Sources Detail the PlayStation 4's Processing Specs

The PlayStation 4, reportedly codenamed Orbis, may utilize AMD's A8-3850 APU and Radeon HD 7670 GPU, sources have told IGN, offering the combined performance of both integrated and discrete graphics processors.

Dante1125168d ago

It's looks to me that the PS4 will be alot cheaper than the PS3 was at launch (Which is good), with decent specs to still compete. I can't wait to see what the developers unleashed for the next gen consoles.

NYC_Gamer5168d ago (Edited 5168d ago )

based on the rumored specs the new Xbox/PS4 shouldn't be too expensive...those parts listed could be brought for real cheap by us reg folks just think about the deal MS/Sony are getting since buying in bulk...

jony_dols5168d ago (Edited 5168d ago )

RAM limitations in consoles has been the biggest stumbling block for devs in recent years. But the new consoles are almost guaranteed to have at least (if not more than) 4GB of RAM.

The rumored graphic cards in the next-gen consoles may not seem spectacular when compared against current high end PC's. But once they are optimized for the new hardware; 1st & 3rd party devs should be able to lift their restrictions & provide an impressive graphical leap forward, while hopefully still launching at an affordable price.

GamingTruth5168d ago

jony_dols, that thinking of yours will be so thrown off if ps4 is really upgradeble, pc will really be nothing

jony_dols5168d ago (Edited 5168d ago )

@GamingTruth:

I don't think the PS4 will be physically upgradable (with the exception of the HDD of course); Nintendo tried that back with the N64's RAM pack and it never really took off & only managed to confuse the casual market.

Rather I'd expect the next-gen consoles to be capable of an improved Onlive-esque propitiatory cloud gaming service, for when (down the line) the PS4's (and/or Xbox 720's) physical hardware has been tapped out by the devs.

That means they could continue to produce cheap consoles & shift their attention to game publishing without the need for developing financially risky physical successors.

The worldwide market is not ready for a mass cloud gaming roll-out just yet, but 5-10 years down the line when international fiber optic infrastructures have caught up, they'll introduce it.

ProjectVulcan5167d ago (Edited 5167d ago )

Still seems early to tell. The key part here is still the GPU and while 7670 is weak by 2012 standards, IGN claim that exact specs are not certain.

While it seems highly likely the CPU is a modern x86 part then that is not important at all, it really all comes down to what the GPU ends up like.

If it ends up closer to a 7670 i will be disappointed. That part is only around 3 times faster than RSX and Xenos. If they actually manage something closer to a 7870 that would be more impressive, and that would also fit on one die with an x86 quad core.....

Take it all with a dumptruck full of salt. I remember back in early 2005 it had leaked Xenos was going to be only about 150m transistors and therefore no better than midrange cards of the time.

It was revealed however within a few months that estimates had leaked for only one 'half' of the GPU which was originally built on two separate dies and the total for the graphics processor was more than twice that. Behold, Xenos was actually a pretty serious high end bit of kit when it launched inside 360 at the end of 2005.

Anything could happen. For all we know sony could use an APU AND package it with a discrete GPU die we know nothing about yet. Hybrid Crossfire. AMD dual graphics where unequal GPUs can work together in an APU based system.

ABizzel15167d ago

Well if the rumors are true thenthe PS3 and Nextbox will be mid - mid/high PC's currently. They should be able to play all current gen games at 1080p, at least 30fps, with 4AA - 8AA. So a step of from current consoles, but not the leap everyone wants. It seems everyone's pulling a Wii this go round, but we must remember none of these games are maxed out for PC performance and console games are coded for taking advantage of the specific hardware.

This video is probably identical to what the PS4 and Nextbox will have hardware wise, however, you can expect a bit better performance because / if:

1) They don't need to run a OS like Windows.

2) If they can gain access to the GDDR5

3) Use at least 4GB of RAM

If these two things are "fixed" then you can expect another 10% - 20% boost. But here's the video.

@Abizzel

Those Specs are definetely not midrange by todays standards. A Midrange would be a GTX 560 or a 7850 GPU. The GPU listed in those specs is more like an entry level GPU.

