The problem with Kickstarters

Critical Gamer's Ian D writes: Perhaps it is human nature to think that money can create or solve anything; after all we’ve been using the same way of thinking to buy our way into a cure for cancer for years now, but I can’t help but see problems arising that everyone else seems oblivious to. Let’s give Tim Schafer a lot of money and see what he can do, after all he’s made some great games! He’s made some bad ones too – but let’s not focus on that.

It should be pointed out that should a Kickstarter fund fail to reach the target set at creation no money will be taken, and so this mitigates a form of risk on behalf of those offering up their money; but this is a fallacy in the grand scheme. The risk – the gamble – is not that what you have chosen to donate to may not meet its minimum amount, rather that it might hit it and you contribute to a dangerous trend that will demonise innocent parties, take years to see a ‘return’ on, and potentially leave you ultimately unsatisfied.

Kickstarters are not a cure for gaming cancer. They are just another form of it.

Dont even use that word and to use it like you did is left me with bad taste in my mouth.

As for your thoughts you have right to feel like that But as a backer of a couple myself i find it a very good way of doing things cutting out the greed big corps, stopping the sledge hammer comming down with dead lines staff being pushed Working late hours by bosses because the cheif wants his money.
Witch results in a broken game cos rushed.
Kickstarters is not a risk to me i know the game get made infact i get to play beta on project cars same way as i get to go into latest discussions for backers only on a daily basis to give my oppinion when serellen is asking us the gamers what we want.
We never kept in the dark everything is upfront we always updated to best can be, when these games is done it benifit 360,ps3,pc users.
The games in question are TakeDown,ProjectCars.
Best of all its all in house not passed on from studio to studio and if this works then great.
Soo many small buisnesses got eaten up by big corps over the years now its all about money, with these guys more about the game making soe money obviously for them and us helping them get off the ground.
I for one am very happy to do so...
