Warren Spector has said that he is "scared" of the next generation of systems due to costs.
When asked whether he is looking forward to new consoles, the industry veteran said that he is worried that games with higher production values could fail to break even.
"It's about design and not so much about tech for me. Honestly, I'm more scared about what will come next than I am excited.
"Once we can do Pixar-quality graphics rendered in real time with interactivity, I could see games costing $200 million to make and all of a sudden you have to sell a lot of games just to break even, so I'm a little worried someone's going to do that.

OtherSide Entertainment has bounced back from the cancellation of System Shock 3 and Warren Spector is working on a new game.

The Game Developers Conference kicked off today as a week of virtual talks. In a live chat alongside a rebroadcast of his 2017 GDC talk, Deus Ex designer Warren Spector talked about why he wouldn’t make the game today.
Rockstar said something similar.
I wish creators would get a backbone and accept that every piece of their art will be reflective of the society during the time of creation.

We selected a few words of wisdom that the creator of System Shock and Deus Ex has to share, ranging from his thoughts on game development to collaboration with Disney
Nobody wants to admit this.
Give me a hundred Binding Isaacs before this any day.
I think next Gen there will be an exodus of some companies. There are way too many developers making games with the cost of those games staying the same or nickel/diming us. Plus companies are taking the fun out of gaming with either DRM, Online only, DLC, etc! I would be scared also!
whats to be "scared" about.
don't let these devs fool you, 90% of the money that goes into AAA big budget games is ADVERTISMENT!
Look at a game like The Witcher 2 on pc, it looks better on pc than any next gen console game will in 1600p ultra, that is a fact. It is deeper and more polished than mass effect, dragon age, skyrim, deus ex ect.....
it was made by a small team of polish dudes for a FRACTION of what 1000's of lesser games cost
Hmmm perhaps this is why Epic Mickey 2 is not coming to the WiiU, because Mr. Spector is "scared".
I am not a tech guy, but the Pixar example sounds absolutely absurd. Even if a movie does cost $200 million dollars to make the BluRay, DVD, and movie ticket prices don't seem to skyrocket... so why should games?
If you make good games, instead of mediocre ones (Epic Mickey!) then you won't have to be "scared".
