Mass Effect 3 Writer Allegedly Slams Controversial Ending

A very critical post about Mass Effect 3's ending has been attributed to BioWare writer Patrick Weekes, though the text's origin has since been called into question.

Seems questionable about the circumstances, but what the poster said makes a lot of sense.

s/He'll be losing his/her job :(
If this is true ofc

"This was entirely the work of our lead and Casey himself, sitting in a room and going through draft after draft...Casey and our lead deciding that they didn't need to be peer-reviewed"

teething5049d ago (Edited 5049d ago )

If that is the writer (or not), I pretty much agree with everything he said. The ending was not so bad (I like the intellectual ending), but instead the lack of personalization to your actual choices made it lack.

da_2pacalypse5049d ago

I didn't need to read this to realize that the ending was not made by the same people who were responsible for the side missions. The side missions were fantastic, the main missions were nothing special (the ending especially)

Christopher5048d ago

Pretty much what da_2pacalypse said. You can't compare the ending to the ending on Tuchanka, the result of saving the council (again), and that moment when you finally make a difference in the war between the Quarians and the Geth.

Every death in this game, other than Shepards and the kid at the beginning, carried a lot of emotional weight for me. And while I hated not having a real choice in saving them, you can tell with the writing that they weren't doing it callously and without reason. It was a sign of the sacrifices being made to right the past and unite for a brighter future.

I still stand by my belief that the ending, while some may see it as 'intellectual', was done based on a business decision. One with the purpose of ensuring that future Mass Effect games, all of which are noted to happen before the ending of Mass Effect 3, and similar media will not conflict with the ending we experienced. By removing the answers we desire, they can continue to develop storylines that won't conflict if certain people didn't make it or based on the result of your choices. In the end, all choices lead to pretty much the same result.

@cgoodno

Damn those mod bubbles look good, but seriously that is the most intelligent theory I have heard so far. A lot of people seem to be taking to the idea of it being done to sell us extra endings. But yours actually makes much more sense.

I remember not long ago, Bioware put a message out telling people to keep a hold of their game saves for ME3 hinting there would be more, Now if we could swing the world in massively different directions due to our choices it makes it really hard to make ME4. It would literally have to have two or more completely different universes on the disc which would more or less mean building at least 2 completely different games that average out at the usual length of an ME game.

The only bit I dislike about this is that they must have known that for a while, and they deluded gamers by telling us that our choices would have a lot more impact

"This was entirely the work of our lead and Casey himself, sitting in a room and going through draft after draft...Casey and our lead deciding that they didn't need to be peer-reviewed"

This is what irks me and makes me feel like this may not be valid. If you are passionate about these games, you should have walked up to Casey and said NO! THIS SHOULD NOT BE THE ENDING, and explain and try to reason why the current ending would not fit.

Sure this guy gives a great ending that I would have liked. But, why not push as hard as possible. Im sure that his ideas would have been respected.

Truth is Im not in the I HATE nor I LOVE categories of the ending.

Im more curious as to why Bioware made the ending they did, and what their rational was behind it. I even got that Final Hours of Me3 app and watched all the interviews and the design process behind ME3.

Im waiting for Casey Hudson to explain "his" ending, and why they chose to make something in this sense.

Personally I am hoping for the indoctrination theory buzzing around, but Im not in one set camp.

Sure I probably would have hated the ending when I finished it, but people were complaining so much before I finished the game, that I had reduced my standards for the ending, and actually was very intrigued as I definitley noticed these plot holes, and noticed some of those indoctrination ideas during the ending and my current insanity playthrough.

Today BW made a statement, asking for constructive critisism and asking aside from the ending, was ,ME3 the best Bioware game they delivered.

Since I only played 3 Bioware games, yes, yes it is the best game I think they crafted minus the ending because it was so ambiguous.

I think people need to stop raging, regardless of how disappointed we are. We need to show Bioware in a respectable manner that yes, we are disappointed in the ending, but give critisim on the game as a whole, rather than one part.

Overall the story telling in ME3 is excellent, and people need to talk about ME3 as a whole rather than insatantly complain about the ending, no matter how pissed of it makes you.

I say, lets be patient, game came out 2 weeks ago. Let Bioware explain this ending to us, and then we decide if their vision is acceptable to the characters, story and lore, or not.

Thats all

joab7775049d ago

U know what's funny, ken levine doesn't even let anyway read the story or know what's going to happen in bioshock so that they can get a good perspective. I imagine that he will listen to input, but some people love their project so much and are so sure of their abilities that they are ultimately going to do what they want.

What saddens me the most is that if this forces bioware to change the ending and give it out for free, EA is gonna be pissed. And we can say goodbye to studios having freedom over content. I'd rather live with the ending than give justification for corporate to make content or artistic decisions.

rdgneoz35049d ago

"I'd rather live with the ending than give justification for corporate to make content or artistic decisions."

If the quote from the writer is true, then the ME3 writers had their artistic freedom restricted. The way the writing was set up was to have group input, but with the ending, only Casey and the lead (Walters) had any say in what happened.

That's a bit different from one guy deciding from the start about what was gonna happen throughout the whole story.

Canvas Of Flesh5049d ago

I don't really care if the poster is really a Bioware employee or not, what he posted would have been a great ending.

