This Generation's Must-Play JRPGs

GameInformer- "It’s no secret that this generation of video games hasn’t been particularly kind to Japanese games in general, and Japanese RPGs in particular have fallen out of favor. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing in this once-beloved genre worth playing from the past five years. With this generation approaching its end, we decided to look back on the must-play JRPGs that came out on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, DS, and PSP."

And with FFXIII on it, the list becomes invalid to me.

Simon_Brezhnev5205d ago

LMFAO i have to agree. Another fail is i didnt see Folklore on that list.

NewMonday5205d ago

Folklore was great, it looks out-dated now, but it has a deep original addictive gameplay, and a good branching story.

Lost Odyssey is the truest FF since FF10

Outside_ofthe_Box5205d ago

It's sad that 13 and 13-2 taints this list. The list would have been perfect had those two games been excluded.

dedicatedtogamers5205d ago

FF13 is pretty terrible, but ya gotta admit that a gamer probably should give it a try to at least see what all the fuss is about.

The DS and PSP alone could dominate this sort of list. JRPG fans without a handheld are missing out big time.

Games that should have been on the list: Knights in the Nightmare, Half-minute hero, Resonance of Fate, and Nier.

Bleucrunch5205d ago

Yes I would agree...I don't know why they would have added that terrible game but to each his own. Their are some RPG's in their that I haven't played as of yet...please don't judge me and yes I am ashamed that I haven't played them....(dragon quest and disgea) But I look forward to catching in those franchises...Lost Odyssey is a classic of a game EVERYONE should play that game...OH Japanese RPG's are NOT dead please do not believe the foolishness that others are saying...They still have the telling of a story in a video game on SMASH!

Stinky_Fish5205d ago

Why is game informer doing this? They are already known as japan trolls

"It’s no secret that this generation of video games hasn’t been particularly kind to Japanese games in general, and Japanese RPGs in particular have fallen out of favor."

HAHAHAHAHAHA not really. Japanese rpgs have never been this popular or mainstream

I am so happy this guy is leaving GI

dark-hollow5205d ago

Actually I agree with him.

Compare jrpg titles of this Gen to the ps1 or ps2 era and you'll see they have fallen by far.

Stinky_Fish5205d ago (Edited 5205d ago )

You shouldnt agree with what he said

first he said theres less rpgs. Thats statistically and factually false

Compare krpg titles of this gen to asny other gen and youll see they have not fallen at all, in fact they have risen.......

1) More jrpgs than ever have been localized
2) More jrpgs than ever are selling over 100k units
3) More jrpgs than ever are getting good reviews
4) more jrpgs than ever from past gens are getting localized

rose tinted glasses

@Outside_ofthe_Box

Dont disagree with a continued list of great games

kevnb5205d ago (Edited 5205d ago )

Other than final fantasy most Japanese rpgs have been seen as too anime and have failed commercially. And that goes back decades, heck most of those rpgs aren't even brought over from Japan.

Godmars2905205d ago

They've failed to advance in quality, but there are still as many out there as there was in the PS1/PS2 eras.

Tdmd5205d ago (Edited 5205d ago )

I don't think there are too many of them in this gen (at least there aren't if you own only one gaming platform, which is my case)... Souls series, Valkyria Chronicles and Folklore are all I can think of (never tried Disgaea, although I intent to at some point).

Of course, I might just be misinformed, for I do see a lot of people here saying there's a lot going on in the genre this gen. I just fail to see it.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle59d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

jznrpg65d ago

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree65d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai65d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde66d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy66d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

DivineHand12566d ago (Edited 66d ago )

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