Yes PCs do have an OS, however OS resources have no impact on the performance of a GPU. The OS runs in the background. PCs have a boatload of ram these days, the OS just takes up space there as such it doesnt impact the performance of a GPU in any negative way.

Giving the consoles 4GB of ram is like giving a car with a 4 cylinder engine a huge fuel tank, its not really going to effect performance. Sure you could load it up with high res textures but then at that point you would also have to worry about memory bandwidth. Since its not only the size of the Memory that matters bandwidth plays a large part too. Current consoles have a bandwidth of around 25gb/s, a mid range GPU of todays time easily has more than 150GB/s hence it really matters what sort of bandwidth the next consoles will be getting.

Anyways its amusing that console gamers are getting excited over hardware that can be outperformed by PCs of simular pricing. A PC of simular hardware would provide full BC to all your current games and the games bought in the future would be cheaper too, I dont really see the benefit of owning a console anymore. People must be unable to play thousands of USD worth of games which they bought in the current gen, simply because the next boxes dont offer BC. I have over 200 games on my Steam list most of them bought on discounts, Id be very dissapointed if on my next upgrade i couldnt play all those old games, thats kinda like whats happening to the console gamers.

DeadlyFire5167d ago

I was hoping more for Trinity APU line up with 7000 series embedded + 7000 series GPU. Which would likely be ready for consumers by June/July 2012. Would be vastly superior GPU wise. As the GPU in the A8-3850 is roughly around a AMD 5500 series GPU. The one in the Trinity line is suspected to be measure up more around the 6xxx-7xxx line up.

I do believe the AMD APU + GPU solution is a wise one. As it cuts down on heat while giving about the same level of power as a High end solution if the right combination is in place. My bet still remains on A10 5800 series with 7670D + 7670 GPU. As it releases to consumers in 2012 and the console is coming in 2013. It makes more sense.

Although we could see a mix match APU Design with an upcoming FX series CPU and 7670D GPU + 7670. I imagine that they will try and push for 6-8 threaded CPU. As Power 7 offers up to 32 threads for Microsoft and Nintendo depending on number of cores. I don't know if it will matter much, but still I expect some type of variation to the CPU/GPU than the A8-3850 design.

jjf5167d ago

The specs may seem low by comparison to high end pc's but the advanced packaging and highly customised implementation could be a game changer, read on..
http://semiaccurate.com/201...

deadpoole5167d ago (Edited 5167d ago )

The Big Problem with these specs are ... they are starting with entry level system design. Sure you can optimize more and bit more and bit more and you can really squeeze the juice out of the machine but always remember this.

"When you begin with bottleneck design, you can only optimize sooooo much".

An excellent analogy to explain, you can only compress soooooo much of HD definition video file from uncompressed source. After that no matter what optimization technique you use, it'll result in loss of quality and experience.

And if we apply this analogy over here, we are already starting with compressed file (bottleneck architecture), after this any optimization will be nothing little to no gain.

I can assure you what next gen will be about with these specs ... 1080p with 30fps medium with 2/4xAA (on expense of reducing view distance and effects) or majority of developers will resort to 720p/60fps games with high settings 4/8xAA (still compromising view distance and effects).

If thats the case then Im definately not interested in next gen, because we get very few AAA titles from the first party studios and majority multiplatform games are released by non-first party developers and believe me they don't get as much time as first party developers get because of freakin deadlines set by greedy publishers.

Punch line is Im disappointed.

All I want is 1080p/60fps with High Setting and decent Anti-Aliasing from next gen as a standard, is it toooo much to ask for ... commmonnnnn .... :(

sikbeta5167d ago

It shows that Sony did get the message and realise that going nuts with horsepower for a high price doesn't work out well...

I'm cool with this, I prefer an affordable console I can get day/month/year one, rather than wait for a price-cut like I had to do this gen

Ravenor5168d ago

Doesn't the spec list look kinda similar to the new Xbox's rumoured specs? Also, a jump in GPU manufacturer probably means no Backwards Compatibility.

Probably fake.

Emilio_Estevez5168d ago

If you read the article they say it is the same as the nextbox specs, and almost all rumors had said they would be going to AMD.