VanguardOfCalamity5049d ago

Interesting post... I like to see something like this also :)

"I wanted to see banshees attacking you, and then have asari gunships zoom in and blow them away. I wanted to see a wave of rachni ravagers come around a corner only to be met by a wall of krogan roaring a battle cry. Here's the horror the Reapers inflicted upon each race, and here's the army that you, Commander Shepard, made out of every race in the galaxy to fight them. "

BI0RAPTOR5049d ago (Edited 5049d ago )

The statement you copied and paste also caught my eye to the point I did the same.
Although your input says what I was thinking to do.
This would have been great to see something in the lines of this ending

As to the article a lot of the read makes senses.

Tuxedo_Mask5048d ago

That sounds like the ending to Dragon Age: Origins.

EditorAtGNG5049d ago

Seems to me (if this is indeed legit) that they cut all those things with a purpose... DLC. Hudson can go f-himself for thinking he can get away with this. Not only did they lie (twice) about the DLC but now this...

VanillaBear5049d ago (Edited 5049d ago )

I don't know who to believe, apparently Chris has said it's fake but people on the forums are bringing up to stuff to make me think that part of it could be true

Although with whats gone on since ME3, I don't know if Bioware can be trusted so it makes me think this could be true. It's easy for Bioware to come out and say "It's fake" isn't it...

SageHonor5049d ago (Edited 5049d ago )

Priestly could be attempting damage control. He's ... " contradicted" himself multiple times in the past so yep

EDIT: I still think its fake though.

Saudi Arabia Will Own 93 Percent Of Battlefield 6 Publisher EA

When the dust settles on the $55 billion leveraged buyout of Electronic Arts, Saudi Arabia will be its only true owner, despite a “consortium” of investors being involved in the deal. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund will control 93 percent of the company, according to filings with Brazil’s antitrust regulator.

blacktiger44d ago

Technically speaking, Saudi Arabia and TENCENT can buy the entire USA. ANf Democrat and Republican will not do crap!

Inverno44d ago

Letting foreign entities own half of American businesses is liberal and very progressive. So is bringing in all that talent from outside the States to replace the talentless and lazy American workers. And here I thought the Trump administration wanted to border is up but nope. We're supposed to worry bout them "radical Muslims" minding their own here and ignore China/Saudi/Israel taking over.

blacktiger44d ago

Another thing I hate hearing is "liberal and very progressive"
It's 2025 and that stuff is outdated. Everything and everyway is literally the same thing wheter it's progressive, conservativ. Because they all wants the same thing have, king unlimited oney buy everything including your house.

Now they making mainstream media news that it's AI Bubble justify to highjack the price of RAM.
Another excuse for inflation!

Tacoboto44d ago

"here I thought the Trump administration wanted to border is up but nope"

Lol, you actually bought what he was selling? Let's see this week alone...

Yesterday he pardoned an international drug lord, while allowing the murder of random fishermen on boats. Remember drain the swamp? He pardoned a Democratic Congressman jailed for bribery just today, nevermind that fraudulent drag queen republican that was kicked out of Congress and imprisoned for their fraud. It's so petty they're picking fights on social media with pop stars while using their music, and even using Franklin the damn Turtle to cartoonify their murders.

thorstein44d ago

You believed him!?!!

I've got some Trump $5000 bills for you, only half off.

Inverno42d ago

People I do not use /s to point out my sarcasm. Should be obvious I don't believe anything coming out of Trump's mouth or any politicians mouth.

but saudis even have their grabby hands in nintendo stocks.

Looking on the bright side, the games may be patched to remove any ideologies that are incompatible for the majority of the world.

What do you mean? You want censorship in games?

Mass Effect - N7 DAY 2025

Bioware writes: "Like you, we’ve heard the rumors lately. You’ve made it clear you care deeply about what’s next. So let’s start by setting the record straight: the next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe."

I expected nothing and I'm still disappointed

Like with Fallout, it's starting to feel studios are using TV / Film adaptations when they have no game info to talk about.

toxic-inferno70d ago

I feel the same way.

I mean, how difficult would it be for them to release SOMETHING of substance? Another short trailer? A couple of proper hints? A short story set during the original trilogy, but focused on fringe characters?

Hopefully they're working so hard on the game that they don't have time. But still, with every passing year and so little to show, the franchise will be slipping further and further from people's minds.

Profchaos70d ago

Yeah agree it's almost a cop out since Dev times are 5 to 10 years just throw out a few seasons instead you get them done in a year

jznrpg70d ago

I still haven’t beat Andromeda. I am waiting for a lull of good games in my backlog

P_Bomb70d ago

So the TV show will take place after the OG trilogy. I wonder which ending they’ll use?

Rebel_Scum70d ago

Should’ve just posted a picture of an Elcor saying “regretfully, we have nothing to share.”

BioWare needs to follow Larian’s lead and just “embrace people’s cool choices”, veteran EA developer

Speaking on a recent episode of the FRVR Podcast, veteran EA developer Alex Hutchinson—who worked on The Sims 2, Spore and Army of Two: The 40th Day—explained that the studio is already no longer the studio fans fell in love with, but it should be safe from censorship of its games’ political beliefs.

contra15770d ago

Who didn’t see this coming lol

Armaggedon69d ago

BioWare should find the center and focus. Chasing someone else’s shadow will likely lead to failure.
