PS3 vs Xbox 360 vs Wii: Games

Games! Games! Games!

Consoles were built to play games. Although consoles are quickly adding things like Netflix, Facebook and on demand TV, games will always be at the heart of the console.

Which console has got the best and most games?

To find the answer we have to delve past the internet talk and PR claims and strip it right back to the facts. We will find out the rise, and maybe fall, of the quantity and quality of game support for each console. Has Kinect affected the quality of 360 software? Was 2011 the year where the PS3 excelled in games? Does the quality of games on the Wii match the exceptional hardware sales? We will find all this out.

First off, cool comparison!

In addition to the 70-100 bar, include an 80-100 bar, as 80 is generally considered the cut-off for a "high quality" game and I think it would make a better visual representation of the total high quality games released in the year per system.

Also, I don't think PSN and Arcade games should be included, they're held to a lower standard given the price. A 90% PSN/Arcade game would never receive such a score at AAA game price ($50-$70.

If a console only had games of PSN/Arcade quality it wouldn't be fair to compare it to a console with many big budget full price games, that's akin to comparing iOS games with console games - iOS would win in terms of sheer volume of higher scores but it can hardly be said that iOS is a superior gaming platform.

Maybe a seperate chart comparing PSN and Arcade games would make a more telling graph?

The only original games that make Wii, PS3 and 360 worth it are the exclusives. Everything else is superior & better on the PC no matter how you put it. So that way the order should be:

1. Wii - Most exclusives & audience is people who like to have fun, and not fanboys who follow metacritic. It is very modern in its approach yet old school gaming is preserved. It is the console that defines the generation. It has the best online store also, which is a combination of Wii Ware and Virtual Console.

2. PS3 - Exclusives like Uncharted, God of War, Little Big Planet, Heavy Rain, Journey, Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid really make this machine worth it. PS1 and PS2 games are available at the online store. It also has a blu ray player!

3. 360 - This does have some good exclusives too like HALO, Gears of War, Forza, Alan Wake. But this box is really for those who want to do PC gaming in their bedroom. It does have a really good online community though!

I partially agree with gypsygib: Having a few metric bars is always a good thing. Although I'd think that a comparison of 85+ games (excellent games) and 75+ games (good games) is a nicer threshold to have.
And there's also the issue where some multiplats are getting slightly different score because of different review outlets for each console, so it's possible that a game on one platform will get 80 and be included, while the identical game on another platform will get 79 and be omitted. But I guess that these cancel each other out so we can live with that.

On the other hand, I think that it will be just plain wrong to omit PSN/Arcade games. Some of the digital games are already providing the same quality and amount of content as retail games, and they are already competing price-wise with older retail releases (because you can currently buy retail games from older years for 15$ or less, and the reviews should take that into account). Journey for example is the top rated digital game this year, and not including this game while at the same time including some old games from 2006-2007 that obviously didn't age all that well is just not doing any justice.

So this is probably the best and most comprehensive way to compare two platforms. When logical people are about to make a purchasing decision, nobody cares about how many partial exclusives, true exclusives, timed exclusive and other marketing bull each platform has. The ONLY relevant metric is how many games the console has overall.

Although be warned that many people here will disagree with your metrics simply because when you include EVERYTHING they can't manipulate the numbers. The can't exclude games based on arbitrary criteria that will make it seem as if their preferred platform of choice has a better selection of games. Marketing people tend to do that, but fanboys are not all that different.

Also, we have a full quarter of 2012 behind us now. It will be interesting to see if the trendline continues into this year.

If you want to compare games you have to do console exclusives only.

PS-Analog5178d ago

I think that's been done alot. This looks more at the quality of games and the amount of game by year. Maybe exclusives can be a future article from us.

Moncole5178d ago

Yeah but when people do that they will only choose some exclusive and not all of the.

Almir9085177d ago

Kind of an unfair comparison. A Lot more multiplatform reviews go into the 360 version of the game scoring over 90's and 80's. If anything the exclusives are the only fair comparison because reviews are put into those games individually

The earliest I wanna see a PS4 is 2015.

TheUnbiasedLion5177d ago

Saw the wensite and i thought there would be blind fanboyism but the facts got laid bare and everything on there is the truth, good read.

Judging by the trend the ps3 will overtake the 360 this year on games quality BUT thats just how the trend looks and i don't want to call anything.....though i do think the ps3 might win on metric which so far is pretty good thanks to journey.

ipe5177d ago

Metacritic s highly flawed, especially with multiplats, and this with putting everything in mix lol.
Also arcade game have different standards.

MGS hd collection is 90 on 360(AAA) but 89 on ps3( AA), for some reason lol. GTA episodes same thing aaa on 360, but 88 on ps3....etc

PS-Analog5177d ago

There are a few moments like this I agree. but it's the only place where subjective reviews can be collected to make them facts.

Also multiplats scores go in the favor of PS3 so it does even out a little.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle31d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

jznrpg37d ago

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree37d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai37d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.