FatGayandbald5168d ago

yep your right and its just too much of a coincidence along with both going down the anti-used games path,i think both have been talking to each other to keep costs down instead of trying to outdo each other and it will need both Sony n MS to use anti-used software to make that plan work.

jony_dols5168d ago (Edited 5168d ago )

Parity might be a good thing. It was probably demanded by 3rd party devs & publishers to ensure multiplatform development would be easier than the current-gen.

It will be in the quality of 1st party software where next-gen might be won or lost.

OC_MurphysLaw5168d ago

@Ravenor ...I was thinking the same thing. It seems like the rumored specs of each next gen system are basically the same but there are some subtle changes. It just almost feels like someone created this solid set of possible specs that could be plausible and are now leaking them back and forth to both sides of the media fence.

Disccordia5167d ago

In which case... could Sony and Microsoft be working on a console together??

hakis865167d ago

ATI is great, but wouldn't it be more awesome if the PS4 got a GPU from Nvidia again - which now can do amazing Anti-aliasing with little performance impact! Aliasing is definitely an issue in games.
Link: http://www.guru3d.com/artic...

Oh and Adaptive V-sync could avoid stuttering in games :
http://www.guru3d.com/artic...

Either way, I hope the next gen consoles end up as "high-end" as possible, while still not being insanely expensive.

sikbeta5167d ago

With AMD doing GPU and maybe CPU, BC is out of the question, it'll raise the price of the console no matter what because there is no way to emulate CELL right now, I hope they release 2 versions, an Standard PS4 without BC @ affordable price for newcomers and people who don't care about BC and a Premium PS4 with BC for the ones who care about it, win-win for all

I hope Sony uses Cell 2, wtih 24 cores, but make it easier to develop for, since there were many whiny little multiplatform developpers who cried they couldn't take it anymore lol.

Machioto5168d ago

I read that Sony is going to use a high end powervr series 6 gpu cluster with cell,I say that because reports of it are almost 3 years old and they also said imagination technologies was to power the ps vita which is true.

Holeran5167d ago

They already have a 32 spu cell processor that they could easily put into a PS4. With that and a good dedicated GPU and 6 gigs of ram imagine the possibilities.

5167d ago
one2thr5167d ago

@J-blaze
And yet the 360 can't produce visuals that are similar to that of the ps3?....
Name one 360 open world game that looks better than infamous 2....
Name any game on 360 that has the same character design quality with characters of up to 256 player count, in real time....
Name any 360 game that is more intuitive than little big planet
for psp, ps3 and soon to be psv....
Name any games on 360 that can showcase the value of "scale" that God of War has done on the Ps3...
See you cant, and there is much more going on with the Cell than what you and I think we know and also its the first of its class that was released to consumers iinside of a games console, thus for IF Sony chooses to make a successor to the Cell then I'd expect it to be twice as efficient than that of the one found in PS3, hell the only thing that seem to be problem with game develope on the PS3 was that the RAM was very limited, 512 of it split, with the add consumption for the OS footprint... So yeah, maybe Sony is going to go with a Cell 2.0....

ABizzel15167d ago

@j-blaze

That was one of the most ignorant comments I've seen in a long time. The PS3 had the most powerful processor of all 3 consoles. TO put it simply the "Cell" is capable of running processing task that normally the GPU takes care of freeing up the GPU to carry out more task itself.

No other console can do that, and is why PS exclusives look as good as they do.

The reason most 360 games are on par with all but the best PS3 exclusives is that:

1) It was easier to developer for.

2) The 1 year head start gave them a greater install base making them the lead console for 3rd party development for most developers.

3) Ports to the PS3 were only running on the single core and leaving out the 6 SPE's used for gaming (there are 8, but 1 is used for XBM, and another to help the other SPE's run efficiently).

4) The Xbox 360 had a better RAM and GPU setup than the PS3. The shared memory was better suited for game development than the split 256MB that the PS3 used.

Like it or not, All of this is FACT.

There's a reason why clusters of PS3's have been used as supercomputers, and that's because the raw processing power of the Cell was above that of the other consoles.

The Cell is a powerful CPU, deves. just needed more time, and now that it's going on 6 years a PS4 with a 32 SPE Cell should be easily developed for.

