RPGs, shooters and evolution top PC gaming picks for 2008

Christopher T. Fong of San Francisco Chronicle picks five top PC games in 2008. (January 1, 2008)

MK_Red6715d ago (Edited 6715d ago )

Fallout 3, Spore and StarCraft 2 = PC gaming is definitly NOT dead.
Sure, Fallout is multi and SC2 may be but they've always been and will always be classic PC games. As for Spore, it's from Will Wright; nuff said.
It has a point about possiblity of Fallout 3 ending up a BioShock rip-off but that wouldn't be too bad since most BioShock's themes and atmosphere is kinda borrowed from Fallout (Don't like using word rip-off because BioShock is a full classic on its own IMO).

JsonHenry6715d ago

I don't see the comparison between Bioshock and Fallout 3 at all. Bioshock was very linear and very restricted in terms of exploration. Fallout on the other hand is completely wide open. You just do what you want. You don't even have to play the actual story if you don't want to!

All they had to tell me was StarCraft 2 though. I might as well just get a divorce when that game comes out because I will forget I even have a real life for months.

Prismo_Fillusion6715d ago (Edited 6715d ago )

Just speaking of 2008 in general, I think it has the potential to have better games on every system than in 2007.

Super Smash Brothers Brawl has a good chance at being the best Wii game since launch.

Final Fantasy XIII (and versus), Little Big Planet, and possibly Killzone 2 will trump any 2007 PS3 release (in my humble opinion).

Fallout 3 and Starcraft 2 may make for the best PC gaming in many years.

And well..I'm not as up to date with 360 2008 releases. But if Gears 2 comes out I'm sure that'll be kick-ass, just like the original.

And I think I just mentioned the tip of the iceberg for all four systems (including the PC).

MK_Red6715d ago

I've got to disagree with you on Brawl. While it will be a really fun game, I don't think the best Wii game title will remain in hands of Mario's Galaxy advanture.
Agreed on everything else, from Fallout 3 / SC2 on PC making it one of the best years to PS3's Killzone 2, LBP and FFXIIIs.
On 360 front, don't forget Ninja Gaiden 2 and Alan Wake as well as other possible games like Killer Instinct 3, Banjoo and such :)

Plus, we will also be getting GTA4, RE5, Burnout Paradise, GT5, Spore, Fable 2 and many more. A truly great year for all PC, PS3, 360 and Wii users.

kewlkat0076715d ago (Edited 6715d ago )

but I couldn't have agreed more. So when you getting a console bro?

I'm still playing Mario Galaxy, Final Fantasy 8/12/folklore, and Eternal Sonata on the 360. I'm really dragging on FFXII. All console have have good games in 2008.
I'm actually selling Folklore, do we have a buy/sell section?

Fallout 3 and Starcraft will keep PC gaming alive , as well as plenty other games.

And for Killzone 2 being a beast, I think GT4 will sell a lot more, if not MGS4 because not everyone is into shooter, and I'll say it again, not everyone is into shooters but MGS4 appeal to all regions [EU, States, Asia].

Would be nice if they had New Vegas ready as well, especially because of the show.

Hopefully this doesn't have the same performance issues as Oblivion Remastered.

cloganart133d ago

I haven't seen anything on these performance issues? What's been going on?

walken7133d ago

Probably the Unreal Engine issues, I skipped it for that reason.

Snookies12134d ago (Edited 134d ago )

Throw in all the DLC as well, like Oblivion and I'll definitely bite. I recall having one trophy left to unlock on the PS3 version with 100+ hours in my save. When my save file got corrupted, lol. Very sad day.

To be fair though, Bethesda was trash at Playstation ports anyway.

Michiel1989133d ago

all devs sucked at porting to ps3 for the first like 3 years because no one had experience with the cell architecture. Even 1st party took a long while to get proficient with it, the difference between uncharted 1 and 3 is massive for example.

Extermin8or3_133d ago

Oh oh oh I can do this too. GTA 7 will be made at some point in the future. Fallout 5 will enter development in the future too

jznrpg133d ago

Everyone there should know most gamers want New Vegas and Morrowind more than anything.

Christopher133d ago

Which is why we won't get them. Gotta keep floating "support this one and it might happen".

BlaqMagiq1133d ago

Can't wait. Won't have to go back to my PS3 to play this when it comes out.

Fallout 3 remastered on the Nintendo Switch 2 is what we deserve, not the worst Fallout game

Fallout Day's disappointing news that Fallout 4 is coming to Switch 2 is a shame, as this 17-year-old entry is more deserving of a new port.

Why exactly do you think you deserve it??

Phoenix76205d ago

Fallout 4 isn't the worst game in the franchise. It's either Fallout 76 or Fallout BOS that's the worst.

gigoran8205d ago

PC and all other modern consoles never got a remaster of 3, but obviously the switch 2 was the tipping point to make it a reality... ahuh

1nsomniac205d ago

Meh, I thought 3 was garbage. I'm not a great fan of the franchise to be fair. They're like B-Movie films, really shallow and janky. 4 was definitely one of the better ones though.

UltimateOwnage205d ago

So the article makes a snippy entitled statement and acts like that is going to encourage a publisher to give them what they want. Okay.

OG Left 4 Dead Creator Announces He's Working On A New Multiplayer Shooter

Following Left 4 Dead's undying legacy, the developer of the game shares that a new likewise project is in the works.

ZycoFox265d ago

L4D had potential to be so much more. The issue was that the release of the second game just one year after the first added a decent amount of content which was much needed, then there was nothing except for a few small content updates spread far between.

This is one of the only games I can think of that benefits from a yearly release, or at least a yearly DLC so it doesn't split the player base.

The games just got too samey and lack content.. it's a shame they didn't keep up the pace, I know you can download new maps but it doesn't change the overall game or add new enemies etc.

-Foxtrot264d ago

Regardless of what Valve officially said they didn’t need to do a sequel that fast, things could have easily been added to the original overtime and the sad thing is the characters and atmosphere of the original was better than the sequel. I mean we went from the dark, grim city streets to the sunny south where we are hitting massive menacing tanks with frying pans.

I honestly believe Valve killed it because it was a Turtle Rock game at its core and Valve wanted it to be known as an Valve only IP moving forward

They even brought back the original survivors just to kill one of them off (even though in the original they were heading North to Canada)

JEECE264d ago

Lol L4D2 came out in 2009, and you are saying it should have been a 2020s type live service game. It's just a great game, it doesn't need battle passes and skins.

This attitude is why devs are afraid to make any multiplayer game that isn't a live service.

Jingsing264d ago (Edited 264d ago )

Also in these current economic times live services is just a no go when people are being more frugal with their purchasing power. I don't do any subscription services anymore which means I can't do multiplayer on a console even if I wanted too. Something the console manufacturers should think about if they want to get players to even try their online stuff.
