[Generation Eight] Recently the world has been set ablaze by rumors that Valve is preparing Steam-based gaming hardware to bring PC gaming to a larger demographic. There have been many different opinions about what this project will look like, if and how it could compete against consoles, and whether or not it should even be called a game console at all.
In a recent opinion piece, I shared my personal belief that this shouldn’t be treated as a ‘game console’, because it really isn’t. On the risk of sounding like a flake and/or hypocrite, I must say I am only partly right in not calling it a game console. The reason I went down this route when writing the article was to distinguish the big difference between what a Steam system might look like compared to a traditional console. So what is the key difference, at least from my point of view?

It's a step forward for Stop Killing Games.
buttons.
Something that was built dedicated for games, and sits in my living room. Hooked into a nice flatscreen, controller is the dedicated method to play not mouse and keyboard. Pretty simple stuff.
The difference between steam and consoles is consoles are proprietary. I own games on steam that my pc can't even play. My old pc broke down and now im on a crappy laptop. But, Valve is a weird case scenario. Generally speaking, most consoles have exclusives. And almost everything on steam is third party, so Microsoft would beable to 1up Steam with their unlimited bank account funds and marketing schemes. Once Microsoft, Sony, or even Nintendo stake their claims in that market space, say bye bye to Steam. Even EA won't beable to do anything but cave in. Say bye bye to Origin too.
Its a closed system , plug and play, every new game that comes out work, standardized specs.
A pc is an open system, has much much more graphical and gameplay capabilities, more functional, customizable.
The steam box = valve's alienware
Length of life, no modifications to performance, and exclusive games. Saying the valve box can be modified or that it will be revamped every 3 years means its just another PC in my eyes.