WetN00dle695167d ago

@one2thr

Yes thats true BUT then again much of Sonys great looking games is all thanks to the Developers it has under its helm! The System can only do so much!

one2thr5167d ago

@Wetnooble
But once again which system was those games mention only capable of running on, so yeah its a 50/50 or even 60/40 set of cooperation between the two, and if its only "The developers" then why haven't any of the 360 developers create something as eye/mind pleasing as those mentioned PS3 title?... Viva Pinata, really?... Yeah your right leave it up to developers...

JellyJelly5167d ago

"then why haven't any of the 360 developers create something as eye/mind pleasing as those mentioned PS3 title?"

Forza Motorsport 4 looks better than Gran Turismo 5. And it doesn't use downgraded PS2 textures for the majority of its cars like GT 5.

IRetrouk5167d ago

Jelly it's been proven already that gt5 is the better looking game, we have all seen the vids, reach a little more, someone might believe u one day lol

Consoldtobots5167d ago

i second that notion, the CELL was and is a gamechanger. There are fight scenes in the first RFOM that still can't be replicated on the 360 and even most PC architectures.

In order to help devs out this time around Sony needs to sink money into the
DEVELOPMENT TOOLS. This is the only place where MS eats Sony's lunch everytime. As a software engineer I don't want to have to worry about coding down to the metal to make my concepts work. I want a robust API that I can use to accompish my tasks. In other words there should be an intermediary that translates and manages tasks to the SPUs without my having to worry about little more than a routines memory and bandwidth footprint. To use a car as an analogy I want to get behind the driver's wheel and hit the gas pedal, not hang out of the windhshied making tweaks to the engine as a drive.

BlindGuardian5168d ago

nice looking specs but in comparison less of what the PS3 had 5 years ago

Ocelot5255168d ago (Edited 5168d ago )

quite disappointing imo:

in 2006 the ps3 and 360 were really high end machines

the PS3 with the geforce 7900 and a CPU that could handle 16 threads at once. And the 360 with a cpu consisting out of 3 3.2 ghz cores (while 90% of pc onwers at that time only had single core CPU's)

Oblvion ran flawlessy on these consoles while many pc owners had to install old-oblivion

but these new consoles will only be a bit better than budget pc's

JsonHenry5168d ago (Edited 5168d ago )

Should be awesome. Here is JUST the APU playing Crysis 2- http://www.youtube.com/watc...

And with so many PC games now days also being made for console the fact that the PS4 will have an AMD APU in it will mean great performance optimization that will hopefully translate into improved performance on the PC side of things as well.

Ocelot5255168d ago

?

the PS3 also had a PC GPU ( a custom geforce 7900)

cannon88005168d ago (Edited 5168d ago )

WTF this is shit! Come on SONY! I expected a lot more than just a crappy quad core from amd. I have an amd phenom II x4 955 but come on! Cell not good enough? The cell processor is still more powerful than that quad core. If these really are the specs for the next playstation, then don't expect next gen games to evolve technically as much as the ps3 did over the long run.

Machioto5168d ago

I agree, one problem I see is how would they market this against each other if they have very similar specs, like I said in my first post Sony is going to use a revise cell and high end powervr series chip set.

cannon88005167d ago (Edited 5167d ago )

Yeah, I also understand that too. When the ps3 first came out, the early commercials for it were all about the hardware of the ps3 and how powerful and revolutionary it was. I am a big fan of sony and only purchased sony consoles, but this is really going to make me and a lot of other people sad if these really are going to be the specs. The technology was what separated the ps3 from all the other consoles. It was a beast. That's what I and many other people want again; a beast of a console and the price tag to back it up.

Leonex5167d ago

Im with you 100%...SONY is now looking like every other company...Im so pissed.....SONY...WTF....

DeadlyFire5167d ago

The strange thing is they started work on Power7 just like Microsoft and Nintendo then pushed it aside according to rumors. Why is what I wonder? Hopefully they can come up with a reasonable explanation.

I expect AMD Trinity or AMD Steamroller to be the true APU if they are going that route. A8-3850 is not enough. Its possible as well they build a custom CPU/GPU combo for an APU. Say one of the new 8 core FX series CPUs coming in 2012 + AMD 7850? I say FX 8350.

