Why are MMORPGs so Linear?

LoreHound.com writes: "Today’s MMORPGs seem to place the player on a well defined path, lined with NPCs pointing the way from start to end. Over the last few years, this has become more apparent with entire zones dedicated to certain levels, as the players travels in a linear line from zone to zone."

not sure which games this guys playing, every mmo i've ever played has been in an open world

That's what I was thinking. MMOs are pretty much open by nature and/or design.

"...as the players travels in a linear line from zone to zone"

I think it's pretty self explanatory. MMORPGs are usually extremely linear in the way they play out.

- Player starts at Area A; does all quests there, leaves to Area B
- Does all the quests at B, leaves to C
- Does all the quests at C, leaves to D
(Occasionally you'll get a quest to go from, say, Area A to Area B, and then back to Area A)

Yes, some MMORPGs, maybe even most, will let you go back to those other places at will, but there is no reason to go back most of the time. Also, even if you can access Area P as a new player, you can't do a thing there. So even with these big open maps, you're still going in a linear line, and it makes that openness pretty pointless. The map design itself might as well be set up in that same straight line.

The way MMORPGs are set up just needs to change, if you ask me. It's so basic.. Even with all of these new MMORPGs, like SWTOR, or Guild Wars 2, we're really still playing the same exact thing we played in the '90s. =\

@fragger2k8

what do you define as linear? i havent played an mmo yet where youre forced to do any quest, sure there are rewards for doing some quests that most people want to do, but youre never forced into a certain path.

sure you can start at area A and do the quests there, but you can also just skip every quest there and go to are B and do 3 quests, then go back to area A and do 4 quests, then decide that you dont like the area you started in and take a long trip to area Y (another starting location) and do 10 quests there and move to area Z, do 4 quests.

linear means theres only one way to do things, in most mmos youre not forced to do anything. ill give an example from ffxi, three starting locations, three different main quests, already non-linear as you have three paths of progression, but youre never actually forced to do any of them, you can go do any number of random quests from any town in the game at the start. or you can decide that you dont want to fight and go crafting or fishing or do some other minigames. either way, its definitely not linear, and i suspect youre not quite understanding what linear means.

I loved this game and have played since launch but don't let this article fool you, this game is a step above life support. While they are still technically updating the game, the updates are few and far between and there is a significant lack of quality control, so many little bugs that have been present for years.

TheColbertinator1069d ago

The updates felt flimsy to me also. Stopped playing in 2021.

Andrew3361069d ago

This game got a huge update last year didn't it with more content?

PapaBop1069d ago

They promoted it as an expansion yet offered like 3-4 hours of content. The game is amazing and easily one of the best Star Wars games ever made but content drops are so few and far between.
