dead no but at this stage it's not looking very rosy for the formats future, i see it being around for a good while yet but the writing is on the wall it seems
it still has it's backers but for how long is anybody guess, the steady increase in the ps3 install base simply cannot be ignored and no matter how some can't seem to accept it every ps3 sold is a potential BluRay film buyer.
In the HD film format war atleast it seems Sony is going to have the last laugh, the fat lady isn't singing yet but she is preparing for a big performance

I was watching the New Hampshire debates on CNN and on the bottom of the screen I saw news that warner went BR and PS3 made 1.2mill.

Two studios left for Toshiba and then its bye bye!

go ahead and drop prices to $50 for Toshiba players, what good is it if there are no movies for kids and no movies all together!

HD DVD has been declared dead many times but yet seems to bounce back. It is the better "format" per say because it's a complete standard. If you bought a player from day one you will be able to use the same features on the discs for years. Unlike early Blu-ray players that won't meet the profile 1.1 and 2.0 specs. Plus the fact other movie companies would want Sony, a movie company, to hold the keys to the format is beyond me. It's not the end of the world to me because I have both players. It's just I think HD DVD was the better standard to get quality HD into homes cheaper and faster.

well lets not to be so sure though cause for somewhat theres still some companies supporting HDDVD like M$ they not going to unhinged that easily, you know what i mean, "i think" they making something that will challenge the BD, by the way im in blu ray side i prefer BD more capacity and thats the start line of the future DVDs. go blu!!!!

Blu-Ray might not be in quite the coma that HD-DVD is presently, but let's face it. Sony is trying to sell a new technology to an American public that is largely happy with DVD and could quickly warm up to easier forms of downloading. I remain unconvinced.

The true tansition will occur when Blockbuster, Netflix and everybody will only show things in Blu-Ray. I admit that despite the impressive picture of these new technologies I remain skeptical of the general publics desire to adopt yet another standard during what is increasingly beginning to look like a recession.

While PS3 might have given Sony a good start, I am concerned that folks are looking to go to format neutral technologies. At first, Redbox and that box in the grocery used to annoy me...now, I don't mind going by and paying $1 an evening to rent a movie. The simple fact is that there are very few movies that I would buy currently.

Of the movies that I would buy, most have not been released into a high-def transfer. Further, many of the ones which have had the transfer appeared to not be significantly better than the DVD...especially when a movie that hasn't transferred well is compared on an upconversion machine. Don't take my word for it, try it out for yourself. In the end, you are one of the consumers who will decide if the new format can come off of life support.

In my opinion, video has a better chance of doing so but one would be wise to hedge their bets...I already did (have a combo player and I only rent high-def). I could easily see a scenario where Blu-Ray goes the way of SACD or DVD-Audio. Both awesome formats, but the public either didn't see the need or refused to justify the costs. Further, people could purchase new Blu-Rays and just purchase the old DVDs relying upon upscaling technology. Many Americans already do.

I see this as a hollow victory for Blu-Ray. The ultimate question in any rational industry observers mind has always had to have been will the public buy what's being sold. In the end, it's the only question that really bears being answered.