The new FX series CPUs launch in Q2 just like the new Trinity APUs. Funny thing is they have 8, 6, and 4 core versions of FX series. Just like Power7 it seems. Likely they are able to throw them into the APU if they want.

at those specs, the best performance will be at 720p/30fps. barely, more powerful than current consoles...

specialguest5167d ago

My fear is another console generation of 30fps due to the limited resources, developers probably care more about pushing graphics limit than silky smooth frame rate. 60fps is should be standard by now.

Mikeyy5167d ago

What Bullshit. It is impossible that the PS4 would launch with NO HDD.

I knew that link was fishy when he started talking about the XB720 having an 8 Core I7

Prince_Dim-Lu5167d ago

He's been correct about the two code names.. Durango and Orbis, and also correct on this new rumored 4 core CPU for the PS4.

That link was put up in December. He's been right about things that have been announced only recently.

Not saying it's true.. but that link is very, very interesting.

DeadlyFire5167d ago

CPU is already 64-bit, HDD will be there, RAM changes on a dime.

Xbox 3's CPU is pretty much confirmed Power7+ 32nm design. So no i7 anything.

Cloud could be added to either platform by 2015. There is more than one cloud service around and very likely in next 5-10 years they will grow at a slow rate and be supported on a console platform one day.

morkendo235167d ago (Edited 5167d ago )

ooooooUCH!! NINTENDO, Sony copying.

loltonytony5167d ago

Hope you know that was user made.

pain777pas5167d ago

You all make some solid points here. I do believe one thing for sure. MS and Sony have been talking. The specs are almost identical. The differentiating factor will be first party games and services. They both have unique takes on the online service space. Next gen will be interesting. I have to admit though that graphics are not swaying me as they used to. I can honestly live with the current gen for a year or 2 to be honest just create new franchises. 3rd party exclusivity will end though if hunches end up right with Sony and MS sitting at the same table concerning hardware with the dev community. I just hope that Sony doesnt show their hand and Epic doesnt tip MS off like they did last gen. Bluray to Xbox may have started hardware parity discussion to be honest.

TheDivine5167d ago

Sony and Ms havent been talking. Thats about as likely as Iran and Israel working together on nuclear weapons. These are rumors, neither one wants the other to know what they are doing. It might wind up similar if they both went AMD with about the same budget but they would NEVER work together to release 2 competing platforms. I think the real race is online, social networking built in (think xbl meets facebook), cloud, and something innovative like the tablet controller or kinect v2 with crazy good fp and finger tracking.

Ms is happy with the media functions, kinect, and xbl. Thats where the money is for them so i see more broad mass market appeal.

Wii-u will innovate as nintendo always does but i think this will be the first home console since the snes to get a crazy amount of 3rd party support.

Sony will prob focus on online to really cmpete with ms, prob have something like kinect or the wii-u controller, and try to push it out 1st and keep it under 350-400 max so they dont repeat this gen. Def will be easier to develop for none of this making dev's learn new shit just to port a game.

I could be all wrong but its all speculation anyways. I hope we get cutting edge consoles sold at a loss but i think those days are over.

Rage_S905167d ago

@devine

You're wrong about the WII U it's already losing 3rd party support due to weak hardware.

pain777pas5167d ago

Lines have been drawn though. The controller will be another point of difference amongst the consoles. You're probably right about the super Eyetoy coming to out aswell. One thing we have to realize is that the console business has changed and parity would not be the end of the world as there are exclusive first party devs on both sides. A bluray deal would have to be in the works for MS to compete. Creating a new format is not MS' expertise. MS needs partners in hardware more than Sony does. Bleeding edge tech days are over because everyone wants to make money. If rumors are true than the Wii U wont even be as powerful as a PS3 or 360. I do hope that there is more ram in the Wii U but Nintendo cares about software and gimmick hardware more than raw processing and graphical power. We'll see in the coming year what really materializes. I may end my console gaming hobby here if things end up that they just want to make more money and nothing more. I would love to see consoles sold at a loss again but I think that the PS1 and PS2 days are over there will be no 150 million selling dedicated home console again. They are now chasing profitability while splitting market share. We will see though maybe one of the home console thinks about its users and we get something cool. The Iran and Israel analogy is a little drastic when Vaio laptops come with MS software installed and Skype is coming to Vita. Plus Sony picture movies are probably on some app that Microsoft has on the Xbox. Its just business.

