Weekend Rant: Let’s give Phil Fish a break

"Phil Fish began Fez years ago and went through countless cycles of development. Some of this was documented in Indie Game: The Movie and after a showing at GDC, a Japanese developer asked his opinion on Japanese games which he replied “your games suck”. Since then, the whirlwind of hate he’s receiving is pretty crazy, people saying he has zero games out and doesn’t deserve to say things like that. Others even saying he doesn’t deserve the grand prize at the IGF awards, purely for either winning one already or for his comments. I offer one request about all of this hub-bub though.

Can’t we just give him a break?"

The setting was inappropriate for the comment, but I can respect a guys opinion.

I'm still looking forward to Fez.

he deserves every nasty thing said to him as does this article writer who is obviously the same kind of generalizing half truth troll

"He was talking about modern Japanese games which they’re few and far
between now."

false lie

"Other than Suda 51, Nintendo and other companies, we live
in a world where Western development is more prevalent. We care more
about our Mass Effect‘s than our Final Fantasy’s nowadays."

is that why final fantasy sells more worldwide? ignore this article

everyone brings up when inafune says bad stuff about japan but nobody brings up the fact that EVERY OTHER DEV in japan says good things.......

not to mention the countless number of people and devs wo say bad things about western gaming

wordupagain5173d ago

He was talking about modern games if you follow his Twitter which he clarified his statements so that's not wrong.

And Hideo Kojima and Shinji Mikami have both said negative things about Japanese gaming as well? They're not afraid to admit it and also be scared about it.

Also, most gamers don't care nowadays about Japanese games. Go up to any gamer on the street and they're more excited for 80% of western games then Japanese. I'm still excited for Xenoblade and Last Story but I probably couldn't find 1-5 people who want it as well.

Kramerica135172d ago

Xenoblade Chronicles and Last Story look great. Aside from Nintendo games, there really isn't much else coming out of Japan that I care too much about, though. I'm sure I'm missing something, but I can't think off the top of my head of a single other Japanese game coming out this year that I care about.

It's kind of sad because most of the best games used to come out of Japan and the West only had a few key hits. Now it is the complete opposite. Of course, not everyone will agree with that, which is fine.

In any case, Fez looks awesome.

Pokemon_Master5172d ago (Edited 5172d ago )

Yes he was falsely talking about Japanese modern games.
Also both devs you mentioned in there most recent statements are pro japan and actually insult the west for liking nothing but generic gun games which are things western devs have been saying

Peter M=west has issues
Bioware= west has issues
Thq = west has issues

See a pattern?
“Also, most gamers don't care nowadays about Japanese games. “
I can lie and generalize too, it isn’t hard. Considering it is Japanese games that are the top selling of this gen and Japanese companies are grossing the most revenue
“Go up to any gamer on the street and they're more excited for 80% of western games then Japanese. “
No facts, its pathetic.
“I'm still excited for Xenoblade and Last Story but I probably couldn't find 1-5 people who want it as well.”

@Kramerica13

and there isnt anything in the west I want. Nothing but generic realism middleware drivel. Its why the japanese game scene is healthy with new devs sprouting up and the western industry is dying with layoffs bankrupcies, and spending on US games down.

"It's kind of sad because most of the best games used to come out of Japan and the West only had a few key hits. Now it is the complete opposite."

Actually its still the same. Look at this year. Nothing the west has come up with is as good as RE revelations, suikoden psp, devil survivor 2, tales of graces, shining blade and other unique titles...

A lot of hot air, zero substance. For all that wheel spinning you've done, you've done very little to prove your theory that:

A) Japanese Developers are Happy and Growing.

B) They are releasing unique and different games from their Western counter parts. Or at least not wallowing in genre's that they've murdered worse then " Generic Gun games"

C) With the exception of Nintendo and Sony as a publisher have ANY influence or clout when it comes to the direction of games as a whole.

Japan DRAGGED its feet out of the last generation of consoles and 6-7 years into this cycle they are still doing it. I also feel like you should probably look at these Japanese companies that are doing well and look at where this "Revenue" is being generated. Big hint, it's not Japanese developed games.

But I've listed something that hinges on doing research...fat chance of someone doing some research before spouting their drivel.

Pokemon_Master5172d ago

The only hot air I see is coming out of you.

Square has hit profit records on the back of its japanese titles. When its western ones hit, they hit profit lows........thats what I see

And I am happy japan dragged its feat. We got awesome titles like persona 4 and FF 12 and wild arms 5.

Nintendo is the highest generating revenue company in gaming. And its all on the back of there japanese dev as well.

Same with capcom and resident evil, sf, monster hunter and more

Not sure what your getting at

And I dont have to prove A and B its fact

Ravenor5172d ago

So 3 RPGS, RE5, Street Fighter and Monster hunter are your great bastions of profitability? Of Critical and Commercial success? What's so great about RE5 that's miles better then RE4? Oh right, Sheva and grass skirts.

Again, you've posted another comment that has absolutely zero to support your claims. When I say dragged feet I meant in the sense that the games they released on the platforms could be packaged in a Xbox or PS2 case and you would barely know the difference beyond the visuals.

5-6 series of games does not make for a thriving market, 5-6 series of games that haven't really changed much over the years. Yep, creative ole Japan.

Nintendo generates the kind of revenue it does through its heritage and characters. When my mother bought a Wii she purchased Galaxy simply because Mario was on the box. You've deluded yourself into believing a lot of things and it's kinda sad to watch.

Your opinion does not outweigh others, and games from Japan largely are not great. But hey Black & White 2, I'm excited to catch pokemon....again too. Originality, yeah yeah.

smmelton5172d ago

I'll give the guy a break, but come on. The reality is that you know you're in the public eye. You just have to watch what you say.

Review - Fez (Switch) | WayTooManyGames

WTMG's Leo Faria: "In short, Fez is as good now as it has always been. The reason I call this version the best way to experience this indie game is mostly due to the perfect combination of the Switch’s portability and its screen being much larger than the Vita’s. This is easily one of the best indies ever made, and one of the most important games of the past decade. Even though a lot of younger players only know it due to its troubled development cycle and some post-launch controversies, Switch owners should definitely pick this game up. This gem took an eternity to arrive on the system, but it feels right at home on it."
