separate games. That IS innovative. Hey, you know what would be really innovative? Putting every possible game mechanic and mode on a single game!! WOW EAT THAT HALO 3!

moses6708d ago

Look at the massive amount of hype on this site on MGS4 and Killzone 2, especially Killzone 2 which is based upon nothing. I'm not saying it won't live up to the hype, but there sure is a ton of it.

toughNAME6708d ago

minus bubble...I dont usually take bubbles for peoples opinions but you cant just deny facts

name 1 game that has a fileshare, replay feature, metagame, map editor AND name a game that comes close to Halo 3's party system?

Opinions are fine...but your just making yourself look like an idiot

BloodySinner6708d ago

Don't worry about it, man. This failure is just in denial.

That's Microsoft's gaming division for you...kill off developers making new ip while trying to capitalize off some long lost glory that has no hope of ever being what it once was thanks to recent decision making favoring unrealistic profit goals and greed. What a joke.

Reaper22_204d ago

So much bitterness. Why be upset over something like this. Just don't buy it and stick with what you prefer.

Tacoboto204d ago

Complaining about Microsoft is the only thing people comment here for anymore.

This website is practically dead without it

Mmmkay203d ago

I remember when you guys constantly complained about Sony remaking and remastering games. Guess it is cool now. As usual.

thesoftware730203d ago

Give it rest medman..., take a deep breath and try to not sound so invested in something no one is forcing you to read, buy, or play.

"Console war"is over, Sony won, be happy.

medman199d ago (Edited 199d ago )

@thesoftware730
I'm invested in people losing their jobs and their livelihoods while Microsoft execs tout record profits for their gaming division. Not sure why you wouldn't be invested. Could be you one day. Good luck.

Travesty204d ago

So what’s their solution to having multiplayer? Wait until Halo 7?
That was one of the most memorable parts of Halo..

monkey602204d ago

I'm not sure spending the heavy investment in time to recreate the multiplayer here is the answer either though.
Remaking the campaigns is a great idea to bring the new players up to speed. But if the multiplayer is included in each it'll just fracture the player base of each release.
I think it might be better to turn these campaigns out quicker and have 1 multiplayer game to keep everyone in one place

Travesty204d ago

Maybe having an Halo Online and just release the Combat Evolve maps. And when Halo 2 releases have those maps release. I don’t know but I would like to play a newer version of Halo multiplayer. I know times have changed, and Fortnite is all younger kids really play. But back then it was Halo and you connecting 6 Xbox’s together lol.

jjb1981204d ago

I agree. I think that'll segment the playerbase and once 7 comes out, players might realize it sucks and go back to the older games. Especially if 7 is live-servixe, they'll be shooting themselves in the foot on the one good leg they have to stand on.

crazyCoconuts204d ago

Kinda surprised they didn't just port MCC.
Maybe more $ to by made with separate remasters

Inverno204d ago

Wouldn't have that problem if it were MCC being released. Gotta wait for 7 to be disappointed with MP all over again cause if they half baked Infinite what makes people think they won't half bake the next game? MP works in past HALO games not cause of nostalgia but because it's MP that isn't concerned with the endless service approach.

JEECE203d ago

There is so much cognitive dissonance over Infinite. People say they didn't like it because it was a live service. Yet if you look at what the criticisms of it were at the time it came out and when the playerbase started falling off, the primary issue people had was a lack of updates. In other words, it wasn't enough of a live service.

Which is really an encapsulation of the problem with multiplayer today. So many people think that they want to go back to the "good old days" of mid-2000s multiplayer (The first few Halos, Socom, the first few Battlefields, CS 1.6, etc), but in reality if a multiplayer game like that came out today, people would whine about the lack of content within a month of launch and go back to a live service with a grindy progression system.

isarai204d ago

Why not just port the MCC? 🤔 That was the easiest layup ever and you completely missed it

franwex203d ago

30% profit margins! People will pay $70+ for remakes!

Software_Lover203d ago

I thought the same thing, then I realized that they wouldn't include the remakes in that edition. We may get a different version of Halo MCC in the future with all of the remakes included. I just want them to include Halo 5 at some point for PC.

TheColbertinator204d ago

Can they remake Reach too with the multiplayer?

Knightofelemia204d ago

I wonder if Microsoft will port Reach over to Playstation I quite enjoyed that game. I played Halo 3 and it was not bad I have Halo 2 on the OG Xbox I just need some cables to hook up to my tv to play it.

Infinite is a dumpster fire and as much as I like ODST, in no universe it ranks above Halo 2. This list is trash.

Just exclude Infinite>5>4

ChasterMies865d ago

Best to worst: Halo 3, Halo 2, Halo Reach, Halo CE, Halo 4, Halo ODST, Halo Infinite, Halo 5.