Tsar4ever015167d ago (Edited 5167d ago )

The HD Radeon 7670 supports GDDR5 1GB VRAM, but the SYSTEM RAM haven't been mentioned. If this next gen console need to be graphically valid to at least to year 2020, it damn better have at least 8GB GDDR3 RAM like Crytek & Epic games asked for.

Shit, The system will run a x86 RISC-64bit OS, if it was a x86 32bit, it wouldn't be able to support no more than 4GB of system RAM, but a 64bit x86 RISC system is said could support up to 16GB of RAM. Give to devs more ram, lots more, so we can get those lush wide open world sandbox titles with ultra strong textures, lighting and etc, etc and more RAM for better animation & AI tech. GDDR/DDR RAM is mad cheap. Go LARGE ON THE SYSTEM RAM, SONY!! If not, Your system graphically won't be able to keep up past 2015, and you can forget about seeing anything looking as good as the "Good Samaritan" demo.

Rage_S905167d ago

How the hell are they gonna put 8GB of Ram chips on the Motherboard, GDDR5's densest chip right now is 256mb, that's 32 ram chips unless they get it to 512mb then it's still 16 ram chips.

specialguest5167d ago (Edited 5167d ago )

If my memory is accurate, I remember an article from last year where Sony stated that the PS4's upgrade will not be as dramatic as the PS3 from the PS2.

This seems about right if true.

RememberThe3575167d ago

And I remember that disappointing feeling in my stomach. If Sony and MS don't deliver someone else will and they'll loss their crowns. If the PS4 and Nextbox don't blow me away you can color me disappointed and possible out of the whole console thing.

WitWolfy5167d ago

You know i've been thinking of the EXACT same thing while reading all these posts.. Thinking... but Sony said....

One thing im anxious to see is if the the "NEXTBOX" will really be "forward compatible" like they claimed it would be earlier this gen.

If im not mistaken "forward compatible" meant playing current gen games on the next gen Xbox console increasing the games' visuals 10 times sharper and/or better. Some one please correct me if im wrong here.

I remember reading an article like this back in 2009 some where.

PlayStation®4 is shaping up to revolutionize the gaming landscape as Sony does so well.

According to the specs, PS4 is slated to become one of, if not THE greatest consoles ever made. Sony Computer Entertainment has never made a mistake of giving consumers a complete gaming experience that cannot be duplicated by the next gen wannabes in the market.

With PS4 touting a quad core 2.9 ghz processor designed to work in complete harmony with the console, PC gaming will become a thing of the past once PlayStation®4 arrives.

Oldman1005168d ago

According to Tom's Hardware hierarchy chart, the HD 6670/7670 has similar performance to a 8800/9800 GT. The 8800gtx which is slightly more powerful than the 8800gt, was released 9 days before the ps3, on November 8th 2006.

The HD 7670 has less performance than a GPU released 6 years ago.

xtreampro5168d ago (Edited 5168d ago )

What about the on board graphics chip in the APU?

Arksine5168d ago

True, but async crossfire should put performance above that.

These specs are likely based on early dev units. The purpose of these units is to allow developers to get a jump on programming for the architecture. Hopefully the final specs will be based on Trinity or Kaveri APUs, with a custom Southern Islands GPU in the same thermal envelope as the 7670.

RememberThe3575168d ago

This is a next gen console, if I'm going to be paying next gen prices the PS4 and NextBox need to blow this generation out of the water. Otherwise whats the purpose of upgrading?

DeadlyFire5167d ago

I certainly hope so. I am expecting 28 nm Kaveri, but it might be a rush to put it in PS4 which is why I question it. Possible it could have 6 or 8 cores + Higher end GPU solution in APU though. Hopefully with another GPU.

E3 big reveal is likely going to be the place where they decide if they want to change anything after reviewing competition.

Computersaysno5167d ago (Edited 5167d ago )

7670 would have been quick in 2007. By the end of 2008 it would have been midrange at best. Been 4 years since 7670 was considered speedy. 5 this time next year if the console launches by then.

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn231d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn231d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown31d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay31d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay31d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac30d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger31d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300031d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde31d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde31d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

Xbox Confirms 'Project Helix', Its Next-Gen Console That Will Also Play PC Games

New Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma, who took over as the head of the Xbox business last week as longtime Xbox boss Phil Spencer retired, has confirmed the codename for Xbox's next-generation console – Project Helix – and also confirmed long-swirling rumors that the device will play Xbox and PC games.

dveio84d ago

Hm.

Selling to customers the benefits of Xbox Helix compared to a PC and Steam Machine will be the biggest task for Xbox' marketing, I suppose.

I said when Xbox destroyed their future with with all their arrogance at the start of XBone”if they keep loosing money they only have 2 more generations before they exit the console market like sega.
This is their final chance to validate the existence of a console to the INVESTORS if this console fail as we all know without exclusives from the activision acquisition or their old exclusives for more than a year it’s game over for Xbox consoles.
Everyone know games will wait for a timed exclusive to go to their console of choice, Microsoft signed the Xbox console death certificate the moment they started PORTING ALL THEIR GAMES to other consoles.
Now my hope is that Valve gives Sony a run for their money and we get a good generation where they take risks and bring new experiences to the market.

S2Killinit84d ago (Edited 84d ago )

They will make xbox “consoles”, but they actively downplay consoles because their business strategy is walled garden services

This is basically a PC w xbox logo

fr0sty84d ago (Edited 84d ago )

Xbox has put itself in a tough position... With current RAM prices, the system is going to cost a fortune (it's APU alone is $500-600, before you even get to the RAM, SSD, power supply, etc). So, we're looking at a 4 digit price tag, and it has the Gabecube to compete against now directly in that console space. It has no exclusive games at all. PS6 is coming in close in performance but expected to cost hundreds less, and PS6 Pro will likely again take the "most powerful crown" once it drops, but it will actually have exclusive games.

Not an easy sell to the general public, and not even an easy sell to the PC enthusiasts as it isn't powerful enough to justify paying that much for when you could just build a far more powerful PC for not much more $. If I'm dropping north of $1k on a game system, I'm going to want to go all out, not have mid-range performance. It'll be interesting how they plan on marketing this thing, and who they expect to buy it.

Reaper22_83d ago

Looks like you dont know what you're talking about.

1Victor83d ago

What changed?
Hey obscured 🤖🤖
I’ll explain it like to a IQ 9
Nothing has changed they kept loosing money and to please their INVESTORS Microsoft purchased activision and other developers spending more money they could make in WAAAAAY too long for the company CEO that love monetizing everything so they started porting to EVERYTHING they could (even fire stick🤣🤣).
Do you know why it’s called the big 3?
In the lat 70’s to early 80’ there was multiple companies with their own consoles each the market collapsed and only 2 survived, enter PlayStation, exit sega, exit google, Microsoft is destabilized and desperately start to port all their games EVERYWHERE, enter valve.

Now
W h a t do Y O U think w i l l h a p p e n t o
t h e 3rd leg of that triangle when one is warbling and a replacement is on the way.

Loosing money ? Got it. You’re obviously educated….

1Victor83d ago

@ghost: “ Loosing money ? Got it. You’re obviously educated…”
Sure I’m not a scholar but it’s obvious that they aren’t going to be publishing their big franchises day one games on their competitors because of brotherly love for the gaming industry.
Unless and I know this is something a lot of Xbox hardcore fans like obscure can’t comprehend that a big corporation like Microsoft is loosing money gen after gen,
Money doesn’t come for free from big corporations Xbox gen 1 lost money on consoles sold. Xbox 360 lost money on repairs of the RROD Xbox One didn’t make the money they wanted, Xbox series hasn’t sold as well as expected and have a MASIVE LOAN from all the studios and a publisher purchase..
I’ll be waiting for your reply proving they are not loosing money. Oh I see you pulling that game pass card, put it back FCC filing by Microsoft said they didn’t make money from game pass.
NOW PROVE ME WRONG

mudakoshaka83d ago (Edited 83d ago )

They had to put them on other platforms. All the gaming companies they bought cost a LOT of money. Xbox is not sufficient to bring in new revenue, so the only choice is expanding your market share by releasing on other platforms that are clearly leading the market. It was not something they wanted but something they needed to do to recoup some of all the expenses.

I might be saying the obvious but any piece of hardware for as powerful as it could be, without an healthy portfolio of fun to play and engaging games is worth less tehn zero. So as long as the new XBOX will be marketed as the most powerful console on the planet and NOT as the ONLY place where true long lastying XBOX fans can impersonate their beloved characters/heroes this thing is going to fail big. I would love to think that Playstaiton is moving away from the PC ports also to keep its identity, the truth is that a console value is higher if that console is the only mean to access certain IPs. XBOX with gamepass and PC ports has depersonalized his player and fan base.
Just my two cents ... but I am sure there is some thurth in here.
Peace on !

Reaper22_83d ago

Xbox has a huge library of great games. This new console will be able to play them all. Thats what gamers care about the most.

Deathdeliverer84d ago

The question will be if you have a PC, why buy a Xbox that plays PC and Xbox games… Unless they plan to have you buy a Xbox PC instead of a dedicated PC. Thats got to be the plan. Take some of the PC players and turn them into console PC players. They couldn’t give you full access to the PC/console like you can with a dedicated PC because you would think the piracy for the “dedicated” Xbox games would be crazy. Yeah, they are really going to have to explain who this is for. If you can install whatever you want then you would have Steam access. This directly copies the Steam box idea so I’m sure Steam isn’t happy about it. I guess time will tell.

84d ago
Rainbowcookie84d ago (Edited 84d ago )

Maybe it will be heavily subsidized so software sales will make up the loss to get it into peoples hands early and the system allows for a steam like environment. I think Sony knows since rumor has it that they will do less Pc ports.

derek84d ago

I dont think that's in the cards not with the 80 plus billion spent on gaming this gen. Microsoft aint subsidizing hardware anymore look how they've priced the series consoles and offered no deals this past holidays. Sony pulling away from pc ports is because there is no good rational for continuing to do so.

ABizzel183d ago (Edited 83d ago )

They don’t sell enough of the current Xbox consoles to heavily subsidize those platforms and in fact they increased in price, so I don’t see a future where this gets any. I think we’re looking at a $999 platform, which I mean is great for a GPU rumored to be on par with a full PC running a RTX 5070Ti/5080 equivalent depending on clocks, since those GPUs alone around $1000+.

I assume they’re going to do a two tiered system again, because a lowered cost version could be the significantly better option for PC gamers specifically the esports crowd who doesn’t upgrade all the time and don’t care about the highest specs. If they can do something around a RX 9060 with 16GB+ of VRAM for $499 then that would be the true winner because it gives those PC gamers a REAL substantial upgrade at a very reasonable price. It’ll also put a huge amount of pressure on the Steam Box.

isarai_lee83d ago

What i was wondering too, like best case scenario it's a PC with a bunch of restrictions on it, and when ALL their games on on PC, what is even the incentive here? 🤔

ABizzel183d ago (Edited 83d ago )

It builds a niche for them, and I’ve been saying they should have done this since the XBO. However, it’s still going to be a battle. Hardcore PC gamers are not leaving PC unless this is an ultimate steal in price:performance.

The rumored spec depending on clock speeds should place this around RTX 5070TI / 5080 performance which sounds insane, but the rumored launch in late 2027 and the RTX 5070Ti/5080 will be almost 3 years old by then.

But those GPUs are retailing around $1000, so what is this PC-Console hybrid going to cost.

Basically a PC with an Xbox logo slapped on, just like the so called Xbox handheld.
My guess is it won't play my Xbox games I have on disc 🤔

84d ago
babadivad84d ago

Nah, the handheld IS a PC. It can stream Xbox games or play the PC version of those games with "play anywhere".

This sounds like it will play Xbox games natively, which is amazing if true.

I want to see more. I already have a powerful PC so I need to be sold on this before just diving in. Tech whore that I am. Seems very interesting so far, regardless.

DazaMc83d ago

Perhaps it will download a compatible version if you have the disc in.

You just described all consoles. At the end of the day they're all PCs.
